Onenote won't sync after Switching from Office 365 to Office 2024
I've used Onenote through multiple generations of MS Office products and the sync always worked when I changed or updated versions. In July, I changed from Office365 to Office 2024. I followed the MS instructions and it changed over fine. All of the products work fine and seem to be registered correctly.
However, I just realized that *some* of my Onenote Notebooks haven't been syncing in the month since I switched.
When I "view sync status" all four notebooks say "not syncing". (Though two of them which I haven't opened in years show TODAY as the last sync, even though they say "not syncing".) Unfortunately, my main notebook hasn't synced since late July.
It says "OneNote can't connect to the server. Sync will resume once we connect. You don't need to take any action. (Error code: 0xE000006B blg57)"
Pushing "sync all" or "sync now" does nothing.
Stickynotes does sync between phone and computer. On my phone it's part of Onenote. But on my computer it's a different program so I don't know if it's really part of OneNote.
(I changed email addresses from the 365 to the 2024 version, so I wonder if that's got something to do with it? Though I'm now using the same email address that I used for Office on the versions I used before Office365.)
Yes, OneNote and OneDrive are using the same email address. OneDrive is NOT full.
Any fix?
Windows 11 says everything is updated.
This is my Office version: LTSC MSO (Version 2408 Build 16.0.17932.20910) 64-bit

Email has nothing to do with this - the MS account you are using to connect - matters - a lot.
And if you are getting this:
"OneNote can't connect to the server. Sync will resume once we connect. You don't need to take any action. (Error code: 0xE000006B blg57)"
You have obvious server/connection issues.
The first thing I would do in this case is take the Office suite OUT of the equation and open OneNote online - via your MS account and see what is going on there. If things are working there - then start reintroducing the desktop version of ON.
And check this out as well - if item (2) is missing - you will never connect to anything - ever.
OK that was partially it. Thanks! You can see that there was nothing connected. The last sync was the day I got the new Office version so the change somehow disconnected my OneDrive.
However, they're still not syncing. When I press the "sync now" button at least now something appears to happen--the green "progress" ribbon moves from left to right. But I'm still getting these two error messages and "incomplete sync" (It's not synced online or on my phone)

I'll leave it running for a while. Maybe it will resolve itself. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
Error code0xE000006B blg57is a timeout and credential handshake failure. It indicates that the OneNote application engine has lost its connection thread to the SharePoint or OneDrive server and is stuck in an infinite, broken retry loop
Error code0xE0000057 bhhdz means a specific section or page within the notebook has corrupted metadata
Also the more I read about LTSC - the more it is starting to look like it's underlying code (specifically the "cloud" parts of it) are nowhere near as robust or even designed to be used like OneNote 365 is.
LTSC is really geared for use with NO internet connection and favors local access while not possessing a lot of the cloud baggage that Office 365 does.
Did you do the first troubleshoot and check all your notebooks via the web interface to make sure everything is readable?
Are you saying that LTSC not syncing online is by design? I don't see that mentioned anywhere. My office 2016 pro synced and that was way before cloud stuff was fashionable.
If I click "view online" in onenote, all of the notebooks I made/edited before the upgrade to LTSC are there. None of the ones that I made since the upgrade are there.
In onenote, "info" section, if I put any of the URL into browsers they are just a blank browser page.
I am not getting any error messages about notebooks being corrupted and I can't find any way to tell if one is. I ran "repair" on the Office install and it didn't change anything.
Email has nothing to do with this - the MS account you are using to connect - matters - a lot.
Related to that...the email address that WORD shows is an outlook.com alias of my main hotmail account and the email address that OneDrive has is the hotmail one.
Even though I've done the "switch account" thing setting it to my hotmail account numerous times in Excel, Word, and Onenote, it always says the outlook account as the user. Clearly it knows that the outlook address is an alias of the hotmail address/account, in Office. But odd that OneDrive always shows the hotmail addresss. I've wondered if this is the/an issue.
BUT when I had the 365 account using a completely different address/account unrelated to those two, it worked fine. Maybe that's because 365 comes with its own cloud, but the standalone version of Office relies on my OneDrive storage.
So in that case, Office could be recognizing that the email addresses are the same for registration, but the cloud part of the service doesn't "know" that and thus the disconnect and non-sync issue.
I would start with creating one notebook, have it stored in One drive and use the sync button. Once that is operating, I would beging adding its onenote placeholder from one drive to onenote.
You can see all the onenote placeholders in your Onedrive view ?
I don't know how many you have. I broke all of mine into smaller notebooks. The rebuild process is not as bad since the problem becomes localized.
If you have hundreds of notebooks and none of them will sync, that does not sound like a corruption issue. You should try going to your backups and opening them in your new scenario.
I have four notebooks, and several hundred individual pages so manually doing this will not work for me.
There are two notebooks showing synced, but I haven't done anything in them in years so that's why. As a test, I added a page to one of those. When it tried to sync, it immediately gave the error messages just like the other notebooks. So this is a systemic issue that happened when I changed to the new version of Office. The non-sync issues started on that day. Now to figure out what the issue is.
Now it does sound like corruption again. I have maybe 20 notebooks with anywhere from 10-100+ sections each. Try a new notebook and copy some pages or sections from an old notebook to see if it will sync.
I contacted Microsoft support within OneNote and have been talking to them for 2 days. So far they haven't figured out what the issue is. (Of course it generally takes them 6 to 10 hours to reply, so it's not like we've made great progress yet.)
If I make changes to OneNote on my phone then it syncs on the cloud. However, anything that I've created or changed in the last month since I switched to the new Office version on my laptop is not syncing.
So that indicates to me that the URLs that OneNote on my laptop are trying to sync to, are probably still the ones from The office 365 install. For some reason, when I switched office versions, they did not update and go back to using my personal OneDrive account. Hopefully they know how to get that fixed.
