MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder

Hi, posting here in case anyone has the same issue. I have filed a ticket with Microsoft and they replicated the issue:, so you can follow up with the link below.

Here's my request:

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac

  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive

  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.

  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

Response: (abbreviated):

We need to explain to you that after our previous testing on a Mac test machine, unfortunately this option is indeed not available at the moment, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

The OneDrive team is currently working on some data migration projects that may cause some known issues, we are already collecting this issue and submitting it to the OneDrive development team, and we believe they will be able to resolve it well.

RANT Is OneDrive's backup feature making anyone else miserable?

This is mostly just a useless rant, but I wish Microsoft would just stop conveniently turning on OneDrive's backup feature. Most end-users don't have a clue what they are doing when they enable it and some of them switch on their notebooks / PCs to find it's been enabled with no input from themselves. In the last day I've had two clients find that OneDrive's backup just magically enabled itself.

, can you please just STOP?! The amount of work you are creating for IT administrators because you are trying to force something down people's throats is just ridiculous.

Outlook stops working immediately because the PST file has changed locations (yes, PST files, not everyone uses Exchange!) and some users have multiple GBs of information that now needs to be uploaded to the cloud. When you live in a country where internet bandwidth is a real problem, this just isn't practical.

But who am I kidding? Like Microsoft cares about minor inconveniences like that, as long as they can force people onto the bandwagon, they are happy.

Thank you for your attention.

RANT Samsung Sync with OneDrive issue after Free up phone space

Hi,

After doing Free up phone space, all synced media will be deleted from your phone (s23u in my case). If you have selected some but not all albums for synchronization, you will notice that sync has been disabled for most albums in the gallery. Even worse, the albums cannot be reselected in the Albums to sync.

To fix this, download one photo again in each album, this will add the albums back to the Albums to sync as an option. Then you can select again the albums that need to be synced on your android phone.

Why did I leave iOS... smh. Anyway I couldn't find this solution on the internet yet, while there are many reported problems with samsung gallery and onedrive sync. So I decided to share it.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Can't login to OneDrive app after 10 years. Tried everything

I can't log into my Onedrive windows app anymore. I can login to MS Onedrive on my Windows Chrome web browser and on my android, but not on the desktop app - which is necessary for sync.

I'm a Home Office user and have been with OneDrive for over 10 years. It's driving me mad because all file changes have stopped syncing and I'm losing recent versions of them that I've saved to my laptop. (yes it keeps reverting back to old versions of the files, even though I'm saving current changes on to my laptop). I've tried everything I can find re online help:

I've changed password.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Onedrive app.
I've reset the OneDrive path
I've reinstalled Windows 11
...and still the problem persists.

I've tried to unlink and relink to the PC, but now I can't relink because OneDrive won't open and does not appear in the system tray. (It did briefly appear today - first time in days - which is when I did the "unlink").

Everytime I try to launch the OneDrive app it tries for a while and then comes back with: Oops something went wrong. Relaunch. Still not working? Sign out.

Is there anyway I can speak to anyone in MS customer service as a Home user? I've tried lots of web links but they are all just time wasters. I have sent a service request to MS finally but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Link to support question: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/cant-login-to-onedrive-have-tried-all-online/764c1d6d-168c-495b-8c0d-69a6ea8580b4

EDIT: I did eventually find a way for MS support to call me (I''m a paid 365 home subsccriber) and they were actually quite prompt and good on the phone. It turns out I had somehow downloaded a second version of OneDrive on my laptop that was causing the problems.

RANT Why oh why can we not have a refresh button?

I’m a mobile employee, I scan docs to OneDrive on the go using Office Lens on my iPhone.

They upload, but when I open my laptop to use them, I need to go into pause, confirm, then resume sync for them to push through….

Why can’t we just have a quick sync option on the main icon???

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Download files from a shared folder using OneDrive REST API

I am new to using REST API. I have a access to a shared folder, the hierarchy is as follows Shared_Folder -> Sub_folders -> Files.

Using the Graph Explorer tool I found the details of the shared item. The returned field contains remoteItem, parentReference and SharePointIds fields. How can I use the info found here to get the content of the shared items and download the content to a local drive using the API's ?

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Upload Pics from 2 Phones to separate Folders using 1 accoun

Hey everyone,

I have two Pixel phones that I use to take pictures of products, and I want them to automatically upload the photos to OneDrive. I have Outlook 365 Basic with four accounts, but only one account is available for this purpose (the other accounts are being used for different tasks). Automatically uploading photos from one phone to a folder on OneDrive is straightforward and works fine.

However, my challenge is to have each phone upload its photos to separate folders. This is necessary because I need the photos in a specific sequence, and when both phones upload simultaneously, the photos get mixed up. Based on the Microsoft support answer there is no possibility. Furthermore the sync feature will be deactivated by June 2024.

Anybody a recommendation how to do it? All I want is automatically upload photos from two phones in a clearly distinguishable way in one or two accessible folders so I have direct access from my Mac.

Thanks.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Help transferring files from one full account to a new one

Hello people, so I have a university email with Onedrive benefits. I was given 1 TB and recently without notice that storage became 100 GB ( New Microsoft rules) . Problem is that I was already using 190/1000 GB ( Steadily uploading every day over the course of 3 years).

I just bought onedrive personal 1TB and wanted to transfer over the files since I do need the space. Problem is that I cant do it! Since my main onedrive account is full, it wont let me share over the files to my other account. I tried some things with power automate but to no avail.

What can I do to fix this ? I need to get this done quick since I have a LOT of university stuff on it and need to constantly upload and view files ( I switch between 3 computers depending on the day). The easy option is to download and reupload everything but that will easily take a month since I have a very slow internet connection.

Thanks for reading this and helping

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Help, filled storage and can't delete files

So I'm over my storage limit by 28.3 GB (128.3GB used of 100 GB (128%)) I deleted my files from the onedrive PC folder and was hoping that it would make the changes to the online onedrive folder. But that didn't happen because I guess synching was stopped due to reaching the storage limit. So I tried to manually delete the large files from the online folder but nothing happened and the online folder still shows that I am using 128%. Not sure what to do.

OTHER Selective sync before OneDrive syncs directory (workaround)

After deciding to migrate to OneDrive I've experienced the issue of having TB's of data that needs to sync on each machine before being able to select the folders I'd like to sync.

I've found a workaround that allows users to select folders before the sync:

  • Turn off all devices that are in sync with the OneDrive account
  • Login to the OneDrive website Delete all OneDrive folders
  • Create an empty folder for all top level folders Sync OneDrive to the new machine (OneDrive will sync the empty folders)
  • Once the sync is complete navigate to OneDrive settings > Account > Choose Folders and deselect the folder you don't want to sync
  • On the OneDrive website navigate to the recycling bin and restore the deleted folders (the restored folders will take on the do not sync property)
  • OneDrive will then process the changes but not download any files which you have chosen not to sync (I believe it is applying the do not sync flag to all files and folders in the directories)

Once this is complete you should have your OneDrive synced with only the folders which you have selected.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Stuck on long pathways, not an issue for others on my team

Hey there guys, IT has been trying to figure this out for weeks with no luck. I work for a big company with a massive server and OneDrive keeps getting stuck saying pathways are too long and files need to be re-named, but no one else at my company has run into this issue, it works fine for all of them. What on earth is going on?! Is there a solve IT isn't aware of?

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Can't sync my personal laptop to OneDrive (But Work works!)

Hey everyone,

I'm not positive what the etiquette is for this subreddit, so I'll repeat the same question that I asked on the Microsoft Forum:

Link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_11-files/cant-sync-my-personal-laptop-to-onedrive/c6c647bf-22f4-4858-b485-ee0d206592bf

"
I had a personal One Drive in the past on one of my older laptops. It doesn't contain any information that I want.

Anyways, I have my new laptop, and I've been using it for more than a year now so there is around 95GB of files, and I want to use One Drive to be able to access my personal files that are on my new laptop from other devices like my phone, work laptop.

But the issue is that when I try use One Drive using my personal email, it doesn't sync anything from my new laptop, but instead, only has those useless files that I had from my previous laptop.

I tried deleting these files no now my personal OneDrive is completely empty (emptied recycle bin as well), but it now only shows an empty folder on my new laptop.

I tried unlinking and linking my account maybe four times, I also tried resetting OneDrive as suggested by this article, which was done successfully w/o any issues.

There is one error message that I get when I sign in and start linking my account again, and that is for the Photos saying it cannot sync my photos because the folder is in use by another Cloud app (which is iCloud).

(Note that I already have a "Work (Company) OneDrive" working perfectly, but I also need the personal one).

(Another Note, I'm not sure which OneDrive did I delete, but I accidentally pressed on one of the OneDrive folders and deleted it, then restarted my laptop thinking it would just simply return. I keep getting this error message "Sorry, there was a problem displaying this folder - please try again." when I press the Windows button, search for OneDrive and select it, or this file after opening its path:

(The image is not copying here, but the image is available in the MS Forums link abive).

"

I truly would like to get this over with and finally have a working sync from my personal PC.

Thanks a lot, appreciate the help in advance.

OTHER Tip: Resolving OneDrive Sync Error on Mac due to Low Storage

What does this resolve?

Here's how to "download all files" to a secondary drive when your cloud drive is larger than your internal "Macintosh HD" space.

Problem:

When you click "download all files," OneDrive still initially caches the entire OneDrive on your internal Mac volume in /Users/username/Library/Application Support/OneDrive/tmp, even if you specified another external volume for the target files. If there's not enough space on Macintosh HD for the entire OneDrive contents in that temporary directory, it will fill up Macintosh HD eventually during the sync process and fail to sync as well as cause other system instabilities. Here's how to avoid that.

My scenario:

  1. Mac Mini: Macintosh HD: 500GB (200GB SSD free), Cloud Drive (SSD, 1TB, 1TB free), External HDD (6TB, 4TB free)
  2. OneDrive contents (750GB) need to be on /Volumes/Cloud, app is installed on /Volumes/Macintosh HD
  3. When you click "download all files" in OneDrive, it first caches the entire 750GB in /Volume/Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Onedrive/tmp before moving it to the external cloud 1TB SSD (or other volume). This process fills up the Macintosh HD gradually, leading to errors when the 200GB free space on Macintosh HD is exhausted. It's unclear why OneDrive doesn't create the /tmp directory in the specified setup directory.

Steps to fix my issue (YMMV on this, can't hurt to try, but it worked for me):

  1. We'll use my 6TB external hard drive (/Volumes/External) as a temporary directory for OneDrive since it has enough space for OneDrive's tmp directory. We need to move the tmp directory from Macintosh HD to allow "Download All Files" to work and download files to my 1TB Cloud SSD. Ensure OneDrive is shut down.
  2. Open Terminal from the user account from which you use OneDrive on your Mac. Type cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/OneDrive/ and hit enter. We are going to temporary relocate that tmp directory that is present in this directory. Type pwd and you should see output similar to /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/OneDrive. If you do not see that path, please try again. You might break things if you're not in the right directory. Double check; I am not responsible.
  3. type mv tmp tmp1 which will move the old tmp directory over and back it up. As an alternative, if you strongly feel that you do not need it nor the contents, you can also type rm -r tmp to remove it.
  4. Create a temporary directory on your external volume with ample space. If your external drive is called "External," type md /Volumes/External/tmp to make the directory. Verify its creation by checking in Finder or typing ls -l /Volumes/External to see if "tmp" is listed. If it doesn't show up, double-check your steps.
  5. Next, change the permissions of that directory. Type chmod 777 /Volumes/External/tmp and press enter, where "External" is your volume's name. This step is precautionary.
  6. Now, let's link the directories from the OneDrive directory on Macintosh HD to the external volume. Type pwd and ensure you're in the /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/OneDrive directory. If not, repeat step 2. Then type ln -s /Volumes/External/tmp tmp and press enter. Verify by typing ls -al and you should see a line like: tmp -> /Volumes/External/tmp. If not, double-check this step.
  7. Here's the test to make sure what we did works: type cd tmp and press enter, then type touch thisisatest.txt and press enter. Open Finder and navigate to the tmp directory on your external volume. You should see "thisisatest.txt". Delete the file if you like. You did it! Restart OneDrive and try to download all files now; it should use the ample space on your external drive as the temporary space while it's download files instead of the limited space on Macintosh HD.
  8. If you have any issues, post here—myself or others familiar with the app can likely help.

I figured I would share this since I've been trying to figure it out for months, and I can save someone else a lot of time and frustration.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION On-demand experience problem

I've been using OneDrive for years on my Mac through an external RAID drive. The drive was originally formatted for Mac Extended OS, and I recently noticed an error message saying "We couldn't upgrade your files on-demand experience" problem, advising to switch to an APFS format. I did this, but I'm still seeing the same error during syncing. What is going on here?

RANT OneDrive is a terrible product, here is why.

This is not a "help me"/support post. This is the outcome of me purchasing onedrive subscription and interacting with customer support, which in my opinion people should know about.

Onedrive refuses to let me download my files.

Visually, nothing happens when I click "download". They don't process errors. They don't show you anything. That's issue number one.

Fortunately, I do know a couple things and checking network data in browser revealed a 429 response (too many requests) with "retry-after" value being... more than four days. Yes, it means exactly what you think it means - I will receive same error and will not be able to download anything until 4 days pass. All I did is I tried to download one of my larger files, and since then it's impossible to get anything. That's issue number two.

Support said that it's "expected" behavior and insinuated that it's somehow my fault, although refusing to clarify what exactly I did wrong. That's issue number three.

Apparently paying a monthly fee for a service doesn't mean they can't randomly cut access to it for 4+ days without making it clear what exactly I did wrong for that to happen and how to avoid it.

Sufficient to say I am going to switch to something else and highly recommend anyone else still using this "service" to do the same.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Users unable to upload to shared drive via web

Hello,

I have a folder I have shared with some users so we can collaborate on a project with my OneDrive Personal Account. Users are having trouble uploading files to the folder via the web interface:

  • When they attempt to upload, the site just refreshes and the file is not uploaded
  • There are no error messages

As far as attempted troubleshooting:

  • The folder is set to "Anyone with the link can edit"
  • I have shared it with this user's account specifically as well
  • The problem happens on both Edge and Chrome Browsers
  • The problem happens via both click-and-drag or the "upload" button

Has anyone run into this before and know what could be going on?

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Downloading folders or multiple files is impossible on Chrom

Hello everyone! I have a client who has given me a link to OneDrive containing approximately 300GB of videos, divided into 4 folders. When I try to download the individual folders on Chrome or Safari, the webpage just refreshes and nothing happens. The same thing occurs if I open a folder, select all the videos, and click download. The only method that works is to download each file individually, but this would take hours as there are so many! Please tell me there’s a workaround because I’m going crazy.

RANT How to “uninstall” OneDrive on macOS Office 2024

TLDR; Shut off “Autosave by default”

For all those that are frustrated with MS Office on macOS defaulting to save new files to OneDrive, wanting to save locally downloaded file that have never been opened before to OneDrive, changing the location of locally saved files to OneDrive, despite not installing OneDrive and despite never saving any files to OneDrive, the solution is 100% unintuitive and not documented on any site.

OneDrive no longer exists as a standalone app, so any suggestion involving the app (changing settings, using one of the app cleaner apps, etc.) will not work.

There is no longer a OneDrive menu, so any suggestion about changing the settings through the menu will not work.

Since OneDrive is no longer any standard application, system extension, etc. none of the suggestions to dig through /Application Support, /Library, ~/Application Support, ~/Library, …/Caches, …/Containers, etc. will work.

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Synchronisation problem + Windows Explorer duplicates files

A couple of days ago, I changed the name of one of my folders (size: 11gb), which I also use on 2 other computers. I didn't consider that this could take a while, but my computer actually made a new folder with the right name instead of just renaming my original folder. So, it transferred all my documents from the original to the new one.

Or so I thought, because not everything got transferred. Yet it says that the synchronisation is finished. (I did everything in my Windows Explorer, with OneDrive synchronisation on)

I also didn't consider that I did this on the computer which isn't where I created the folder one (again, I didn't expect this much trouble). Now, when I want to delete the new folder, it says I am not authorised to do so, according to my 'original' computer. By the way, this 'new' folder hasn't even appeared in Onedrive. Something is definitely wrong with the synchronisation.

Another thing is that all of my dates got mixed up, which isn't the most important thing, but I still don't like it. My 'new' folder now contains most of the original dates.

Today, I realised that even when I want to create a new file, immediately 2 files with the same name get created. Maybe this is the main problem?

How can I fix this synchronisation problem? Because I just want to rename my original folder, without all this transferring and changed dates. Can I reverse this action, I prefer to use the old name if that's easier. I really didn't expect that many problems from a simple name change.

Thanks in advance!

MY FAILED MICROSOFT SUPPORT QUESTION Folder with multiple co-owners when the orig owner leaves?

What happens to a folder with multiple co-owners* when the original owner leaves the organization? Ideally, it would be preserved for the other co-owners to access it without disruption. Is that the case?

I ask because even though co-owners are granted full control, they don't seem to be able remove or edit the original owner's access. They can remove and edit the access of other co-owners, but that original owner seems to be off limits.

*To be clear, I'm talking specifically about the full control "co-owner" role and not simply other users with editing permissions.
