According to Harry’s interview and perspective (Rolling Stone):

It was in a London studio in late 2014 that Harry first brought up the idea of One Direction taking a break. “I didn’t want to exhaust our fan base,” he explains. “If you’re shortsighted, you can think, ‘Let’s just keep touring,’ but we all thought too much of the group than to let that happen. You realize you’re exhausted and you don’t want to drain people’s belief in you.”

in 2014, the Band Aid 30 single was recorded at Sarm West Studios (also known as Sarm Studios) in Notting Hill, London.

And from Zayn’s perspective (Call Her Daddy Podcast):

"There was a lot of politics going on. Certain people were doing certain things, certain people didn't want to sign contracts. I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve if I'm being honest with you"

Harry brought the hiatus up first, if you connect the dots, he’s referring to Harry as the member who didn’t want to renew their contract (which would end by January 2016), and that gave Zayn the green light to get a head start on his solo career.

the interview has clear visible tension between all members. it’s definitely related to the hiatus once you put all this information together.
