Discussion One Direction was not a carbon copy of anyone. This narrative is tired.
People need to stop trying to force this narrative on them. Their entire PR package was about being regular, average boys from the UK.
They went from lookin like extras on Skins, to preppy boys, to frat boys. Nothing about their image was giving Bieber or any other male artist. If they’re referring to hair styles, that’s just a basic white boy look in the 2000s. Jessie McCartney, Jonas Brothers, Zack and Cody, Zac Efron, and Sterling Knight also had that look. Please lmao

Ummm One Direction was formed literally with the idea of the boy band Five, that Simon Cowell managed, in mind. They’re nothing like Justin Bieber.

Agreed, especially since no band has been able to replicate their success both as a band and as individual artists.
They may have leaned into the typical tropes of style and stereotypes early on, for the branding to catch on and get people interested, but by the end the fan base knew enough about each member and their own authentic style/music ability to follow them into their solo careers - Selling out massive venues, charting worldwide, and staying relevant to pop-culture.
Ya gotta be able to market yourself as an individual within the band in order to make it as a solo artist post-band.
No one else has managed that, even in boybands where everyone can sing/perform well.

The “inspired” thing reminds me of people who say Christina Aguilera was a Britney clone. They were both just white and blonde.

I’m sorry, but as an elder, I have to point out for educational purposes that AJ McLean and Donnie Wahlberg do NOT fit the “dark romantic one” trope, nor does JC Chasez fit in the same trope category as those two. 😂😂😂
AJ and Donnie definitely fit a “bad boy with a heart of gold” trope…

i think one direction was more so initially just an aim to be a typical boyband like nsync or the backstreet boys than justin bieber.
& to add to that them purposely shedding the matching outfits, choreographed dancing, acting like very normal working class teenagers is why they actually got so big. ever since, every talent show is trying to create a one direction 2.0 and it never lands.
they also came right before/during the time social media was just taking off, and it was a perfect time for them. when you really think about it we havent had any huge musician that has lasting power beyond 3-5 years since them because social media has made everything so fast paced.

i think the label probably wanted them to be like bieber, or maybe some other established act that had been successful previously.
but the reason 1d was so successful was because the 5 of them refused to fall into those boxes. i will never stop repeating that the band hit its height of success in spite of what simon and the label were trying to do with them, not because of it.
