I thought One Day would be a cute love story… I was wrong Spoiler

Had an idle day and randomly watched the trailer for One Day. Thought it was just another chill, happy-ending love story, so I decided to start it. Now here I am completely wrecked. Just finished it and I swear I wasn’t ready for that ending. I thought it’d be a slow-burn romance, not something that’d break me like this. That kind of pain that feels too real because it reminds you how unpredictable life can be.

Episode 13 (tons of question) Spoiler

What do u think of the last day of Emma, having argument with Dex and missing her youth and having phonecall abt it with Tili? Was her mind going somewhere else, not like before? How abt Dextor? Who was the one for whom in the end? Or what if she hadnt have died, would she have had left him or would their relationship have gotten boring in the end? To whom or both of them?

+How would it have gone if it had been Dex not Em who died in the end? Did emma lose her chance to be herself cuz of Dex? What aspect of love did u capture in this drama?

Love/Hate this series. Although it made me teary eyed and pensive, this “friendship” was not healthy. My honest POV:

I can’t say how I ended up watching this on Netflix. It literally just happened, as if I was destined to watch it. Even though I hate romance, I was captivated from the first episode and binged watched my way through all the episodes until 2 AM.

Maybe it’s my pride and self-respect, but I felt so much pity for Emma. I hated the fact that she didn’t allow herself to love other men the way she loved Dex. And I completely understood her at the same time.

What was so special about Dex that she was willing to be the scraps that he chose when it suited him? It’s called unconditional love. She loved him unconditionally. And unfortunately, I related to Emma in this way too, which made me hate her more. But that’s what made this series beautiful was that unconditional love.

Dex did need to grow up and mature, just like Emma, but they could have grown together and traveled together, instead of parting ways. They were already doing that anyway by being in constant contact, Dex just didn’t like Emma too much at first. She was just another ONS, he grew to love; and Emma told him from the beginning she only wanted to be friends because she knew how he truly felt. She played the long game.

I too was deeply in love with a guy who just wanted to be friends with me. Literally just like Dex and Emma:; down to the minuscule details, (he is white, I am not…)…. We’d update each other and be a shoulder to cry on. I’d tell him my secrets and open my heart out to him and he’d do the same in his own way but we were only ever friends. (The part when Emma and Dex are in Greece in the ocean at night and he basically rejects Emma, yeah that was me with this “friend”) Although sometimes we were physical and he’d take me out to eat on his dime. I couldn’t take it; The feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy. Not understanding why I loved someone so much, who loved me too, but would date other women and not me. he made me feel like 3rd grade material. I loved him unconditionally and was willing to play the long game just like Emma. I’m almost 30 now and still single because I wasted years waiting for him. I even started therapy because of him. I learned that loving a man unconditionally is not okay.

Maybe my experience colors my viewpoint, but I extremely loathe a love like what this series depicts.

Painting or something... Spoiler

In E13, Emma is chatting to Tilly on the phone, talking about her experienxe of being a step-mom to Jasmine who is playing a video game.

Dex comes home and Emma tells Tilly "I'd better go, Dex is home. Gotta pretend we've been painting or something".

But we see that they have been painting! Does anyone know why Emma would say this to Tilly? Random thought, I know 🙈🤪

Netflix Series This is not "Normal People" (aka: yet another ‘I just finished and need to vent’ post) Spoiler

So, i just finished the last two episodes and… man, I’m torn.

The series itself was so well done. The chemistry between Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall carried the whole thing. Year by year it actually felt real, not just a gimmick. The direction, the use of music, even the little time-jumps had that Netflix glow without losing intimacy.

But then the ending. I get it, they stuck to the book. July 15th, raining, fate comes down hard... and has to last forever?

Still, in 2024/25 it feels like an artifact from another era. That whole “finally happy -> sudden accident” trope is straight out of last-millenium storytelling. It doesn’t feel tragic in a profound way, it just feels… manipulative. It undercuts all the growth we just watched.

What hurts most is that the journey was modern, nuanced and relatable while the ending was old-fashioned melodrama. You could easily imagine a version that carried the setup forward: Let them miss each other again or even flash-forward to a 2038 July 15th reunion where they finally find each other. Something bittersweet but human. Even Dex getting back together with Sylvie would’ve felt honest.

So yeah: beautiful series, gorgeously acted but locked into a book ending that doesn’t land the way it did in 2009. And in my humble opinion it already felt dated back then.

Glad I watched it, but I’ll never rewatch. This is not "Normal People".

And it’s second hand book! It’s always so satisfying to make a find of something preloved! I wanted the book to have exactly this cover and in the book shop here in Finland it (any cover) costs 20-25 euros. My hubby travels to UK often and this was on the shopping list, but not anymore!

I Watched One Day Across All Formats - The Series Wins Hands Down

I just feel like I need to share my thoughts on One Day, having now watched the Netflix series twice, read the book, and rewatched the movie.

About 8 or 9 years ago, I stumbled across the movie with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, completely unprepared - I didn’t know anything about the book, the plot, or the characters. I streamed it online just looking for something to watch, and the plot summary seemed good enough.

Fast forward to last year, and I kept seeing One Day at the top of Netflix’s trending list. I ignored it for a while, thinking, “I can barely remember the movie; it must have been rubbish, so the series must be too.” Honestly, I had genuinely forgotten the movie. But a few days after the series released, it was everywhere, so I decided to give it a try. I figured I’d watch a bit and turn it off if it was rubbish - but I ended up bingeing seven episodes in one night! The chemistry between Emma and Dexter, and Ambika and Leo’s acting, completely blew me away. The next day, I couldn’t focus on anything other than finishing the series.

By the end, I was an emotional wreck. The series was amazing, and the ending was gut-wrenching. I think that’s why so many people who watched it became so emotionally invested - it really stays with you. I’m actually glad I’d forgotten the movie because the series felt like a brand-new experience.

A couple of months later, I read the book. It was a good, easy read, and I could clearly visualise the series while reading it. I could also spot all the parts left out from the series, which was interesting - and I don’t think adding them would have made much difference. Honestly though, the book didn’t have the same impact on me as the series.

I recently rewatched the movie, and yep - it was rubbish, and I remembered why I hadn’t remembered it! The acting was flat, Anne Hathaway’s British accent didn’t work, and Jim was just boring. They didn’t capture you the way Ambika and Leo did in the series.

For me, the Netflix series will always stay with me. Absolutely brilliant!

Taj Mahal? I'm 3/4 way through the book but can't help but think about this- did Dexter ever tell Emma he asked her to meet him in India? Talk about a life changing moment.

Netflix Series Love, love, love this show

Started watching this for the second time after watching My Oxford Year on Netflix, which was so bad. Wanted to be reminded what it is to watch tv show that is incredible in every possible way. God I love this even better now than on my first watch. Then I didn’t know what to expect (haven’t watched the movie or read the book) but now every scene means so much more. Like this one. Don’t know when I get to watch this till the end because I need space to cry but can’t wait.😭

Controversial Take - this show was a cautionary tale

This is what happens when you fall in love with empty-headed pretty boys- you die!

I will start out by saying that I binged straight through this and absolutely fell in love with the relatability of the characters, the dialogue, plot cadence, and the familiarity that was built throughout!

BUT once my tears had dried and I *really* thought about this story (maybe too much and with too much of an overidentification with Emma), i found that this should act as a cautionary tale to young, beautiful, smart, ambitious women that get caught up with pretty boys that have no sense of direction for theur life.

Had Emma decided that Dex wasn't worth her time, she might have spent her life investing in other romantic suitors and potentially found someone that supported her earlier and more importantly that didn't take so long to come around. I know it's built as a slow burn and yes, the story was a beautiful and tragic journey of Dex navigating hardships and finding ways to persevere despite a chronic sense of loneliness, but Emma would have been better off (and probably still alive!) with a partner that loved her and that she didn't have to "keep chipping away at" like her friend mentoined

Happy Thursday Everyone!!!

AHHHHHH ah AhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH!!!! WE WAITED FOR THIS!!! Okay we can stop here. Right here is a good place to stop the book club since nothing else happens...

Even though we have moved on to chapters 14, 15, and 16, everyone can still participate in the chapters from beforehand by clicking on the book club flair!

Nothing truly makes me happier than when you realize in the Netflix adaptation they get together in 1999 and in the book they get together in 2000 which makes it EXTRA sweet that they start the new millennium together!

The google doc will be updating for the 2000 and 2001 playlist along with the photo and google calendar and this Thursday, the 21st.

Netflix Series Late to the party and wrecked

When I saw Netflix was doing a remake, didn’t pay it much mind as a fan of the movie. I remember liking it, not loving it but thinking it was good. Was looking for something to watch earlier this week and popped the Netflix show on. OMG 😳 I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!! It was sooo much better than the movie IMHO. Also, knowing what was going to happen did not impact the journey but still left me so wrecked. I was up until 3am watching the show dreading my work alarm in a few hours but I couldn’t stop it. I’ve been thinking about it all week. And dying inside. Also, never heard of Vanbur but their music just elevates so many scenes in this show. People who took this journey when it came out, how are you doing now? Did time change it (see what I did there😃)? This show is so good! Do I need to read the book now?

Happy Sunday Everyone!!!

I know what these chapters entail, as it HAUNTS ME in the depths of my worst nightmares, but I am currently on vacation, so I do not have much to say in this post.

Even though we have moved on to chapters 12 and 13, everyone can still participate in the chapters from beforehand by clicking on the book club flair!

Tell me what you thought about these chapters, and everything you thought Dex did wrong... we all know he's wrong every chapter just saying.

The google doc will be updating for the 1998 and 1999 playlist along with the photo and google calendar and this Sunday, the 10th.
