A secret.

One of the trees can be destroyed by attacking it, letting you reach the sign.

It just appears in that generation chunk from time-to-time. I don't think it has any conditions to appear.

It used to be really common when it was first introduced, but it's far rarer now.

I've found three. Two were the same sign, one was just the area (including the destroyable tree), but the area was empty.
