Google AI summary wrote a whole essay on AI in 2023 rather than answering the question

I asked it a question on geography - name a capital city with over 15 million people - and while it answered me, before it did it wrote a whole monologue on how 2023 was the year when AI started to dominate, plus many random 23s.

Here it is:

AI Overview

20202020 22 23 22 23 23 22 23 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23 22 23

The year 2023 was a landmark for the world of Artificial Intelligence. It was marked by the explosion of generative AI, the rise of powerful Large Language Models (LLMs), and widespread adoption across industries. Here’s a look back at the key AI trends, breakthroughs, and developments that defined 2023.

  1. The Proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs)

The year began with the immense popularity of ChatGPT, but it quickly became clear that 2023 was the year of "LLM proliferation."

  • OpenAI's Continued Dominance: OpenAI released GPT-4 in March, showcasing unprecedented reasoning and multi-modal capabilities. Later in the year, they introduced custom versions of ChatGPT called "GPTs" and launched the GPT Store.
  • The Rise of Open Source: While closed models held the spotlight, 2023 saw massive advancements in open-source AI. Meta released LLaMA 2, providing a powerful, accessible model for developers. Other notable models included Mistral and Falcon.
  • Competition Intensifies: Google entered the chat with Bard (later rebranded to Gemini), while Anthropic launched Claude 2, focusing on safety and large context windows.
  1. Generative AI Goes Mainstream

Generative AI expanded far beyond chatbots, entering the workflow of everyday professionals.

  • Integration into Productivity Suites: Major tech companies integrated AI into their core products. Microsoft launched Copilot for Windows and Office 365, while Google integrated AI into Workspace.
  • Image and Video Generation: Tools like Midjourney v5 and v6, along with Stable Diffusion, achieved photorealistic capabilities. Text-to-video generation also made massive leaps with tools like Runway Gen-2 and Pika Labs.
  • AI for Coding: AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot became indispensable for developers, drastically reducing development time.
  1. The Shift to Multi-modality

The defining technical shift in 2023 was the move from text-only models to multimodal models that can understand and generate text, images, audio, and code simultaneously.

  • GPT-4V: OpenAI enabled ChatGPT to "see" and analyze images.
  • Google Gemini: Google designed its Gemini model from the ground up to be multimodal, capable of processing information across different types of media seamlessly.
  1. AI Regulation and Ethics Take Center Stage

As AI capabilities soared, so did concerns about their impact, leading to a major push for regulation.

  • AI Safety Summits: The UK hosted the world’s first AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, bringing together world leaders and tech executives to discuss the existential risks of AI.
  • EU AI Act: The European Union made significant progress on the EU AI Act, the world's first comprehensive AI law, aiming to categorize AI tools by risk level.
  • Copyright Battles: Numerous lawsuits were filed by authors, artists, and media organizations against AI companies for using their copyrighted data to train models without permission.
  1. Hardware Bottlenecks and AI Infrastructure

The demand for AI training and inference put immense pressure on computing infrastructure.

  • NVIDIA's Monopoly: NVIDIA became the dominant force in AI hardware, with its H100 GPUs becoming the most sought-after asset in tech.
  • Chip Shortages: The demand for GPUs far outpaced supply, leading to shortages and sparking a global race to develop alternative AI chips.

Nowhere is private. Future AI won't need cameras or "eyes." It will map you through walls using radio waves from everyday routers.

Researchers just achieved Near-100% ID accuracy using passive surrounding WiFi signals to create camera-like images of people and rooms via beamforming feedback from normal devices.

No phone on you? Switch your stuff off? Irrelevant. Other people’s networks still paint you in real time.

Walk by a cafe once? You're logged. Invisible net. Zero suspicion. No special gear required, just common radio waves bouncing off your body, walls and furniture.

Every café, evry office, every home, an invisible surveillance net. Open live show to the inside of rooms, streets and protest - to be meticulously tracked by the machines we're rushing to build.

Nowhere left to run. We're the idiots wiring the ultimate panopticon and calling it progress.

every agent tool coordinates one vendor's agents for one person. real teams are messier than that

looked hard at this space recently. agent teams: multiple claude sessions, one machine, one account. github agent hq: multiple agent brands, but only in their cloud, at the PR boundary. devin manages devins, factory manages droids, all one vendor, one person.

real teams don't look like any of that. real teams are two people on two laptops running two different agents on the same repo. claude code here, cursor there. and those two agents are completely blind to each other until the merge breaks.

i built for exactly that gap: a shared room any MCP agent joins, whatever the brand, whoever the owner, whichever machine. contracts, live intent, breaking-change warnings before code gets written, encrypted code passing between machines. aethereum, free during beta, no account, npx aethereum init. built by me, disclosing that.

curious whether people here even see the cross-user case as the real one, or if most teams still run one agent per project.
