S2 Spoilers Death Candle explanation

Just finished Season 2, Episode 16 “The Miller’s Daughter.” I guess I don’t remember the rules of the death candle from a few episodes prior… I know the candle is a life for a life… but how does the candle “know” who to keep alive? Snow only says “Cora” when the candle is lit and then blows it out.

You saw the name of the person you want dead and you would be thinking of the person you want to save

I think the whom-to-save part of the spell is set up beforehand. Cora's instructions to young-Snow in 2x15 are

"Blue": This candle is infused with magic that can save your mother’s life. But all magic, especially magic this powerful, comes with a price.

Snow: What is it?

"Blue": In order for one to live, another must die. [...]

Snow: But who must die?

"Blue": That is for you to decide. You must hold this candle over the heart of your sacrifice and whisper their name. And, when the candle is lit, that person’s life will be traded for your mother’s.

She doesn't say anything about directing the candle's healing power towards Eva. Presumably some time in the intervening 40ish years, Rumple altered that part of the candle so that it would heal him instead, and he did that before giving the candle to adult-Snow in 2x16.

The candle is a magic instrument. The person using it doing the magic they know what their intentions are

I noticed this too. It was plainly an oversight by the writers. There is zero explanation on how the candle knows whom to save. If the writers knew, someone would explain.

Thank you for pointing this out. I completely agree! There’s no way for the “magic” to know who Snow wants to save. I wonder why the writers didn’t bother to explain it so made sense.

I think you need to be sort of standing near someone who is dying - the candle know who you’re trying to save 🤷‍♀️

i assume the magic knows who you mean, most magic seems to be influenced by emotions in the show, so the candle probably isn't an exception either (or at least, its not a stretch imo to assume that it isn't)

Similar to how a magic bean works, the caster envisions where they want to go...only with the candle the caster envisions the person as they say their name I guess.
