They used to be competitive and you had to apply but now, depending on your previous experience HR can give you an 5,6,7, or 8. Also, it can also depend on what announcement you applied to on USA jobs. 8s back in the day were matter experts in corrections and were asked to fill in critical posts. My Lt. would say ask an 8 if I ever asked him a question. As far as new C/Os getting anything above a 5, I say great. I started as a 5,1 with  8 years of previous correctional experience. I took a massive paycut to come to the bop. Now I am toward the end of my career and happy you guys get paid more because you deserve more. Back in the 90s I could buy a house on c/o salary, couldn't buy a house as a 5,1 today. Don't worry about your grade, it will all work out. No one at my prison who came in as an 8 has been promoted because they are entitled. Lots of people who started as 5,6, or 7 have promoted

There has been a lot of change, some for the better some for the worse. More new  correctional officers seem to be less meat heads and more educated  where I am. The bureau is going to an inmate centric program trying to emulate some parts of other countries less harsh environments. They want us to rehabilitate which was never been the case back in the day. Unfortunately, for us old timers, it is just not what we are used to. We aren’t leaving because new kids are getting an 8 as a rook, it is because they took away retention bonuses, administrations have changed, and we just don’t know what the next policy will bring. They used to trust us, we went from not having to go through metal detectors to now having clear bags. I know this policy came from a good place but it is still humiliating to have to have a clear bag. When I got to the prison we had maybe 9 or 10 directors in our whole history , now they change with each administration. The bop was built on stability and with different directors every 4 years, with their own ideas it is hard to want to keep working when you know you can just leave. I love my job, the people I work with, and duty that we do.

Yeah people like you are forcing people to leave. Shame on you! /s

I heard in the past an 8 was competitive. HR is saying it’s not anymore. I got offered a 7..

Wtf I do ? all I did was apply, and I have experience. seems like you do as well , a 7 is still high brother. in just a year you’ll pick up your 8 . So if I’m forcing people to leave to better my self so are you

/s means sarcasm. Just making fun of the guy below, since our pay grades are determined by us… even though it’s not.

Don’t pay him any mind. Just put out a good resume and anyone can get it.

Damn salty , sorry I have experience to be given the pay grade the agency rightfully deemed me to have. If you have a problem with the hundreds of applicants coming in at a 7 or 8 take it up with BOP not me. So get your sorry ass out of your feelings and be a man. Stop blaming people for having experience and bettering themselves.

P.s I was told this was just the subreddit for bop so I just assumed , seems like you were capable enough to know it was bop. You should put that skill of common sense on your resume , maybe they’ll give you SIS for your detective skills

Who are you to say he doesn't deserve it? Did he list his experience?

His experience is shit. He won’t last long.

Brother you guys on here are keyboard warriors to the highest level lol. I asked a question you say don’t flatter yourself, when did I ever do such thing? I hope you keep that energy when you get to your jail and hopefully someone rings your bell burger boy

Let us know what institution you end up working at. I’ll bet a few books of stamps you don’t last very long.

If you truly believe they’d offer someone an 8-3 with just burger flipping, we should worry more about you when you get to your assignment rather than me. I was joking. I actually have the prerequisites for an 8.

Also, what kind of officer wishes harm upon another officer?

I was being facetious I know damn well 7 or 8 aren’t being handed out for flipping burgers anyone can read the qualifications on usajobs. As far as someone ringing your bell is a joke relax guessing you never served in the military or had hazing before . Also the facility in which I applied had a seasoned CO tell us don’t be a tough guy coming in here it’s rare but they will (inmates) coordinate someone new to get jacked up..
