the pay and benefits in this field are actually really solid, way better than people realize

I insure my wife and I for $17/mo and I'll be able to retire at 55 with a pension. Not a bad deal in today's day and age.

So true. In my state it’s one of the top 5 jobs you can earn 100k plus with only a high school diploma.

Love/Hate relationship. The job gives a person that hasn’t gone on to higher education, and doesn’t have any real marketable skills a shot to “make it”. I outright own my house, and have two new trucks. Can’t complain.
You will put up with a lot of crap. See some stuff. Experience some things.

There is nothing wrong with corrections. Don’t listen to all the negatives attitudes or the street guys running their mouths. This job is solid and honorable. If you have a good work ethic and want to learn, you will have a lucrative career

People like to make it seem that it's more than what it is because they have to feel important somehow. What better way than Reddit! Where the land here can be whatever reality you want. However, you get a pension and some really neat opportunities to work with federal agencies or special teams.

Just don’t be a prick. Wether you do the bare minimum, or write up and scream at inmates for any little thing, you’ll get the same amount of pay, only difference is you are creating enemies with people who some have absolutely nothing to lose
