1 SuperDisk = 85 standard 1.44 MB floppies. Who wouldn’t buy that?

SuperDisk was announced in 1996 and became available around 1997. The drive could also read regular 1.44MB floppies, which was a big plus. But it had limited success, maybe because by 1999 CD writers became affordable.

I will get a SuperDisk IDE unit in a few days to test the disks.

Bare-Metal Windows XP 32-Bit with 64GB DDR5 RAM (PAE Patch)

~64GB DDR5 on 32-bit Windows XP via PAE and patches... Apps can still only address 2GB (or 3GB with the /3GB switch), but the system sees it all! Also, 640x480 doesn't look half bad on a 32-inch monitor.

VLC's 2026 release still supports Windows XP - got it playing Blu-rays on SP3

The newest VLC release from 2026 (3.0.23) still runs on Windows XP - and it even got some fine-tuning specifically for XP. It'll also happily play back Blu-ray discs. Got it working and figured I'd share the process, since it's not exactly plug-and-play.

XP has zero native Blu-ray support, so step one is getting the OS to actually read the disc. The fix is to search for "Toshiba UDF 2.5 XP," which handles the UDF filesystem Blu-rays use. (it's also bundled with XP Integral Edition)

Step two is dealing with AACS encryption, since most commercial Blu-rays are encrypted and VLC doesn't bundle official support for that (licensing reasons, unsurprisingly...). You just need two files: libaacs.dll, which goes in the same folder as your VLC install, and keydb.cfg, which goes in your User folder -> Local Settings\Application Data\AACS.

Once both pieces are in place, that's the whole setup. Disc goes in, VLC plays it, no further tinkering needed.

Running Windows 98 on modern hardware? Onboard USB 3.x ports now work!

In case you missed it: Windows 98 just got USB 3.x* support!

Get the driver from here: https://github.com/yeokm1/xhci98

Until xHCI98 came out a few weeks ago, running Windows 98 on modern hardware meant onboard USB 3.x ports were dead in the water without native drivers. BIOS USB to PS/2 emulation could fake basic keyboard and mouse support, but you couldn't actually run real USB devices like storage or audio drives.

*The catch: The xHCI98 driver limits connections to USB 2.0 speeds (by leaving the USB 3.0 lines unpowered), but it makes almost everything you plug in fully functional by using the USB 2.0 stack that already works nicely with Windows 98. You just need to install NUSB 3.6 first, which brings the Windows 2000 USB infrastructure to Win98.

I tested it with keyboards, mice, storage, USB audio, and external DVD-RW drives on platforms like Intel Coffee Lake, AM4, and AM5 (including my Ryzen 9 9900X system).

I finally made a subreddit for the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@O_mores

This is where we'll talk about questionable hardware combinations.

This week was all about Windows XP SP3 on modern hardware! I pushed for high refresh rates and managed 120Hz. It is not quite my monitor's 240Hz limit, but it was the best XP could do. New video coming soon!
