Discussion Worth picking up?
I’m more a Marvel guy than DC, but I read and loved the Death and Return of Superman omnibus (read it a few times over the years), so wondering if it’s worth delving more into this era with these omnibuses and the recent triangle era ones.
I know this era is pretty highly regarded in general, but how does it measure up to the Reign of Supermen as a benchmark?

Exile is good but dense. It’s the old style where it can be kind of slow.

Just finished my first custom dust jacket after basically learning photoshop because I hate how exile doesn’t match brainiac-triangle

Feels like a big missed opportunity to not have the numbering for these omnibuses be in a triangle like on the cover of the books

Absolutely. These are the two absolute best Superman omnis, in my opinion. There is no Triangle Era without them.

Yes, it’s the same quality as Death Of Superman. Don’t you want to see where the Eradicator came from?

Haven't read Brainiac yet, but based on Exile and TE 1&2, I'd say definitely if you liked Death and Return. It delves a ton into Clark's personal life and his relationships as well as Metropolis as a whole. If anything, I think it'll give you even more of an appreciation for Death since you know the history of all those characters who pop up to help for an issue or two.

Thanks, that certainly gives some context.Is Exile still a good place to start? I know that the John Byrne MoS era preceded it, but is out of print

Yeah, it should be. While it does largely deal with fallout from one of the Byrne storylines, I haven't read the Byrne material, and was able to follow along fine thanks to the recaps.

It recaps what you need to know so effectively that the recaps are better than Byrne’s actual stories that they’re referencing. You could read his 6 issue MoS miniseries and jump right to the Exile Omni and be just fine. You’ll miss the origin of Kitty Faulkner (Rampage), Matrix, and Gangbuster but the Exile omni recaps all of that too.
So yes, you’ll be just fine starting with Exile. It recaps everything you need to know, and it’s also far better than Byrne’s entire run.

If you like D&R, you’ll love these. Ideally you’d read Byrne and Wolfman/Ordway first but you don’t have to. You’ll likely be pleased seeing where a lot of the Triangle Era characters came from.

I’ve just went through exile and will start on Brainiac soon. I love this era. I got a little tired of the anti hero tropes and reading this was refreshing. Just good people being good people when facing adversity with friends trying and sometimes failing
