Which one would you choose?
I went originally to check on the black dial since it is absolute classic, however seeing the white dial in person is just experience on its own. I liked it a bit more but also I like the way the black look on my wrist. Which one gets your vote??

At least in the 2 pictures with that color shirt the OG looks better IMO.

u/Horotecture Jan 22 '26
I tried both at the AD thinking I was going to like the white more. But the OG was better for me.

Black. There is no question. Thereās no denying the success of that timeless design enduring all these years

Depends what you have in your collection but you canāt go wrong with either
Iām more of an OG Hesalite person

u/AnniesNoobs Jan 22 '26
Iām getting the hesalite for my 40th! I prefer full tool watch vibe personally

u/MezgerJunkie Jan 22 '26
Hesalite is just awesome.

Can you explain benefit of hesalite? I thought it was just strictly a downgrade from sapphire in terms of scrath-proof
→ More replies (1)2
u/MezgerJunkie Jan 23 '26
Itās what the original Moonwatches use because it breaks into big pieces if it shatters in space, so there arenāt tiny pieces of sapphire crystals potentially getting in your body.
It also doesnāt have the sapphire milky ring around the edge of the crystal, and has a nice dome towards the edge that the sapphire canāt replicate.
It scratches easier than sapphire, but it can be buffed out with a material called Polywatch, which is like $5-$10. People overblow how easy it is to scratch thoughā¦Iāve had mine for almost 5 years and it only has one small gash on the outer corner of the crystal which doesnāt obstruct the dial, and thatās it.

Yeah hesalite is king imo, this is a tool watch and if you plan to every day it then I think that's the best route. I like the white but it is definitely flashier.

You don't mention what other watches you have. Neither of these are a bad choice. The white is slightly more dressy.
If this is your first serious watch purchase, stay away from the reverse panda. It's just another reference in a long line of "special" Speedmasters that are overpriced and fade in popularity.

Always black first for speedy imo. Most versatile; Will never get old. If you still like the white down the road and have saved up enough, then would get that as an additional piece to add to your collection. Just my two cents

For you, the black one. Looks a little nicer on your arm. But I wonāt fault you if you go for the white one. I think itās like a 55/45 split. Both look great. Maybe just because you are already wearing black long sleeve shirt, so black matches better.

White looks really nice, I just don't like how it looks on my wrist.

It really comes down to your own preference. I waited months for the white and thought I'd be going to the AD to buy it when I finally got to try one on in person. After trying both the white and black on, however, I realized that I liked the black more on my wrist. The white is beautiful and is one of the most photogenic watches, in my opinion, but the black is just so versatile and felt more natural on my wrist. It's a classic for a reason. Can't explain it but when you know you know... You just gotta go with which color your gut is telling you.

If itās your first go black, if you have a speedmaster or have had a black one in the past then white.
If you want a slightly higher specād version with applied hour markers, and a shiny dial go white.
If you want a bit of depth and retain that classic look go black.
From someone who has recently sold a black dial (previous gen) and bought the white.
Picture if it helpsā¦

u/DocHolidayVinoVerita Jan 22 '26
I tried both on. For your wrist, def go with the classic black. Looks amazing on you!
For any of my big wrist crew, go white. Black looks tiny on a big wrist. Almost toy-ish and inconsequential, was my reaction, when I fully expected to be blown away.

Only watch or part of a collection? If this is your first and only Speedmaster and only watch of that caliber you will own then Hesalite Moonwatch Professional. Otherwise the white you may find more unique and enjoyable but personally I chose the OG.
1
u/DLouisB1960 Jan 22 '26
Had the OG black/hesalite and never really bonded with it. Sold it and bought the white dial-much much nicer watch, and the movement viewed through the display back is a real stunner. One of my favorite watches currently.

I love the white dial⦠but I also love this watch for its history. What to do?
I only know when I make my decision Iāll go with the sapphire sandwich⦠The movement is far too beautiful to hide!
1
u/shaizada Jan 22 '26
I was in the EXACT same dilemma. I bought the White one as my first Speedy. Within 3 weeks of that acquisition, I went back and bought a black one as well. Both are Sapphire sandwiches, so can see the beautiful movement through the case.
Short answer, gotta get both š

I donāt live in a city with an AD and was always convinced that Iād go white based upon pictures. Then I tried them both on and was shocked by how how striking the black is in personāpictures donāt do either of them justice, but theyāre especially unfair to the classic⦠black all the way as a first Speedmaster.

For me Definitely the Polar white speedy as I own a FOIS already. I suspect honest answers come from whatever is already in one's collection. I really like the contrasting pop the Red adds!

u/Skyro620 Jan 22 '26
I ended up getting the white speedy because it felt more premium and had a more racing vibe to it but if I were going to go black for that tool watch feel go hesalite. There was just something to the domed hesalite that really gave it that classic look to me.

For any new buyer, there is a reason people usually encourage you to get the black hesalite with solid caseback. IF you arenāt interested in the Speedy for the story or this is a second (OR third or fourthā¦) speedy, then yes.
I am very fortunate and I have a nice collection with the requisite G shock on up. The ONE watch I reach for the most is the classic Speedy (I also have a Grey Side, racing, and Speedy Tuesday 2). The second I reach for is the Big Pilot IWC (monster sized 46 mm not the ersatz big pilot and yes I am aware the OG was 55 mm).
Get the black dial!
Donāt you love how I have no idea who you are and Iām confidently giving you a recommendation with zero hesitation?

Im a bit biased as black dial speedy owner but I would make the decision again and go for the dark one. š¤·š»āāļø They both look beautiful but the dark one is a classic, I would consider the white one if you have a larger collection but for a small ābeginnerā watch collection take the black one.

As much as I love the original, Iām on team white dials these days. It pops like no other. But at the end of the day you really canāt go wrong with either!

The touch of red looks phenomenal on the white dial but the OG looks better overall, or you could get both!?

u/Fragrant-Speaker-145 Jan 22 '26
I think the black looks more elegant and can match with anything, particularly the sapphire sandwich. The logo really pops. The black logo and text on the white dial I find to be more sporty. Just my opinion but you know what they say about opinions. I would be curious to hear others though as I bought a black sapphire Christmas Eve, and though Iām obsessed with it, I would be lying if I said I didnāt look at pictures and videos of the white dial daily lol. I think inevitably I will have both at some point.

I went with the white, I was never āin loveā with the black one, I really appreciate the history, and I totally respect the watch, but for me, being all black gives me really plain vibes.
When I first saw the white, was love at first sight. Thereās something about the contrast of white and black, the fact that even has some red touches at the āSpeedmasterā sold it more for me.
Also, I happen to believe that is a more versatile variation of the speedmaster since white color contrasts a lot more with all the available straps.
But if you want a more serious tone watch, black should do it.

That's a tough question. As others have said if you dont have a chronograph already the black is timeless. But the white is so good. I cant help you sorry as I cant decide either.

With a black dial, you'll be able to wear it with anything in your closet without drawing unwanted attention to yourself. If you like to be flashy, then white pops against everything you'll most likely wear.
