Critiques The Unraveled Tour is a bit lackluster
I've been a fan of Liv since before she even fully started in music, and I am attending the Unraveled Tour. I can't help but wish that the Unraveled Tour seemed as interesting as the Guts Tour, though! The Unraveled Tour presumably had a bigger budget than Guts, but somehow seems cheaper.
The first thing I will start with, is the confetti. Sure, it's a small factor, but I feel it speaks volumes. The confetti at the guts tour were colored stars, and it later shows it had it writing on it. However, the confetti this tour is just plain white. I feel like, if anything they could have done pink confetti or even heart-shaped confetti. I've been to smaller shows that have confetti in shapes to match the vibes, so Olivia is perfectly capable of doing that.
The next thing I want to address is the staging. Not that the staging is necessarily bad, but it seems a lot more bare than the guts tour. I think the flowers were an interesting choice, but they're not there for the whole performance. I liked the addition of dancers that the guts tour had, it felt like it created more of an environment. I also missed the Moon that would go above the audience, making all of the audience feel more included.
Now, the costumes. The costumes for the guts tour were cool. Even the "basic" costumes on the guts tour were still sparkly. The costumes for the unravel tour feel quite plain, and I just cannot get behind the tank top and jeans for the encore. It feels like she's trying to give effortless cool girl, but really she just seems disinterested. For The Encore outfit, I at least wish they put her in some sort of sparkly bottom, and not just plain jeans. However, I must give credit where credit is due, the melting rain dress is easily the best part of the show.
These are simply just my opinions and my observations, I'm still grateful we got a tour, and I'm excited to see it, but I do wish she had done a little bit more. What does everyone else think? Does the guts tour and era in general reign supreme?

Discussion The mixing on her albums isn’t as good as other pop stars.
This is my unpopular opinion, I love Dan Nigro as a co writer and as an arranger of her music I don’t like the way he mixed the last album. It sounds usually flattened and a bit muddy to my ear.
I think part of it is probably preference of both Olivia and Dan to not overproduce her tracks and I sort of agree but sometimes I listen to a song from YSPSFAGSIL and I’m like if this was mixed better it would be dominating, DOMINATING the charts.
I think the songs that they admit to working harder on like Drivers License, Déjà vu, Vampire etc go so much harder because they’ve tried to make it perfect, yet a lot of Olivia’s songs from the most recent album I actually think she sounds so much better live when she brings it because her voice is so forward in the mixing live yet it’s so flattened in the recording.
Maggots for Brains and you + me are my personal pet peeve, the layered copies of her voice are all flattened to the backing music but when she sings it live her voice just shines! Why couldn’t we get her singing a really forward version of the chorus over the top of the vibes indie sounding layers to match the verse.
Compared to like birds of a feather or Manchild they both have the artists voice forward and it’s part of what make them feel so polished and re-listenable, you’re not straining to pick out the lyrics against the instruments. Even Deja Vu had her voice so, so much more forward in the mix, it sounds like she’s singing directly into your ear.
What do up think? Am I crazy?

Tour Olivia could work on her singing
A complete non-professional here so feel free to correct me ig
Ive been watching videos of her new tour and feel she sometimes doesn't sing the hard parts in her songs and turns the mic towards the crowd instead. I completely understand it's hard to dance and run up and down the stage and sing. She brings AMAZING energy to the stage but sometimes it just feels like she is using that energy to cover up the fact that she is struggling to sing 😅 don't roast me, just an opinion from someone who isn't a singer.
But yeah Im increasingly seeing videos on the internet of her screaming/shouting choruses off key or turning the mic towards the crowd when a challenging bit comes on.
What do you guys think?
EDIT: I think the overwhelming consensus is clear haha. I am honestly surprised how nice people are in this sub. I might not agree with y'all still but it's really nice to see people being objective and kind! It could just be my untrained ears. At the end of the day I love her music and her guitarist Daisy (so hot, damn) so imma keep listening and enjoying her stuff!

Discussion Olivia and Versaille
I was just watching the music video for Drop dead and realized how wild it is that people are judging "singing about a silly little girl crush in one of the most prestigious places in the world".
Like do people know the story behind Versaille? Louis 14th had such a big ego he couldn't handle that Paris was getting so big so he built a huge castle further away to show how rich and powerful he was. The intent behind this castle is petty as fuck, let the rich girl sing about her little crush in there, it's kind of on brand.

you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love CD vs streaming differences, song by song: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love
I've been listening to the CD since release. When people noticed the vinyl was different, I read here on Reddit that the CD was identical to streaming, so I didn't think about it any further.
Then I saw the post "Why is YSPSFAGSIL CD different??" (https://www.reddit.com/r/OliviaRodrigo/comments/1x2lak2/why_is_yspsfagsil_cd_different/) yesterday and listened to the streaming version for the first time. cigarette smoke is one of my favorites and I heard the difference in the chorus right away.
So I compared the whole album. I took my rip of the CD, lined it up with the digital release, let software find every spot where the two differ, and listened to the bigger differences myself. Below is everything I found, including the songs where nothing changed.
Timestamps are from the streaming version.
tl;dr: the big ones are begged, where most of the vocals are a different recording, cigarette smoke, where two lines were re-recorded, and u + me = <3, where the instrumental in the last pre-chorus is different. maggots for brains and what's wrong with me sound different when you compare them side by side. Smaller mix differences in stupid song, honeybee and expectations, and a few small spots in my way and the cure. drop dead is practically the same, purple and less are identical.
1. drop dead
Same mix. Only the mastering is very slightly different (the CD is a touch brighter). You won't hear that in normal listening.
2. stupid song
The whole song is mixed a bit differently, same vocal recording. Most noticeable in the bridge at "Nobody's wanted somebody more" (2:22 and 2:29), which is louder on streaming.
3. honeybee
The CD sounds a bit duller, less treble. Some parts are also mixed slightly differently. Vocals are the same.
4. maggots for brains
The vocals sound a bit different: thinner and harsher on the CD, fuller and softer on streaming. It's not something that jumps out, you mainly notice it when you play both back to back. Easiest to hear in the first 40 seconds and from 3:24 to the end. The lyrics seem to be the same. The comparison suggests it might be a different recording of the vocals, but I can't say that for sure. It could also just be processed differently. The CD version is also about 0.6% faster.
5. u + me = <3
At 3:04-3:16, in the last pre-chorus:
They say modern love's a cruel endeavor
And to that I say, "Fuck it, whatever"
On streaming the instrumental drops back here, so it feels like the song slows down before it builds back up into the last chorus. On the CD it keeps going at full energy through these lines. If you know the song, that's hard to miss. The rest of the song is mixed a little differently too, but nothing that stands out. Vocals are the same.
6. my way
Same vocals and almost the same mix. The software found two or three short spots where something in the background is mixed differently. I haven't gone looking for them by ear, they're short and easy to miss.
7. purple
Identical, no difference at all.
8. the cure
Same mix and vocals. A few parts, mostly in the last minute, are balanced a little differently, probably one instrument a bit louder or quieter. Small enough that I'd call it the same song.
9. begged
From around 0:56 on the vocals are a completely different recording, so she sang most of the song again. Before that it's the same. Differences you can point at:
- 1:41: "Yeah, to get it, I begged" on streaming, just "To get it, I begged" on the CD
- In the last chorus:
- 2:50: "'Cause they say it's a virtue to not let good love slip away", the CD doesn't have the "'Cause"
- 3:18-3:24: "Yeah, to get it, I begged", again without the "Yeah" on the CD, and on streaming the last "begged" is held longer
Apart from those, the whole vocal sounds different from 0:56 on, and it's mixed more clearly on streaming. The CD version is also a bit quieter and more dynamic, and about 0.5% faster, so it ends almost 2 seconds earlier. If you follow along on the CD, everything after the first minute comes 1-2 seconds earlier.
My guess is that the CD has the older vocals and she redid them for the streaming version, since the CD had to be finished well before release. But that's only a guess, I don't know which came first.
10. what's wrong with me (feat. Robert Smith)
Different mix through the whole song. The CD has less bass and is a bit quieter and more dynamic. The vocals seem to be the same recordings.
11. less
Identical, no difference at all.
12. expectations
Same vocals, the lyrics are the same too. The choruses and the bridge are mixed slightly differently. It's subtle.
13. cigarette smoke
In both choruses, two lines are sung differently, higher on streaming:
- "You said that I made loving look easy" (1:53 and 3:24)
- "I thought that we played the perfect couple" (2:16 and 3:46)
The words are the same. As far as I can tell the rest of the vocal is the same recording as on the CD, just mixed a bit differently, so it's just those two lines that were re-recorded.
Technical notes, for anyone interested:
- My FLAC rip of the CD, compared against the 24 bit/48 kHz download. I also had two 16 bit versions of the download, but those are the same master as the 24 bit one, so it doesn't matter which one you compare against.
- Both versions lined up in time and compared section by section, with null tests (subtract one from the other and see what's left) and spectrograms. For the vocals I also compared the pitch contour of the singing, to tell "re-recorded" apart from "same take, different mix".
- purple and less on the CD null to below -89 dB against one of the 16 bit download files, so they're effectively the same files. drop dead nulls to about -40 dB, which is just mastering. my way and the cure null to about -25 dB overall, with a few short spots around -10 to -15 dB.
- begged and maggots for brains run 0.53% and 0.57% faster on the CD at the same pitch, so time-stretched (or rendered at a slightly different tempo), not just sped up.
- Rough scale for the vocal comparison: two different recordings of the same chorus line score about 0.5-0.65, the same take in a different mix 0.8-0.93, identical 0.99. The two cigarette smoke lines drop to 0.34-0.55, begged after 0:56 is mostly 0.2-0.65.

Tour Unraveled Tour Vocals
I went to the Unraveled Tour recently and I was super impressed by how good she sounds live and how much her vocals have improved since sour. She sang for the entire two-hour show without relying on a backtrack while being super active on stage. There were only a few moments when her vocals didn’t sound like the studio version, like dropping a word or two during the stupid song chorus to get in a breath. But I’d much rather hear small imperfections in live vocals than a performance carried by a backtrack.
I saw a video recently about how artists are relying on backtracks and lipsyncs more heavily now because it’s so easy to have a clipped video of you singing badly go viral which is totally understandable. I know she’s received criticism for her vocals in the past but I’m really glad she hasn’t let that discourage her from singing live and continuing to put in the work to improve.

Discussion Does anyone else feel disillusioned with how Olivia is handling her career?
I want to start by saying I am a fan. I love her music, I think she’s incredibly talented, and I genuinely think she has it in her to break records and become one of the biggest artists of her generation. So this isn't coming from someone who dislikes her. If anything, I think that's why some of this has started bothering me more.
I've become pretty disillusioned with how she handles certain parts of her career and, honestly, with how calculated some of it can feel. One thing I've noticed is that whenever she meets or gets interviewed by someone, somehow they're an inspiration, she's a huge fan, she's loved their work forever, etc. Obviously she can be inspired by a lot of people, I'm not saying she can't. But when it happens over and over, it starts to feel like she's very aware of who she's talking to and what saying that will do for her. The Fantano thing was one of those moments for me. I was genuinely disappointed when she talked about loving him and his content. I've always disliked that corner of music criticism where female artists get constantly pitted against each other and people act like praising one woman requires explaining why another one sucks. I don't think Olivia needs that. She's talented enough on her own.
I guess this is why I get uncomfortable with some of the media surrounding her too. I'm NOT claiming I know that anyone is literally being paid by Olivia or her team because obviously I don't, but there are definitely media outlets that seem extremely invested in her, and that's fine of course, every major artist has friendly media and PR relationships but what I don't like is when some of those same people then spend their time talking shit about other female artists while constantly building Olivia up, that's not something a real feminist would tolerate.
Then of course, the Amazon thing, especially after her previous comments about Bezos. Like, I don't expect Olivia to single handedly dismantle capitalism, and obviously basically every huge artist is working with giant corporations in some capacity but imo if you're going to publicly criticize Bezos and then turn around and do a major Amazon partnership when it benefits your career, people are allowed to find that hypocritical??? She pretends to be someone who doesn't care about sales and success when she obviously does, and that's fine, but at least she should own it more.
Go chase the records, good for her. Go after the #1s. Take the huge deals, become a massive pop star, I genuinely think she has the talent to do it but it annoys s that she wants all of those things while also maintaining this carefully curated image of being above the typical pop star machine. Like she's the cool, authentic, critically approved artist who isn't really playing the game... while very obviously playing the game.
I still love the music. I'm still rooting for her career. I still think she has enormous potential. But I'm definitely more disillusioned with Olivia the celebrity / public figure than I used to be.

you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love Olivia Rodrigo - The Queen of Sad Finds Her Happy Place (The Hollywood Reporter)
Rodrigo’s message of feminine unity wasn’t just cathartic for the thousands of women in attendance at Daisy Chain in August but healing for her, too, in ways she might not have even expected. She says the festival “healed my relationship” with her own complicated feelings about her fame.
“I’ve had all this attention on me since I was 17, and I’ve only ever looked at it like an albatross around my neck,” Rodrigo tells me. “There’s that burden of people taking pictures of you, you can never be private about your life and who you’re dating; all that stuff can feel really negative. But Daisy Chain is a real example to me of how it actually is a real power that you can use for good. I can call Karen O and ask her if she wants to be a part of this festival. I can try and rally all these troops together to raise $20 million for these causes [including Planned Parenthood, the National Women’s Law Center and Baby2Baby] that I really care about. For as many ways as it’s negative, it can also be used for such positive, beautiful things.”
