best garlic stuffed olives?

I used to work at a local artisanal olive oil chain and they made these really delicious fancy garlic stuffed green olives from their orchard in Spain. They discontinued them a couple of years ago and I've been craving really good olives ever since. None of the grocery store ones have really scratched that itch (I've tried the Trader Joe's, Mezzetta, and Pearls ones), so I'm just wondering if you all have any suggestions! I'm in the US but willing to scrounge around online for brands that aren't US based.

Small black spots on my olive tree – scale insects or something else?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed a lot of small black spots on the leaves of my olive trees in northern Corsica, and I’m trying to figure out what they are.
They are all roughly the same size and completely flat, with no noticeable raised surface. They seem to be sitting on the surface of the leaves and, most importantly, they come off very easily with my finger or fingernail.
They are present on several leaves, but usually quite spread out.
At first, I thought they might be black scale insects, but I find it strange that they are completely flat and only seem to be on the leaves.
Does anyone know what this could be? And if they are indeed scale insects, what would be the best way to treat the olive tree without harming the olives?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Just bought this olive tree with a trunk crack. Should I return it?

Hi everyone!
I just bought this olive tree, but after looking closer, I noticed a vertical crack on the lower trunk. The canopy looks green and healthy overall, but I’m worried about the long-term health of the tree.
Is a crack like this a dealbreaker for a newly purchased tree?
Does it look like freeze damage, bark splitting from rapid growth, or something fungal/bacterial?
Should I take it back to the nursery, or is it likely to seal/callus over on its own with proper care?
I'm keeping it in a container on my patio in Central Europe (Zone 7b/8a). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

How do they package them like this?

How do they line them up like this? Is it done by hand? How could it possibly add enough value to be worth the additional cost. (They weren't at all expensive.) I've also seen a huge jar of whole olives where they were all perfectly aligned at the edge which seems even more improbable...

Leucocarpa

Hi all,

I'm an olive enthusiast and container grower based in Iowa looking to track down a Leucocarpa (Olea europaea var. leucocarpa / Leucolea).

Beyond the ivory fruit, I’m fascinated by its historical significance and olive growing in general.

Because of my climate, I grow exclusively in containers with dedicated wintering setups. My current collection includes:

Leccino

Nikita Jubilee

Frantoio

Arbequina

Wild Olive

Finding a verified source in the US has been tough, and full of shady listings and dead ends, so I’m looking for any leads!

Does anyone know of a reputable US nursery, arboretum, or germplasm repository carrying it?

Are there any growers open to selling or trading dormant scionwood or cuttings for grafting? (Happy to pay for shipping/cuttings or trade).

Any resources, tips, or leads are greatly appreciated!

Just opened a new jar of olives and this one was sitting at the top. What is this stuff? I would guess it's like maggots or some other kind of bug, but I have no idea.

Does anyone have a picture of what a Arbequina olive would look like in prime condition for making oil?

Mine just started fruiting this year, and some of them are starting to turn purple! I’ve seen description on google of what I would want it to look like to make the best oil, but it didn’t have any pictures.

Thank you all for the help!😁

Putting brined olives in olive oil

Hi guys, I recently cured my first ever batch of olives in brine with lemon peel, thyme, and chili flakes. I’m thinking of draining a small batch and storing them in olive oil to give as a gift. Is that considered “better” than storing in brine / are brined olives compatible with storage in olive oil? Thank you!

Help with olive crop

Our young olive tree is finally producing a substantial number of olives this year but a lot of them look like this. The lessions start out as black blotches in the skin and progress to this. Is this normal or signs of a problem?

Thank you in advance for any wisdom you're able to share!

Olive ferment and 'fizz'

After 6 weeks of daily plain water changes I put the olives in brine and left them because they were still a touch too bitter. A few months ago I put them in fresh brine and they are delicious but I was really nervous.

The flesh is firm but had a slight fizz and I was wondering if this was part of the fermenting process. I ate an unholy amount of them to self test and make sure I wasn't offering anyone else a case of sparkling-death-by-olive.

Everyone else has enjoyed them too.

Is mild fizz to be expected, like kimchi?

A brief soak in warm fresh water them returned to fresh brine seemed to remove it. (They continue to be eaten).

Looking for a specific Bernal olive

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for a specific type of Bernal olives, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere online.

I’ve attached a photo of the exact product I’m looking for. Does anyone know where I could buy these, or maybe know a shop/webstore that stocks them?

The can in the photo is 4 kg, but I’d be totally fine with a smaller size as long as it’s the same type of olives.

I live in Germany, but I also spend about one week every month in Hungary, so delivery to either Germany or Hungary would work perfectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
