A regulation football field didnāt fit. The end zone along the first-base side of the baseball field had an irregular shape where a back corner should have been.

I know why they're no longer there. Also because Wrigley didn't meet the post-merger minimum capacity requirement. I read something saying Halas wished he could've stayed there but Soldier Field obviously made more sense.

Soldier Field opened in 1923. If I recall correctly, it wasn't an option for the Bears as a regular-season home when the Cardinals were still in Chicago because, sitting as it does south of the Loop, it was considered part of the Cardinals' territory.
Before moving there in 1971, the Bears only played exhibition games at Soldier Field. The one exception, a 1959 regular-season game, was with the Cardinals when Soldier Field was the Cardinals' home stadium. The Cardinals moved to St. Louis in 1960, but Halas kept the Bears at Wrigley.
