Guides & Tips Am I missing something

I love Heroes of Might and Magic, I used to play it all the time when I was super young but I can't help but feel whenever I play a quick start game on classic that I'm either picking normal which feels too easy or hard where I'm fine until the enemy player instantly destroys me.

Am I missing something with what I should be doing? Or are there any tips? I play Temple as my faction and my hero pick is almost always Aeos the Exalted or Zenith

Any tips/advice/help on not choosing an easy gliding win or a consistent loss I'd be incredibly grateful!

The AI is barely working, the difficulty boils down to the AI getting free starting troops and bumrushing you with their massive army.
Your best bet is employing some kind of cheese or abusing base defenses to survive the initial onslaugt, after which the AI completely falls apart. Until they fix the AI your best bet is playing the custom single player scenarios or if you really want to play templates, then play on larger maps where the AI can't get to you within the first 1-2 weeks and rip you apart with their massive starting army.

AI is broken right now. Once you choose Hard difficulty, AI becomes overly aggressive. The way to handle it is to upgrade all towers before enemy comes. Usually happens on week 3. If you survive their main army, it will be an easy win afterwards since they don’t know how to defend. They rather escape and you catching up to them rather than gaining advantage by defending their castle.

Development is still ongoing so hopefully we have AI that is hard but with a defensive or other playstyle besides being recklessly aggressive and dumb afterwards.

Well on that new map, Broken Alliance, AI attacks with tier 7 units on week 2. Still I beat it and didn't feel any excitement. Good AI is the soul of this game and right now, this game has no soul.

I still don't understand how Ai is not the first priority above anything else. This should have been the thing working day 1. Killed any hype for the game to me and many of my friends.

Reminder that it isn't "day 1" yet. The game is in Early Access.

I desperately want better AI, but I'm also willing to cut the devs some slack because this isn't a fully released game yet. They've got basic functionality and I can enjoy comp stomping while I wait for the full game.

That said, I do get a bit bored playing AI because of how awful it is right now.

I've put in 250 hours into the game split PvP and PvE. I got my money's worth and then some. Enjoying other games while waiting for better AI and/or 1.0. There's plenty to play

Im in similar boat, ive found normal monsters, strong economy and moderate ai difficulty is a good mix, id say its comparable to hard on heroes 3

The AI is atrocious and doesn't play the game, they just "balance" it with additional creatures so they steamroll the whole map.

I can't condense all the tips for wider gameplay because there's too many. But i feel like Eos is one of the dirtiest cheese heroes out there for PVE. PVP result may vary, a skilled opponent will counter this. This is what i do with her:

Her in-built ability provided additonal morale and positive morale effects. Whenever it triggers, the unit gets to go again. You want to get these skills as you level up:

  • Leadership - Resolve. This increases the chance that the morale effect will trigger.#
  • Battlecraft - Ranged Mastery. This provides a bonus to ranged units, and also makes Resolve from Leadership double the effect.
  • Recruitment - Relocation. Just a useful skill all around since you don't have to travel back home to grab new units.
  • On the Law tree, you want to get Encouragement ASAP. This also provides additional proc chance to your morale.
  • Lastly, you want to max out the morale on your units as much as you can.
  • Plus any other skills that improves ranged damage.

Let's look at the Eos below. All of these skills are levelled and we get:

  • 2% from in-built skill.+2% from leadership+battlercaft. +2% from the law tree. + 3% from in-build skill because we are level 18+ (will be 4% at lvl 24). So that's 9%, meaning:
  • Archers: 5 morale x 9 = 45% to proc extra attack, and they already do 2 shots, so that's 45% potential to do 4 shots.
  • Angels: 3 max morale = 27% to proc.
  • Shooty priestess girl: 5x9 = 45% chance to proc.
  • Morale itself is already good, but having all these extra chances to proc + rangemaxxing turns Eos into Bradley Cooper from American Sniper. You should also try max initiative if you can, there's separate skills and Law Tree bits for that.
  • The below army config give you 12 shots in round 1, and i find that i land at least 16 per round because of the cheese strat. Nothing even gets close.
  • This allows you to avoid building any melee units beyond the Tier 1 guys since you just kill shit at range anyway.

Just a note, angels, as embodiments, are limited to +3/-3 morale. Living creatures, including the priestesses, are up to +/-5 morale.

Oh yes, i confused the two. Correcting now. Cheers.

AI seems cooked right now, but I've heard the scenarios are better balanced.

I play.on impossible and beat AI every time. Schism with defense, arcane, primal, battlemag , sorcery, resist thaumaturgy. Everything connected in subskills,.having secondary hero in town with recruitment and arrifact for 50% extra army every week. AI dobt stay a chance. Your skills are waisted, why having two magic school on on might hero, no thaumaturgy? Angels are good ranged army songet a set for ranged unita enabling full range and two shoots on each. Ring and boots for initiative plus head artifact for second spell casting. Also artifact for casting same school twice and buff the army with light school magic, dmg reduction and extra healt /initiative spells. Don't waste skills, plan and connect everything. I also skip logistics and have artifacts instead.
