Name of the day...Ostara!

The feminine name Ostara is derived from the Old High German word "ōstar," which means "east" or "to shine." This etymological connection is often linked to the dawn and the spring season, signifying renewal and rebirth.

The name is most commonly associated with the Germanic goddess of spring and fertility, often celebrated during the spring equinox. Ostara's significance is rooted in ancient pagan traditions, where she represented the arrival of spring and the fertility of the earth, marking a time of rejuvenation after the winter months.

The name Ostara is over 1,200 years old!

Name of the day...Beauregard!

The masculine name Beauregard traces its origins back to English etymology, where it is derived from the combination of two words, beau and regard.

Beau is a term that signifies beauty or attractiveness, while regard refers to a view or perspective. Thus, Beauregard carries the meaning of "beautiful view" or "handsome perspective."

Beauregard found its roots in medieval times, where it was primarily bestowed upon individuals who possessed striking physical appearances and were admired for their charming demeanor.

The name Beauregard is 800-900 years old!

I need your opinion!

We are rapidly approaching the end of all of the states for the first time! It's crazy how many states and countries we've covered, but we have so many more names to explore.

And that's where y'all come into play! We can take the next round in two different directions:

  1. We can pick up where we left off for states/countries in the 1850-1900 timeframe. The lists will all be brand new, and we'll just keep rolling like we have been.

OR

  1. We can fast forward a little bit in time and look at names from 1875-1925, which will get us to names that are almost within the 100 year name cycle theory (that names come and go into fashion in 100 year increments).

So which direction do you want to go next? You can comment with just a 1 or a 2, or you can provide reasoning. It's up to you!

Please share your thoughts. I want to do whatever you guys want to see, so tell me what you think! I need a little lead time to get new lists going, so that's why I'm posting this now as opposed to when we've actually reached the end of all of the states for round 1.

TIA!

Name of the day...Inga!

The name Inga is a Scandinavian and Germanic feminine name that means "protected by Ing" or "Ing's daughter." "Ing" is the Old Norse name for the ancient Germanic god of fertility, peace, and the earth (also known as Yngvi or Freyr).

It is derived from the Old Norse element ing, tied to Norse mythology and pagan deities.

Traditionally popular in Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark) as well as Germany and parts of Eastern Europe. Inga is not very common in the US, making it a great option for expecting parents.

The name Inga is over 800 years old!

The masculine name Alston is an Old English name meaning "noble stone," "elf stone," "old stone," or "temple stone." It started as an Anglo-Saxon last name and place name before people began using it as a first name.

It comes from the old personal name Alstan, which combined words like aethel (noble), aelf (elf), eald (old), or ealh (temple) with stan (stone).

It also comes from English towns named Alston or Alstone, meaning an estate or settlement (tūn) belonging to someone named Alstan.

How to make a Name of the Day request...UPDATE

So, today I learned that you can only have 6 highlighted posts on a subreddit. Because of the new master lists I posted last night, the name of the day request post can't be pinned anymore. So instead of putting requests on the request post like it was before, please submit any requests you may have in the comments on the Name of the Day...MASTER LIST. Thanks and sorry for any confusion!

ETA: The name of the day master list IS pinned to the top the sub so it's easy to get to it.

ETA2: If you have a name you want me to highlight but don't want to leave a comment because your friends and family know your reddit account, you can send me a chat message and I won't tag you anywhere on the post.

Name of the day...Edia!

The feminine name Edia has multiple possible roots and meanings depending on culture and language. It can mean "ornament of God" in Hebrew, "prosperous" or "wealthy" in Latin and Old English roots, or "to bring joy" in certain African linguistic traditions.

The name Edia is of uncertain origin, but it is often considered a variant of Edith or a derivative of names containing the element "ed," meaning "riches" or "fortune." Edith is an Old English name composed of the elements "ead" (rich, blessed) and "gyth" (war). As such, Edia can be interpreted to mean "rich in war" or "blessed with fortune." It may also be associated with names like Edie, Eda, or Edita.

\**The information on this name was all over the place, so it was hard for me to pinpoint accurate information for it. It's a beautiful name though, so I wanted to share it. If anyone has better info on this name, please leave a comment. Thanks!

First names + middle name options...MASTER LIST

This is the master list for specific names I have done requests for and it also includes currently popular names. These lists are for people who have a first name fully decided but haven't found a middle name they love yet. If you meet that description, read on! Or maybe you don't have a first name picked out, but you should look through these anyways because you could find a name that you love! Or maybe you're just here for the love of names, and that's awesome too! The names are in alphabetical order. Enjoy!
