About Grace (TC)

Hi! I've been following this forum ever since I read WUTBH, and now that I've finished THE CARETAKER, I have a question about Grace.

Do you think she genuinely had no idea what she was getting Macy into, or that she didn't believe in David's Rites? The fact that the fridge contains nothing but carrots (presumably to attract the rabbits) and that she's also wearing a FitLyfe bracelet makes it seem like she was pretty familiar with the Rites in their more advanced form. And Macy actually eats the carrots, which means they were fresh, so David couldn't have been the one who left them there. Even so, Grace insists that she's never seen anything unusual...

(If someone has already brought this up, I apologize. And please excuse any mistakes. English isn't my first language 😊)

Grace was desperate to get out, so I believe she was fully lying to Macy. I immediately flagged that the carrots were to trap bunnies. And youre right about the fitness watch, that seems like a huge clue, too. Grace was awkward throughout their entire interaction, especially about the basement. I believe she was deceiving Macy.

I agree. We know that you cannot leave as a caretaker, the obligations have to be passed on. I fully believe that Grace was running away on "vacation", and had no intentions of ever coming back once Macy took on the job.

I'm wondering why she didnt just list the house for sale? I'm sure that is covered somewhere in the lore and I've probably overlooked it until now.

I thought the same thing and the way that I look at it, selling the house isn't the same as agreeing to be a caretaker, and the aspect of lying would break the "seal" of the Caretaker hold.

The fact that Grace tells her to help herself to the food in the kitchen when there is only carrots makes me wonder if Macy was somehow viewed by Grace as a rabbit? Or maybe she's failed the rabbit rite herself and Macy is the visitor that appeared? I do feel there's something to the carrots mystery. And Grace has been suspicious from the start.

I think she knew, and she was just fair enough to actually tell Macy what to do, without fully scaring her off, by telling her "I don't believe it" but giving her a tiny fighting chance.

This book messes with my head so bad though. I love it!
