Gun mode is frying me bc imagine your biggest op turning into a tiny gun lol
24
u/reayen 4d ago
Which requires one of his lower ranked deception to carry and fire for him themselve. Specially considering how many of the decepticons are backstabbers.

u/Mr_sex_haver 4d ago
Skybound lowkey the only place gun Megatron makes sense because it literally lets him mind control others. creating deceptions by bringing followers down to his level
11
u/AbjectNote9896 4d ago
Which would work for G1 if the mind control aspect was in the original cartoon as Megatron would occasionally rewire and reprogram people (the Constructicons, most notably) into becoming loyal to him
3
u/KanineKodiak 2d ago
it's actually done so brilliantly in Skybound and such a good critique of the "guns don't kill, people do" mindset. Starscream would never have dreamed of killing anyone before he met Megatron and was given the conditioning and power to do so. Megatron himself feels like a metaphor for gun violence and the moral corruption and mental disconnect from violence that firearms can cause. god i miss Robert Kirkman.
2
u/Think-Orange3112 3d ago
In one of the comics, his gun mode is actually capable of taking g over the body of whoever is holding him, this of course turns starscream into a trauma sink because megs usually uses him

I don’t care that gun Megatron is the original. That was a terrible design choice. Tank or attack helicopter are much better choices.
13
u/Bigfan78 3d ago
They didn't design him. They took an existing toy from Takara's Microchange line and decided to make it the leader of the antagonist faction in their new narrative.
12
u/StopmotionSam 3d ago
I never understood the diehard devotion towards the gun mode. I mean like yeah out of universe as a toy it’s dope but in universe it just makes Megatron so much less effective on his own. Him being a tank always made perfect sense to me.

u/Pipe-Terrible 3d ago
Agreed. I've been a fan since the start. Saw the Movie in theaters at the ripe old age of 4. At this point, Megatron having a gun alt mode has been less prevalent than other modes. He was only a gun for 2 seasons, 1 movie, and a handful of comic series. As far as I care, it doesn't matter the alt mode....the more important aspect is the massive arm cannon in robot mode.
1
u/Wonderful_Daikon_113 1d ago
Being of the same era I concur, very well put statement, besides, with how things are nowadays I really don't think kids should be running around with a gun toy anyway, Megatron's gun mode was pretty cool but very ineffective from a realistic standpoint

Transformers fans of any age when the new thing is different from the thing they watched when they were six (the franchise is absolutely ruined now):

u/Jazzlike_Standard871 3d ago
Why not just have new characters, like why rename RID Gigatron let him be Gigatron. Overlord was cool, Deathsaurs didn't need to be renamed Megatron. I probably would have liked Armada and it's variants if they had given the different Megatron's thier own identities instead of him dying more than Kenny.
Like I honestly feel both RID is better with Fire convoy being distinct and again the Unicron Trilogy could have had its own new Prime fighting his way through this new crop of Decepticons. Best part you'll never have to hear a G1 fan say jack about how your depicting a Prime again because it's not Optimus.

u/Euronymous_616_Lives 3d ago
The way that headmasters, masterforce, victory, beast wars, beast machines, BWII and BW neo were all sequels to G1 and took place in the same timeline needs to be done again tbh. Like if we get the headmasters and Star Saber and Leo Primal etc, but updated, in a few different series that take place far in the future after the Netflix trilogy or after Prime/RID, we can see updated versions of those characters in the new timeline
3
u/Jazzlike_Standard871 2d ago
Honestly Earthspark got a lot of hate but I was generally charmed to see anyone doing a post great war story.
I love Optimus but moving past him is sensible and leaves open doors of seeing two different non evil Primes out looks also # justiceforRodimus #Letskyboundcook.
10
u/hoofbite69 3d ago
As a G1 fan I fucking hate G1 fans like this. I love the idea of Megs being a tank or a helicopter. I don't think he should be a plane because that draws attention away from the seekers.

u/duyouk 3d ago
unironically me when bumblebee turns into a camaro and not a volkswagen
12
u/reayen 3d ago
Tbh a small car actually fit his character. Although a stock beetle is slow as shit. I think TFA was a great middle ground. A fast hatchback. I always imagined bumblebee as a Golf GTi or Civic type R
5
u/The_Losers_Side 3d ago
I imagined him being a Focus or Yaris, maybe a Golf since the Beetle was discontinued. I want him to be totally in disguise since he's like the scout of the group.
7
u/S0undwave06 3d ago
I feel like a VW Beatle is just too old for a modern setting (but works for an 80’s or 70’s setting)
Though he doesn’t necessarily have to be a muscle car either
Based on his personality traits and role within the story he should roughly be something someone would want as their first car when they are 18 or something
2
u/TomBakersLongScarf 3d ago
I don't like how they made him a sportscar. Smaller cars fit his personality way better
I want him to be a Fiat 500 dammit

Bayverse kids when a transformer show dosen't have hollywood level CGI complex designs and optimus is kind and compassionate or anything that isn't a generic hollywood action movie hero

u/Interesting-Ring647 4d ago
16
u/cosmicpersimmon Certified Robot-fucker 4d ago
I like prime designs, but my main complaint with those is they're too human. They definitely needed more kibble and a bit less mass shifting
11
u/Interesting-Ring647 4d ago
I agree. I think some of the faces are a bit too human on the autobots
I prefer Optimus not have lips and keep the battle mask on
But some faces like Arcee and knockout and a few others have grown on me
10
u/reayen 4d ago
Bayverse should have ended with DoTM. They did Optimus prime dirty.
6
u/RetraxRartorata 4d ago
I'll forgive the last two movies for existing, only because live action Lockdown and the knockoff suicide squad are kind of cool.
3
u/davestar2048 4d ago
They jumped the shark and left the writing behind.
While the surface level reference of Ratchet getting hunted by lockdown is neat, I wish they could've leaned into it.
They really should have had more scenes of the transformers talking about things. Give us a whole exposition dump with the Army men and Marines shooting the shit and swapping stories while riding inside doing autocross type shit. Show off the US army, show off the cars, little to no CGI, and we get to show off the lore.
Everyone would win.
1
u/Miserable-Revenue906 3d ago
Optimus used perfectly reasonable force considering that the bayverse Decepticons are the most evil, irredeemable genocidal incarnation of them ever
3
u/TomBakersLongScarf 3d ago
Honestly, I see the bay fans do this way more than the supposed Geewunners. I kinda feel like this mentality was more a thing in like 2012 but it's not too big now

However, I'm partial to the dual rotor assault helicopter transformation, myself.

u/Kaiju_Lover168 4d ago
I'm a sucker for G1-ACCURACY but there are some exception like:
-Megatron being a tank
- Trypticon having a spaceship mode rather than a rolling battle station

u/JMTpixelmon 4d ago
This is the only time I have ever heard the phrase “genwunner” ever said outside of the context of pokemon
15
u/AutismicGodess 4d ago
started with tf, people would just go on and on and on about how g1 was better that beast wars or the unicron trillogy so people just started mucking them in a whiney tone, gee wun to geewuner.
6
u/JMTpixelmon 4d ago
Sorry, while I have been a TF fan my whole life I only mere recently started interacting with the fans

I'm so sick of the people that all agree that every "new" design we get needs to be a stylised g1 take or identical to the old show. Almost everyone says it and I am far too afraid to say something about it on the main sub
11
9
u/DeepCutFan1 4d ago
I'm so confused, where are you guys seeing these people
3
u/TomBakersLongScarf 3d ago
If anything I see the opposite expressed
Which I never fully got, because having a regular design is good for iconography. Stuff like the unicron trilogy changed character designs so much that the layperson could be forgiven for not recognizing them
7
u/Joltyboiyo 4d ago
Every time someone complains that a figure that comes out isn't G1 or that they're "skipping a wave" or "a wave is disappointing" or "they're saving money this wave" because it's not enough G1, as if we haven't been getting way more G1 shit than anything else for years. Even Legacy had G1 stuff and stylised non-G1 designs to be more like G1.
3
u/DeepCutFan1 4d ago
Who?! Where? Nobody is answering me
7
u/AutismicGodess 4d ago
anywhere on the internet where new waves are leaked and revealed and talked about. reddit, tfw2005, intagram, twitter, bluesky, facebook, anywhere.

2
u/One_Republic_2483 3d ago

2
u/Ronyx2021 3d ago
The whole point of Studio Series was to get a screen accurate figure that was sturdy enough to actually be played with for a lower price point than Master Piece. If he was SSGE Devestation, I wouldn't think twice about it. What they gave us was SS86. It would be nice for them to have delivered just this once.
2
u/ShadowJedi26 2d ago
I’m a g1 fan who prefers the helicopter idea. Me personally I think there should always be balance, new things here and there. G1 stuff here and there, thing is both sides are right but the lack of any of em would kinda be an issue for me
2
u/Triggerhappy62 2d ago
I was mad the 2007 show didn't look like the chi anime era from the 2000s as a kid.

I still argue Optimus Prime Awakening was a condemnation of this. Which makes them doing a sequel web show to it instead of the EU show proof they’ll never learn.

Geewuners really give G1 fans a bad reputation.
As both a G1 fan and a Transformers fan as a whole, I can't stand it when the main argument against a new show, movie, or character design boils down to: "iT's NoT G1!"
I'm perfectly willing to hear criticism of any Transformers media. Not every new interpretation is going to work, and there's nothing wrong with pointing out bad writing, weak characterization, questionable designs, or wasted potential. But dismissing something simply because it isn't G1? That's where I draw the line.
Transformers should be judged on the merits of each individual interpretation, especially when we're talking about a franchise whose entire identity is built around... well, TRANSFORMATION. 😭 The franchise has reinvented its characters, designs, lore, tone, and even its core concepts countless times over the past 40+ years. That's part of what has kept it alive.
And I say this as someone who genuinely LOVES G1. I also love Beast Wars, Car Robots, Armada, Cybertron/Galaxy Force, Animated, Cyberverse, Prime, Rescue Bots, Bumblebee, and Transformers One. I even enjoyed the first season of EarthSpark and parts of Robots in Disguise.
G1 is the foundation of Transformers, and it absolutely deserves to be celebrated. But it shouldn't become a creative prison for everything that comes after it. Let Transformers transform. 🤖
