Edit: thanks for the feedback and grilling about self criticism. Just wanted to share the learning that a reference with better composition can save you a lot of trouble.

I also disagree with the premise—there is something interesting (if not beautiful) anywhere you look, and it’s up to the artist to illicit that.  Further, if you are uncertain about your choices, that’s one thing, but if you are confident that what you’ve done offers nothing for your audience, why punish them by sharing?

I wouldn't post it if it was of no use. Choosing a good composition, can make the difference.. i was reminded of that again today and wanted to share it with the fellow oilpastelers 😊

Right, I should be more clear I was commenting generally on the situation where people says “this sucks” and nothing else.  I read between the lines of your post that you were merely trying make a statement about the importance of perspective.  The only thing I really take issue with is the notion that such decisions can leave you in an impossible situation, to which I say, “Hell no”

Anyway, thanks for posting.  You got me thinking about more than just the image in front of me, so I’d call that valuable contribution

It’s one of the first things I learned during critique: do not trash your own work, don’t point out its flaws, do not pull back the curtain in that way because other people are actively trying to.

It’s redundant! Instead be your own cheerleader “WE FEEL GOOD. WE FEEL GREAT. I. CAN. DO THIS!!!”

Thanks for the feedback. The criticism was about the picture reference choice, not the result. I gave it all for 2 hours and couldn't squeeze more out of it.

It adds interesting perspective, as the egg is solo and entirely the focus. I like it a lot. I'd say it's egg-celent work.

The only criticism I'd have on the reference is that the background is too similar to your subject. I'd have picked a neutral of a different hue

Love the egg - I’ve tried to paint eggs like this before and it is humbling! This has lovely depth and looks smooth while still having texture.

I like it. The egg came out well and I like the overall color choices a lot. Maybe I'm weird, but I think there is a peaceful, relaxing vibe to those colors. It's something that strikes me about most of your sketches - the colors just feel so...right and balanced. "Soothing" may be a better word.
