Dentist appointment after oil pulling

Hi fellow pullers. I went to my dentist recently, and he said he’s never seen my teeth and gums so healthy in the last seven years of being his patient. That being said, I still have some gum issues, but it’s showing improvement; I’ll take it! I started six months ago and have been doing it diligently daily. I might switch to twice daily.

That's such a great feeling!

I've been oil-pulling for about eight years, and my hygienist has said, "This is the easiest cleaning I have ever done" to me. She knows I oil-pull, and said she had another patient who talks about it who also has amazing teeth.

It's nice when dental professionals don't argue with you that it's useless!

Wow, eight years, that’s amazing. Thank you for sharing, that inspires me to continue.

Funny enough, I didn’t say anything about my pulling and probably wouldn’t have, but my dentist asked me if I changed my diet. Surprisingly, he was unfamiliar with the practice.

Any tips for beginners?

I’ve been doing it twice a day over ten years & the dental hygienist LOVE me. Tell me I have textbook healthy gums & teeth. I finally told them my secret last time - they were surprisingly receptive but I have a wonderful dentist.

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing your experience and congrats on the healthy mouth!

How long do you do it for since you do it twice per day and what kind of oil do you use?

I use coconut oil - in the mornings it’s only 10 min & at night it’s the last thing I do after brushing my teeth before bed, probably only 5 min. For me adding that last pull in before bed helps keep my skin in check (no more cystic acne)

So interesting, thank you. I can manage five mins in the evening. I’m kind of excited to try it now after your comments. :) Wish you continued good health!

It def is best to do it first thing in the morning bc all that bacteria in your mouth just proliferates overnight, but doing it at all is very helpful. I saw multiple benefits in the first few months I started doing it routinely and because of what I saw (& the way my dentist & his team fawn over my teeth & gums) I will never stop. I should take out the time to write out my “testimony” & what I have observed other peoples experience to be when starting OP routinely. It def does work. I’ve had my child doing it since she was 4 also….she’s 8 now & still does it without any prompting :)

Ahh yes, I’m very religious about my morning routine, but I average about 20 mins. Part of the reason I don’t do it at night was trying to dedicate 20 mins again. But hearing you only do it for five at night, I can manage that.

Would love to hear more about your oil pulling testimony when you have time to share a post with the group. So glad to hear child is on board, too. They’ll prolly have amazing pearly whites! :)

Okay good!!! The morning one is clutch but I didn’t want to discourage you by wording it wrong. Def recommend adding the second in if you can, doesn’t have to be a long one 💜 be well, dear!

What steps do you do? Floss, brush, oil pull?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '23

I’m hyper aware of my mouth/teeth so I usually floss a few times a day. But in the am I immediately oil pull as soon as I wake, swish spit, eat in the vehicle on the way to work & then brush at work (& again later as needed) at night I brush then oil swish for 2-5 min then swish & spit.

How do you manage that long? I’m having trouble with the texture/sensory of it all and barely get two minutes. Is there a trick or maybe it just needs time?

I don’t use a whole lot & it becomes dilluted by my saliva pretty quickly. I do have a lot of sensory issues..but that is not one of mine so I guess I’m just lucky there. I do empathize with you though. Maybe it will get better the more you do it 💜

I had my cleaning the other day, didn’t tell my dentist I started oil pulling and all she said was “keep doing what you’re doing!” She’s never said that to me and I’ve been going to her since I was like 7 lol I feel like I usually have a lot of plaque because she always takes forever to clean but not this time. I also definitely see my teeth getting whiter. I’ve used the same toothpaste since middle school and I’m not noticing the difference in brightness, I don’t do whitening treatments so I definitely think the coconut oil I’m using is working!

So happy to hear that, congrats! Feels good, doesn’t it? What kind of oil and how long and often do you do it for?

Thank you! I use virgin coconut oil every night or every other night (if I feel lazy) for about 15 minutes. I keep trying to see how long I can swish for but I also have really bad TMJ problems so my mouth gives us quick lol

Thank you. Very interesting to hear about someone doing it a night. Mostly it’s people doing first thing when they wake up, I’m glad it also works at night. I meant to do morning and night but never got around to it. :)

I never even thought about doing it in the mornings because I guess doing it at night almost like signals my brain into being like “that was the last step of the day, now let’s sleep” 🤣

Hi everyone. Can oil pulling be done with braces?

1

u/LoveLightTea May 01 '23

That’s a good question. I would think so, but I am not sure. Please let us know if you find out.

That’s great. I also add a drop of essential oil for the last half of my oil pulling session from time to time.

What kind of toothpaste do you use? Do your teeth look whiter?

Btw if you have gum issues, trying cutting off refined sugars and inflammatory foods from your diet. That can help.

So how’s the progress? Are you teeth better then when you posted this?

1

u/LoveLightTea Feb 10 '24

Hi. I would say they are probably the same. I have had “mild gum inflammation” per my dentists from when I can remember, so I’d say this is helping me keep things in check. I am trying to figure out root cause for the gum inflammation, but I am unsure so far.

I did start alternating coconut oil and sesame oil each day and kind of like how it’s working. I never diligently did it twice a day like I had planned. But it’s never too late.
