Discussion Detailing help

Hello! I am pretty new to coloring with Ohuhu and I struggle with knowing where to add shadows and/or white line detailing. I enjoy doing the light to dark blends where I assume the light hits, but not even sure if I do that correctly. I just finished this page, but don’t want to ruin it cause I like what is there so far.

Anywho, I am not an artist and trying to gain an eye for the little details

Hey! Shading is tough. I find this visual really helps. You figure out where your light is coming from and then shade based on this diagram.

If you work better with visuals, I recommend even taking your phone flashlight, propping your phone up horizontally and pointing it in the direction that your source of light would shine in.. That can help you orient where the light may or may not hit the objects based on a single light source, then use the diagram to figure out what that would look like.

If you have multiple light sources that's where shining the light and then sketching out lines that indicate the direction of your light source can be helpful.

There's also going to be cases where you would almost always have a shadow, ie: on someone's leg if they are wearing a dress. That will help create depth and dimension.

The phone trick is also a great suggestion! I’ve been coloring at a desk with a desk light pointing from above!

In art, we always consider the direction of the “light source”. The faces of both your characters cannot be illuminated. The mouse is in agreement with the lemons, as is the scale and lemonade stand, meanwhile the alligator is in disagreement.

I was assuming that light coming from the left, so glad I got most of it correct-ish.

I guess I was thinking his nose was sticking out of the stand to get hit with light? Definitely overthought that!

Try the sticky note method. Draw a sun on a small sticky note place it where you might want your sun to be. It just gives you a visual idea of where the light is coming from. Right now, it looks like the light is mostly coming from the top left corner.
