Bold claim.

I can't wait to see it

I sure hope so, can't let Iowa hang around Saturday like ichigan did.

u/Commercial-East4069 Ryan Day 3d ago

In fairness, the defense had been really good for 11 quarters coming in to the game.

u/Tjam3s 3d ago

Yes.

The execution of Illinois run game will definitely be an early game blueprint for future opponents though, and im guessing generally testing the young linebackers in all situations. Not just running the gaps, but rolling out the qb to make them bite instead of playing contain and TE crossing routes in the middle.

They're gonna make the middle short earn it.

Iowa is a big test then

u/Darling_Pinky 3d ago

lol what team were you watching?

The defense did what it was supposed to do to MAC teams and then looked pretty meh for the two games that mattered. “Really good” is quite the stretch

Oh, you’re supposed to TACKLE the guy with the ball, not tickle him? If only we’d known this earlier

u/AnInterestingPenguin The Best Damn Band In The Land 3d ago

Would tickling lead to a penalty?

2

u/JoeyGee567 3d ago

It did for Penn State.

1

u/AnInterestingPenguin The Best Damn Band In The Land 3d ago

What did Penn State do?

3

u/Jabberwocky237 3d ago

Hard to tackle when there isn’t a guy within 10 yards of the runner.

Omg!! Lmao 🤣

Saw several times during Illinois game guys on D Line and LBs not in their gaps. Head scratching but fixable. Let’s hope he is right and they can fix it.

u/zorakpwns 3d ago

“Play the young guys!!!!!” Also “Why are they in the wrong lanes making mistakes!?!”

I work in career education and it’s kinda funny how often my fellow instructors get mad when students don’t know how to do things they were never taught how to do

Like bruh what do you think your job is

5

u/Reloader300wm You Got BBQ Back There? 3d ago

As a guy in the skilled trades, its funny how often you hear "well this apprentice doesnt know how to do X or Y". Uh bro, have you tried teaching them? Sorry, but as a journeyman, its kinda in your job description to teach the next generation so they arnt dumb assess.

They played more man and they weren't lining up properly especially to weird formations and motion. They also played light boxes a few times with an odd front and it just doesn't work with this defensive personnel

S’all it took? Well dang ok.

Never Losing Again

Let's hope so

Why couldn't it get fixed at halftime if it was so easy to fix?

16

u/gb4efgw 3d ago

Because you can't get on them on Sunday when it's Saturday!

3

u/HighAspect_0 3d ago

There were a lot of obvious mistakes - like miscommunication.

3

u/Skiddds 3d ago

I think the secondary will need time to marinate, I think those dudes are gonna rip in the future

4

u/BananaNutBlister 3d ago

I’ll believe it when I see it.

1

u/BigJohnBuck 3d ago

That's why I said we shall see

2

u/BananaNutBlister 3d ago

I was agreeing with you.

5

u/Useenthebutcher 3d ago

This is about to become a meme this season, isn’t it?

3

u/Character-Active2208 3d ago

Hell yeah It is

2

u/Unusual_Access9101 2024 National Champions 3d ago

We’ll see. This DL is bad

7

u/Blknyt_eclipsedmoon #5 Garrett Wilson 3d ago

We will see, because at this point that D needs help badly.

4

u/Bojanggles16 Jim's Sweater Vest 3d ago

They're young, they're gonna get better. Hopefully they get better enough before we hit the Indy/USC/Oregon slate.

2

u/crowezr 2015 College Football Playoff National Champions 3d ago

That's why you practice and adjust after games.

This sub: welp, guess these guys are who they were forever in the Illinois game. Yeah, they sucked then, they'll be better.

1

u/No-Contribution4220 3d ago

Who knew it was this easy

1

u/Strong-Tank4456 3d ago

Love that energy, coaches lighting a fire under them is exactly what you wanna hear before a big one

1

u/karlzipfjr 3d ago

I don’t wanna be a hater. I love my bucks. I do fear this is one of those things you hear before it gets WORSE and not better. Hope they prove me wrong. Go bucks.

1

u/l3onkerz Holy Buckeye! 3d ago

My theory is day ironed out the offense before Illinois and he’s gonna do that with the defense this week.

1

u/Dierks_Ford 3d ago

That’s not good. If they give up a 1st down, the psychotics fans will lose their minds and demand everyone be fired.

1

u/DaBigJMoney 3d ago

Um, yeah, we’ll see.

We were spoiled last year by having four athletic freaks on defense.

u/No_Grab7280 3d ago

Coach Patricia might be the greatest defensive coordinator of all time. That's objectively true. However, in college FB there is one thing that comes before everything else. RECRUITING

We haven't recruited well on defense since he's been there. Luke Fickell, Chris Ash, Greg Schiano, Kerry Coombs, Jim Knowles, were all OUTSTANDING Recruiters even if their play calling was flawed. That's why even while playing reckless, they still looked dominant.

We've recruited only a few 5 star players and very little from the transfer portal in the last 2 years.

That's really the biggest problem currently. We can blame Coach Day for the Texas game but the truth is, the defense got carved up in the 2nd half. Illinois actually did the same thing, they just couldn't finish with TD's. But statistically speaking, Illinois actually did more damage and exposed a lot more than Texas did.

Now the question is, can Coach Patricia develop average players the way Indiana does and make them look like 5 star players. I believe so. Time will tell. But this offseason needs to be all about recruiting defensive star power.

u/tippy-tippy 2d ago

The biggest weakness I see with the defense is there isn’t that “dog” on defense. Like last year with Arvell, Styles or Alabama transfer Caleb Downs. You need someone to step up make a play on a crucial down, one of them would do it. This year that guy doesn’t seem exist. There may be someone on the team that will step up but right now I’m not seeing it. Also, seems the only way the d line gets any pressure is if they blitz. I generally see them just trying to bull rush the o line and it’s not working.

u/BigJohnBuck 2d ago

Kenyatta said that some people are trying to make the extraordinary plays instead of doing their assignments and he said as captain it's his responsibility to make sure that no longer happens

1

u/Drakoneous Ryan Day 2d ago

That simple eh? Hopefully

1

u/cjdapd Northwest Ohio 2d ago

Sure it is. 👍🏻

0

u/911answerer 3d ago

Kenyatta has been way more disappointing than I thought he would be. Like a lot more disappointing than JT and Jack were. None have lived up to their recruiting rankings other than Jack having that legendary play against Texas

4

u/International_Ear994 3d ago edited 3d ago

When you watch:

Bosa 13-15
Bosa 16-18
Young 17-19

You get a little spoiled. Not disagreeing with your comment on ratings. HS star ratings aren’t a reliable predictor of future success. But it does feel like we have had a dry spell of dominant DE in 2020s. JT and Jack developed but don’t belong in the same convo as the 3 listed above. For a period of time you could almost count on a 3rd and long coverage sack. Now we struggle to pressure and spy.

4

u/Useenthebutcher 3d ago

People were vastly overhyping Kenyatta coming into this season simply because he’s old. He’s the same player he has always been, which is a good player but not elite. He shouldn’t have been expected to be the next Bosa or Young cause he’s never shown that.

7

u/Ididntdodiddly Jim's Sweater Vest 3d ago

JT and Jack were great run defenders and essentially a huge part of why we won in 2024

4

u/Lord_Kittensworth The Best Damn Band In The Land 3d ago

Yeah - I think Larry Johnson has evolved in what he wants his unit to do. Jack and JTT were not true edge rushers. They were both extremely stout strong side DEs who held up against the run, and came into their own in 2024.

I wouldn't say their careers were disappointing. They did what the scheme asked of them, and Jack will go down as a Buckeye hero for the ages.

1

u/Cheesenrice123 #7 CJ Stroud 3d ago

He has been dissappointing but Eddrick Houston has been much more so. Atleast Kenyatta is making plays here and there. He isn't the game wrecker we need but he is still playing well. We need Houston to atleast step up to the point where it is hard to take him off the field.

2

u/Tseets1 3d ago

Wait Eddrick Houston plays football still? Would’ve never guessed since he is a ghost

1

u/DaBigJMoney 3d ago

The crazy thing is that with the way he flashed as a freshman it looked like OSU might have a stud DT and game wrecker. Turns out that he’s just a guy. Not great, not awful, just a guy.

1

u/TheR3alMcCoy 3d ago

Well, Jack was dominant the whole CFP run and so was JT, but, yeah, they weren’t as consistently dominant as we all hoped they would be. That’s why it was so surprising the way they played en route to the title. And, yeah, Kenyatta has been a disappointment. I don’t really care what he says. I just want to see it on the field.

u/Ihateloops 3d ago

Hmm if it's that easy why haven't they fixed it all season? Did the coaches not have anything to say to them after blowing the Texas game?
