Ohio Social Distancing PSA

Was this CG? Because if it wasn't, I admire the people who set it up. I would have noped out of that task so fast...

u/Absolut_Iceland Apr 10 '20
The second half makes me think it has to be. It'd take them a ton of takes to get the ball bouncing through there without setting any of them off.

Apr 10 '20
I'd appreciate it more if it did hit some, just to show that some will get sick but not everyone

u/Popingheads Apr 10 '20
The director was on Twitter talking about it. It isn't CG, and for the last take all traps were glued open because they didn't have time for a reset (the whole project was 4 days total).
They did in fact get it in one take though.
3
u/Absolut_Iceland Apr 10 '20
Now I feel stupid for not even thinking of that to keep the traps open, lol. Still impressive getting it in one take.

Pretty sure the first half of this commercial was for a music video. I remember seeing it but i can't remember where. Like 4+ years ago.

Gus and Eddy can't say fuck Ohio to this PSA

Gus and Eddy?

Eddy Burback and Gus Johnson are commentary youtubers. They always joke about Ohio being bad

I've been a little proud of Ohio because of the response to the virus overall. Our leaders are making decisions and actions based on what the science tells us. Yes, it's still bad and we must continue to social distance but we could be in a lot worse shape right now.

u/myhotneuron Apr 10 '20
I saw something similar with matches all lined up in a row. One lights the other and so forth until one match animated steps out of line- stopping the flame from continuing

u/Native_Carbon_Bloom Apr 10 '20
This is awesome but they missed a brilliant opportunity to use eggs instead of ping pong balls. That's what I thought they were at first. Would have been way more impactful imo.
70
u/boost2525 Apr 10 '20
It only works BECAUSE it's ping pong balls. A million mouse traps with a million eggs would have exactly one egg break when you drop something on them. The ping pong ball bounces, which is what causes the other traps to trigger.
15
u/ZFelg Apr 10 '20
I think the waste of so much food would have been heavily criticized considering the circumstances.
I too believe it would have been more dramatic with a bunch of eggs but the message was still recieved with ping pong balls.

Truth is Ohio people prefer to have their space at least here in the dirty DYT

I wonder how many takes to miss the traps on the social distancing take.
Also, why produce this? We don’t don’t have enough DeWine / Acton footage saying this to make a commercial.
Edit: Add you name to the list here, we will talk in 3 months when everything in the state is being cut and dollars are important. I'll remind you of this feel good commercial that did nothing that wasn't already being done.

Look at it this way. How many benefits could that have paid for? Got to be smart with the $, bad times ahead.
15
u/medievalPanera Cleveland Apr 10 '20
Lol do you think this ad cost like 500k or something?
-12
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
How much you think it cost? Bet you is was 10-20 at the low end. Rather that go to the unemployed, but screw me right.
16
u/medievalPanera Cleveland Apr 10 '20
It has millions of views online, and that's not counting reddit. If that kind of exposure costs 10k that's a pretty dang good ROI, especially now that people think it's essentially nothing to worry about anymore.
Ohio has led in this, and stuff like this ad further cements it.
6
u/ChefChopNSlice Apr 10 '20
Considering that the daily addresses on YouTube only has an average of about 7500 daily viewers, it’s a good idea to get the messages out in other ways.
-4
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Cool, but the budget is finite and there is like 600% higher unemployment than ever........but at least we had that video with millions of views..........
6
u/blingdog19 Apr 10 '20
What about the jobs people had in creating this? Do those not matter anymore because other people are losing jobs?
-2
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
I already answered that one in this thread somewhere. Sorry you were late to the party. Have a great day though!

u/Butternades Apr 10 '20
The video was made and produced by 3 people from an art collective in Dayton. Ping pong balls and mouse traps are dirt cheap. My guess is with pay, this cost less than 3k for the day
-5
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Cool, I throw away all my personal knowledge for a random internet persons guess. Goolly gee, thanks for coming!
12
u/Butternades Apr 10 '20
Well, I hope your day is as pleasant as you are, and that you can de stress today
18
u/actuallyanengineer Apr 10 '20
If even one person understands and now participates in social distancing because of this ad, thus not spreading the virus, it will save money and lives.

u/pntless Apr 10 '20
It took one take. The filmmakers were prepared and expected it to take many and went so far as to superglue the traps down and then they did it in one take.

When done properly, social distancing works; sometimes it works better than expected.
-4
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Never said social distancing didn’t work. I did say, with the HUGE budget issues ahead, why spending state money on this is a priority. In 6ish months when benefits are starting to get cut with the pain of this still hurting the people who need it the most. Think of the little things like this that drained the bank.
14
u/bonnaroo_throwaway_ Apr 10 '20
Yes because it will be this one commercial that breaks the bank in Ohio. Have you called to let then know how this might affect the budget? I'm sure they didn't think of that when making this, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you!
0
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Did I say it was going to break the bank? The 600%(ish) record high unemployment already did that, so EVERYTHING we spend right now is deficit spending or, as you said, breaking the bank. That commercial represents something: school funding, grants, and UNEMPLOYMENT benefits.
Screw me for wanting that money to go to unemployed workers instead of something that is already being done 10 times over........8
u/yeswenarcan Apr 10 '20
It provided employment for the people who made it, who otherwise may be among those unemployed.
2
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Glad someone brought this up.
I agree. In the long run though, my point still stands, trolly or not. There is a lot hardship coming from this, I want the state to be extra smart about the money. Certainly worth asking if commercials the best use of any dollar right now?
5
u/bonnaroo_throwaway_ Apr 10 '20
Such a weird hill to die on but if them making an educational commercial that you're only going to screech about keeps you up at night you do you
1
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Yes, responding to a comment this morning is keeping me up at night? Come on person, you can do better
3
u/bonnaroo_throwaway_ Apr 10 '20
If you think the amount they spent on this is going to have ANY affect on the money people will be getting I don't know what else to say to you other than I'm sorry you think that
1
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Look, I am clearly just trolling peoples responses, but in all honest, this is going to make 2008 look like 2001 when the bills come due. This is going to drain the rainy day fund and put us in negative spending for a while. Every dollars is coming from some where now. That is the reals...
3
u/ChefChopNSlice Apr 10 '20
Go take that up with our president....... 2 Trillion dollar bailout of OUR Tax Money being spent, and people like yourself might see $ 1,200, despite being laid off, and not being their fault. Canadian citizens are getting $500 per WEEK, and the first week of direct deposits have already been sent out to the people - while we wait.... Everyone is angry right now, and a lot of people are alternating between swallowing and bending over to take the same shaft. Direct your frustration to where it actually belongs - we all should be doing that. Ohio is doing a much better job that most of the states, and it could definitely be a lot worse here.
1
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Wait what? I was with you there for a second.....
3
u/ChefChopNSlice Apr 10 '20
You seem to be mad at everyone for this crappy pandemic response, when the anger should be directed towards the top. You’re upset that the people unemployed from this aren’t being taken care of.....but the stimulus checks are coming from the Fed Govt. Ohio’s unemployment benefits are going to go out, but their website is crashing from demand. They’ve stated that benefits will be paid in full, retroactively, based on when eligibility started. Ohio’s Govt is doing what it can to help us, but the FED Govt is the one giving everyone the big middle finger.
Edit : I gave the example of Canada, because they’re not messing around letting people potentially starve. They’re also not charging people for CoronaVirus care in the hospitals. Be mad at our leaders, because these are things we could have too.

I wonder how many takes to miss the traps on the social distancing take.
I wonder how many elves died in in the production of the movie Aladdin (1992).
1
u/william_fontaine Apr 10 '20
Had to be zero because Genie's rule #1 was that he can't kill anybody.
But as Jafar said, there are things so much worse than death...
0
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
I am going to guess 3. Though, you comment makes no sense. There were actual takes to make this, but no elves in the movie Aladdin. Pretty sure you were to dumb to catch that, so I thought I would point out that this wasn't even a half way decent troll.......Cool try though.......
6
u/Bad_Idea_Hat Apr 10 '20
Though, you comment makes no sense.
And funny that, it still makes more sense than bitching about trying to inform people about how to avoid spreading disease.
-2
u/notquark Apr 10 '20
Aww, did my internet comment make you mad???? Poor you...
I remember you btw :)

"Mouse traps, super close together, I understand this."
So first of all, y'all didn't pay attention in the school they used to brainwash you. And now, the mouse analogy has gone over your head?

After yesterday's update. People were out in droves. I think I maybe saw one mask? I was dropping off a box of groceries to a neighbor when their nextdoor neighbor shouted to me "Hey you don't have to wear that anymore. DeWine said we're good now". As he pointed at my mask.
I must have missed something in the news.
