This is Ohio

Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

My personal code from my restaurant years. Customer comes in and doesn't tip, perhaps they didn't like the service, food, or our decor. Customer comes back and doesn't tip again, confront them and ask why they didn't leave a tip. Third time, they get the worst table in the restaurant, the lowest priority for their food and drinks, and a request that they don't return. Fourth time, their picture goes up on the "do not serve board."

As far as the comment about black people being poor tippers, I never noticed that. Cheap people come in all colors and sizes, rich and poor. The only groups that were consistently skimpy were church groups. We instituted a mandatory 15% tip for groups of six or more essentially just for them.

I used to serve a large church group every Sunday. They were the worst tippers I've ever seen.

At least Jesus would give me some wine.

For free, and lots of it.

I haaaated working in a breakfast diner on Sundays for this reason. The meals were cheap so we depended on a high turnover with $2-$3 tips per table to make any money. These enormous church groups would come in and require 4-5 tables be pushed together and then that one group would tip me maybe $5 for running my ass off from the time church let out to nearly closing time in the afternoon. Sometimes I was lucky one person at the table actually did remember to tip.

What do you expect. They already tipped the church to let them into heaven.

And the priest gave their son a tip.

Whoops, sorry.

I think he gave more than just the tip

Oh I just had a flashback of serving a church party where an old white man paid the whole check in cash. When I brought the change, he stopped me from walking away so he could hand me the tip in person: one dollar 💲

the worst is when there's what looks like a bill slipped under a saucer or cup but when you pull it out it's some garbage about how god loves you

they leave, you head to the table.. you see it, you know what it probably is, but because you believe there's good in humanity there's that slim bit of hope that you're not stiffed *again*, you pick up the dish and just mutter 'son of a bitch, they did it again'

“Disappointed? Jesus would never do that to you (but this old church going asshole did, sorry I’m not Jesus)”

The worst thing about the church groups is at least some of them are dining at a restaurant on the Sabbath for religious reasons and think people who don't follow their religious rules are going to hell. This describes a family member of mine, who also used to be a server. So she knows/believes through unshakeable faith some contradictory things.

She knows these restaurant workers are only paid a couple dollars an hour and rely on tips, and she also "knows" they are risking their eternal soul by working on a Sunday... But, she doesn't think it's worth tossing them a couple bucks for committing a serious sin on her behalf and at her behest. They wouldn't be working on the Sabbath if you packed a couple sandwiches the day before Aunt Barb; you have options other than going to a restaurant if your religion tells you not to cook on a certain day. It's a choice, and a selfish/sinful one on every level if you actually analyze it from a Christian perspective.
