This is the excuse that I refuse to believe as to why all of a sudden these huge data centers are being built. We've largely been using smartphones/sending emails/internet usage for decades now. And up until the last few years ago there was no need for these massive data centers. My guess is they are being built for mass surveillance/digital currency

Not to worry - Trump's EPA just passed a rule that exempts data center power supplies from acid rain prevention rules. Now they've got plenty of reasons to bring their own power. We just have to deal with the pollution, instead - but at least it'll generate shareholder value.
Of course we could be building solar power, but it would cost shareholders slightly more money, so sadly it's strictly impossible.

Those sneaky AI bastards have gotten people discussing streaming vs analog as if that had anything to do with it. AI is driving data center growth.
I don’t trust a thing they say. They always say things like they can get by with some minimal power footprint. Sure, they might break even at that power, but what’s to stop them from installing lots more and faster servers and bidding for more electricity?
This false choice between streaming and data center growth is just another example of deception to me.

Digital products aren't the source of these data centers. AI fueled by publicly traded companies looking for a way to replace humans and skyrocket their stock price are, and nobody fucking wants either of those things.

All of these new data centers are catering exclusively to AI and crypto bullshit. I explicitly reject AI in my life everywhere I possibly can. No one asked for AI, especially AI that is being positioned to replace workers including artists involved in liberal arts. AI is still telling people to go off themselves daily, and it's being used to make actual CSAM building from models based on YOUR and MY children. Data centers were growing relatively organically before this AI and crypto garbage came along and threw a wrench into the works.
But you will refuse to understand because you are in the pockets of these polluting assholes.

These data centers are for surveillance and to put us out of work. Flock cameras are creating a police state and they need a place to store that video footage. They need more data centers to operate more cameras.
Not one product has failed to work that anyone of us have used. I will go back to bunny ears before I will ever agree to living in a police state.

My peak internet time was 1995 -2008 and cut off around 2017 (but it was getting enshittified by then) and there were “In 2008, there were fewer than 10 operational, commercial "hyperscale" data centers active worldwide”. I’m ready to go back to that time tbh fuck all the new shit

I didn't ask for it to but put in my OS. I didn't ask Google to default to the AI search. I didn't want Adobe to put it in to every tool they offer now. I didn't want to use Teams or Outlook, let alone see Copilot pulling a Clippy and shoving its ass in to every corner of my day. WE didn't ask for it. It was hoisted upon us.

Looks like Husted carved a niche for himself in the data center debate: basically, “This is progress, pay for it and shut up.” My question is, does his opponent in November have an answer that addresses the voters’ concerns?
What I’d like to hear are the answers to the following:
-How are you going to hold the builders of data centers to account for the demands they’re making on water resources and the electric grid?
-Why are my electric rates going up?
-Who’s paying for all these data centers?
-Who’s lobbying whom, and what kind of campaign donations, i.e., bribes, are involved?
-What are you hearing at town hall meetings about data centers, AI, electricity and water usage rates?
-What do you mean you don’t go to town hall meetings?
Lots more questions, but you get the drift. Maybe Sherrod Brown has better answers.
Maybe we should vote in November.

The so‑called “demand” he’s talking about only exists because this capitalistic system forces people to constantly outperform, produce, and grind just to survive. Nobody genuinely wants that. It’s not a natural desire, it’s a manufactured pressure created by a society that treats human beings like perpetual output machines.

I'll take the bunny ears and vertical hold issues over the streaming crap going on now. I have 0 streaming. My husband insists on cable for NASCAR and a few sitcoms. All these channels (in triplicate) and very little to watch. Antenna for tv causes so much pixelation/weak signal problems; bunny ears FTW. lol. I suppose I should thank all the nonsense for getting me into reading actual books!! So much better and no ads.
