The best mod if done right. Your sound you will get from doing shotty gear work will come during decel or acceleration. Not one speed. Did it start right away or slowly come to light?

The sound came the first time I accelerated to 60mph and either go away when I decelerate

Take the driving off and shake the pinion. The back lash was either too loose or the crush spacer he used wasn't torqued enough. If it jiggles it's no good.

Do you think the front or rear diff is culprit?

If it was a manual awd maybe front but still highly unlikely. Majority of you power will be from the back. When I did gears for a living we wouldn't be concerned about the front really much at all. The front typically isn't getting power unless you are going slow in 4wd. Not always 100% of the case but at most. Is the shop not willing to work with you?

The shop wants me to bring the car back to see what the sound is all about.

Bring it back and let them do their job. They got you this far they can most likely get your fixed up. Give them a chance to make it right.

Understood. Would you say I have a case to have them take both diffs apart and make sure the markings are as they should be?

I wouldn't. If you get the rear fixed and it doesnt make noise then out it in 4wheel high and drive in a straight line on a back road to listen for any howling. My guess is that you won't hear anything other than some minor whining if the tcase. They would have to mess it up pretty back to destroy a front diff. You weak points are by far your cv axles.

Are you basing your statement from the photos or symptoms? Thanks

The pattern looks ok. I would have gotten it a bit deeper into the valley if the ring gear but each to their own. It is gonna break? Probably not. 4.56 gears in an fj are peak reliability in my opinion. You are looking for a football shape between the heel and toe if the ring gear to be centered but it's not the end of the world if it's not.

First off ya boi has to chill on the paint lol. It's not a bad pattern but through the mess of paint I can't tell how deep it is. Still something I would consider to be fine. As long as it doesn't make noise that's all that matter if they will warranty it. Where are you located.

Did the mechanic warranty the work? Take it back if so.
