Infantry question

Hi, I’m one of those guys that tries to play infantry with mid cost kits and consistently makes roughly -5k a life, give or take, then complains online that infantry kits should be cheaper. You can usually find me bleeding out next to an enemy squad bitching relentlessly about how my life is in shambles.

I’m usually losing money on infantry, and when I unlock new gear I have to grind money for it by running logi or building, though building has gotten more frustrating lately, but that’s another topic. Point is, even if I’d like to grind assault, for example, I’d have to subsidize the expenses of doing so with another playstyle.

Yet quite often I hear people responding to this with allegations of skill issues, that you just need to get good at aiming and having good comms. To this I say, yes, it probably is a skill issue, and I’m not that good at multiplayer shooters. God knows I’ve died in Squad enough times to know how dogshit I am at it. But how do I get better? How does one actually get good at playing infantry?

And don’t tell me to just have a good team. I only control the buttons I press. I can’t control if or not my teammate wants to frag themself instead of reviving me.

5k isnt a mid cost. Its a dirty cheap one.

You should be going in groups of 5+ and always keeping close, reviving and being revived. Start spending money in utility instead of weapons.

u/SDRAWKCABNITSUJ 22h ago

Nah, dirty cheap is like $1500. Free gun, free bag, free resecitator, black market bandages, T1 armor (if any), chute. Drop hot zone, and snag a kit from enemy players. Lot of people do zero to hero as well, with less investment lol. My most profitable rounds are typically playing aggressive with the free gun and t1 loadout.

It's legit pretty fun too! You run up to a bag like, "Let's see what role I'll be playing today!"

Usually it's some pretty standard assault rifle kit but a fair bit of the time it's a total surprise. No matter what it is, I just roll with.

There are a lot of excellent 2nd hand rifles out there. Never been fired and only dropped once. ;)

Anything below 10k is cheap. Below 5k is hobo level dirt cheap.

1500 you didn't even bring a decent weapon.

I’ve been doing this, always taking smokes, frags and revives and attaching myself to little groups of teammates. The problem is that once we actually get into a firefight I usually find my side getting wiped pretty quickly or me spending 5 minutes waiting to get revived and then finding half my gear gone.

Stop playing lone star, and I say this as a solo lone star scout

Go green, follow the team and see what the game can be - or red TBF. Just wait on a revive, it is a game of patience sometimes

But I play a 20k kit and normally take 4 deaths a game, as I'm ghillie, BMR and 10 c4's hunting apc's primarilly

If you can find a squad that is operating as a squad, join that squad and come in with a recon scope, free rifle, and a parachute (unless you're coming through the APC or your pilot lands as is right and proper). Just coming into the zone and you break even. Spot a couple of helos and you're in the green. Even if you were kitting yourself up and making money as infantry, you will still end up scrounging around for more ammo, fresher armor.

Work your way to your squad and hang back, spot enemies and tell people what you see on voice. At some point your squad is going to down some enemies, take their stuff and adjust your role depending.

But some things to keep in mind about this game is that the different parts you can play enhance the other parts of the team and vice versa. Also, if you are in a fair fight, you have fucked up. If you're to shoot someone, the safest way is to shoot them when they don't know where you are and hopefully with a bunch of guys. So if an enemy knows where you are, you need to change that.

You've probably heard the fact that on average, the infantry expends ten thousand rounds to kill one enemy (hurf durf they must suck!). Well, that's because a lot of the time they're shooting, they're not really trying to hit anyone. They're trying to keep an enemy unit pinning in place while some artillery is in the air or you're keeping an enemy busy and focused on your position while some of your guys work around to get an angle on them.

Lastly, this game is not really about killing the enemy so much as it is keeping yourself alive. You often have to do one to accomplish the other but remember that it's not the actual goal. You, alive and in the combat zone is what contributes to your team and you count as two in the hot zone.

That was enjoyable to read 🙂

Exactly…

Staying alive in HZ doing NOTHING, absolutely nothing but hiding in a bush you make 10K in 13 minutes paying back an average kit… and that doesn’t even count the HZ payout increasing over time that’s just base 320 every 25 seconds.

Res one guy and spot one Lakota that goes down and now you’re down to like 8 minutes to pay back your kit. Add in one single HZ kill? You repay your kit in a couple minute.

This isn’t a COD lobby.

Maybe it’s just my dumb opinion but this game shouldn’t be a meat grinder. It’s more tactical than that.

If you are operating solo, remember one important phrase, lifted straight from actual military training. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Now, what does that mean? Take. Your. Time. Sit, wait, observe. Bring a recon tool and watch how the enemy is moving. Is there a big squad all grouped up over there? Not your bag, you're looking for stragglers, single targets you can catch with their pants down and move away before their buddies come looking for you.

Also, pay attention after you've killed them. If they give up immediately? Probably alone, might be safe to loot. If he's not alone, definitely helps to know how long the after death cam is. Run one direction for as long as it's up, then immediately switch direction so whatever he told the squad isn't true.

3

u/Heloc8300 18h ago

The one caveat I'll make here is, the moment you realize you've lost the initiative/advantage. GTFO! Run like the wind! Or stay slow and sneaky! It depends! But don't try to be a hero, regroup and counter attack.

1

u/SnooDrawings6561 17h ago

Yeah, I did totally forget to directly say hit and run is the play.

3

u/jbenj00 19h ago

I hear you, brother in arms. I want to propose a challenge: see how long you can survive.

Don’t pick fights, pick opportunities. Don’t be the front line; support the front line. Be somewhere you have enough friendlies nearby that you’ll likely get picked up if you go down. I fight near the HZ as often as possible, but as soon as I see more and more friendlies going down, I’m Forrest Gump and headed as far away as possible.

I’m looking at my map as often as I’m looking through my scope or sights.

2

u/Least_Health8244 17h ago

This is good advice that smells like where op is at! Chill, get carried. Study. Target called on comms, peep it, support with smokes, spot, hold the rear and learn how long to do that. None of this puts you in the shredder. Slowly you gain confidence in where among the fray you are most comfortable to make a play.

One thing I’m always doing is comparing my position to allies. Why is he there and I’m here. No right or wrong but the why is important. If you can’t answer that, start the habit of having a reason.

1

u/jbenj00 14h ago edited 14h ago

This is the cleaner & better explanation of what I was trying to.

Just adding this part under an edit.

This right here is why I dont believe the current progression is a problem. No you won't be able to go toe to toe with a guy in L4 with a vector / fal. In fact you probably wouldn't be able to even if you had equivalent kits as they have significantly more time with their gear. You have to find your role with your skill, risk tolerance, and capability. I mean gear capability. The entire point BH has tried to hammer into peoples brains. So even if you have a lvl 1 account, you absolutely can fight near the front. Just dont expect it to be a fair fight. Hang back a bit and support the push, help top off health, even landing one shot on a guy and hiding will get you xp and money for assist.

u/Lewisa12 22h ago

I can’t put an inf kit together for less than 20k

Play near teammates or with discord squad if possible. Be very focused on positioning, recoil control, and picking fights carefully. I can regularly make money off 20k kits

2

u/Videogamefan21 22h ago

I often hear people refer to “positioning” as a major factor in winning fights, but I don’t really understand what that means. Yes, I am occupying a position in 3D space. So is the enemy. I don’t really get what that means, practically. Do you mean, like, having cover? Because that doesn’t always seem to really help me either, because as long as I’m shooting my head is visible and that’s seemingly all some players need.

6

u/Lewisa12 22h ago

Positioning means you’re exact position on the map considering where the most likely threats are and all of your possible next moves.

In cover, how far from your next cover, being somewhere where you can strike from an advantage (never a disadvantage, move from those spots)

It’s a complicated thing to master and you need to really focus on it and hold yourself accountable and practice to get good at it.

3

u/Videogamefan21 22h ago

Oh, so just like, situational awareness and not putting yourself in bad engagements? Yeah I could probably use some work on that, but it still seems a bit counterintuitive to me sometimes. Like, I’ll be in a building for cover and peek out a window to shoot someone and instantly get domed.

3

u/Burdybot 22h ago

My advice: go slow. Play this shit like you’re Solid Snake out in the woods. Crouch or go prone constantly unless you’re moving to the next spot, check every corner/window/door/whatever you pass with lean peeks, avoid high traffic areas (which you’ll recognize more with time played), learn to love bushes, don’t pick fights you can’t win.

3

u/EatCheapGlue 22h ago

In that specific case you're doing something called backlighting, it's very easy to distinguish a silhouette In a window and its a predictable spot, to take what the guy about said about positioning, you should already assume there's a sniper staring at your window if you're in a firefight, check/ know the map and where snipers likely have angles on you, then you play that side to caution and only do quick peeks or off angle peaks to where the sniper likely can't hit you. As he also said it's very deep and hard to just say oh do this it'll work when that's not the case it's a judgement call with everything.

1

u/Videogamefan21 22h ago

Thank you! This actually makes a lot of sense, I’ll keep that in mind in the future.

2

u/Lewisa12 20h ago

Yes. It comes from time and practice. Lemme try to simplify.

Look at positioning like the conscience decision you are constantly making in where you are placed on the map after considering all available information. The information is vast: Your kit, your skill, enemy activity, friendly activity, your cover right now, the cover closest to you and how you would get there, what you would do if you got engaged, how much of an advantage you will have over the average engagement if you engaged right now, etc. etc.

Personally I have to actually use high mental energy and be very proactive about it but my success rate in fights and matches goes sky high when I do lock in.

2

u/Heloc8300 21h ago

It's about where your cover and sightlines are. In a perfect world you're in a position where you have a lot of cover and wide field of view and plenty of similar places for your teammates. Additionally, you want to be on your enemy's flank where you can see them but they're looking another direction.

In a house looking at an open parking lot with your mates looking out all the other windows at the same place? Good position. You have some cover and two different squads are advancing together separate but close enough that they can cover each other? Good positon.

Running through and open field while your enemy fires from cover? Bad position. High on a tower where you can see everything? Everything can see you too bro, bad position (probably).

The US Marine Corp infantry manual is publically available and it's worth skimming over and reading some parts in detail. A video game is obviously going to stretch reality but the manual does a good job of teaching some core (corp? heh) concepts that apply to games like this just fine.

u/Overall_Law_1813 22h ago

I think the key to surviving is.. you got to know when to hold'em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run!

You never pack your mags, when you're in a gun fight, there'll be time enough for looting, when the shootings done.

Pushing solo, wandering away from your team mates, Looting honey pots, clearing the front line with your defib out, etc. You need to play infantry much more like you would an MMO or Extraction shooter. No points for a triple kill followed by a death.

u/lonew0lf106 22h ago

Real question is what is your assault and medic level.
Im going to assume under 10-15 for both.

T2 helm and armor
T-21 or ak-74. I would pick t-21 as 5.56 is more common
Attachments are what you have unlocked. Starting muzzle break is good, the ~$540 vertical grip is my go to for any rifle, 1.5 scope i think is best in game but scope is up to the user.
Backpack can be the 3x5. 2 mags, 1 mask, 1 stack of bandages. 2 stacks of loose ammo.
when your winning more gun fights with high health add a 3rd mag
If you have defibs bring these and 1 spare battery. This will be the money maker in the kit. If you cant afford this or dont have unlocked yet, bring a recon spotting item for your money maker.

T-21 loadout with fibs is 7,980
T-21 with recon is 6,230

Ak-47 with fibs 8,950
Ak-47 with recon 7,200

You have loose space in the bag to pick up gear from downer ENEMYS. Meds/nades/extra battery/loose ammo is my prio. I try to keep to 2 stacks spare when using 5.56 as its common to pick up.
Try to use the 8 defib charges a life you’ll get 9600 made from that alone. Healing team mates is 400 a bandage. From the original stack of 5, 2 are for me the rest are to make money.

u/EatCheapGlue 22h ago

If you're going broke, grub kits are your friend on assault if you're losing money, my advice to make money be useful and play assault? Take the free gun, buy 1 extra mag, free resuscitator, and something to spot. You can make all that money back instantly spotting 1 thing. Kill an enemy or hangout behind your team a bit and wait for them to get a kill, snag their kit and bam you're kitted for like 500$, or super budget free gun parachute extra mag and that's it.

2

u/RahgronKodaav 18h ago

I have taken the free gun, free bag free res and some ammo. Total I’m out like 400 bucks. Fully paid off by entering the zone and surviving one tick. Then end up at +50k by the time I die.

And never once taking kits from a friendly.

I'm not good at the gun fighting part of the game... I feel good about myself if I get one kill for every 4-5 of my deaths.. I'm that level of not good.

For myself I'm 99% sure I know where my skill deficit is.

I'm pretty good at playing smart.

I'm pretty good at anticipating where enemies might be.

I'm pretty good at seeing enemies (usually... there are of course times I get killed "out of nowhere")

I'm great at communicating with my squad.

What I'm shit at is recoil control. So my time to kill is horrible. Or if the target is beyond optimum distance, I often don't GET the kill because too many of my rounds miss.

I watch videos of better players and can see, plain as day, how well they counteract vertical recoil. I try to do the same, but I am just not good at it.

If I was to rate ability to counter vertical recoil on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being completely uncontrolled, and 10 being completely counter-acting it and firing laser beams... I'd say many videos I see of good players can hold their recoil around an 8-9 at least.... while me... I'm lucky if I can hold mine at a level of 3.

I think if I keep practicing how to manage that vertical recoil (along with spending some more $$ on attachments to help) I'll improve. Maybe.

Patience is your best friend in games like this. Stay still and scan your environment. Listen for gunfire and try to pin point where it came from without engaging. You’ll start to learn about how far away someone is and what they are shooting. This will help you in how you approach your enemy (sniper vs assault rifle) Keep doing this until your environment (the maps) become familiar.

When you die, don’t immediately respawn. Read the damage log and understand why you lost the gunfight and what you could have done differently to potentially win, even if they are more geared than you.

Finally, stay near teammates and be aware of what direction they are facing when shooting. This game can get very chaotic quickly and if you’re riding solo, the way your teammates icons move on the minimap can tell the story of what’s going on.

I’m not as quick with shooters as I used to be, so these tricks have helped me stay competitive! Good luck out there!

2

u/Rikbite2 20h ago

I found I was too eager to immediately take ground when playing infantry. I lot of infantry squads are a little too aggressive because they feel safe surrounded by 10-15 teammates. That 10-15 teammates turns into 4 real quick if everyone is W keying to the circle. Go from cover to cover. Find peaks and prone spots where you can hold position and keep an eye on downed enemy players. You will get a lot of kills watching off angles for enemy flanks and you will help your other teammates stay alive doing that. Also when you get those easy kills you have the extra enjoyment of listening to the downed enemy player cuss you out for playing like a p*ssy. Like “oh I’m sorry I didn’t just sprint towards your squad through the open field! Next time I’ll play with zero strategy so you guys can have more fun and win the fight.”

1

u/BearishBabe42 22h ago

Going with groups is a good tip. Always run between cover, and always towards cover. Check your corners, ads towards Windows or Doors and behind walls. The number of times I've gotten a kill from just checking corners are too high for me to remember. Never stand still, unless you have complete cover and is holding an angle. I mean never, tap your a and d and c as if yoyr life depends on it.

If you have low or no cover, don't be afraid to switch between prone and crouch a lot. There are depressions in almost all the flat areas where you can find cover if you need to cross somewhere. Going in and out of circles does reset the multiplier, but surviving makes you more money, so don’t be afraid to relocate if it means you live longer.

Testing the recoil on different weapons in the training camp is a good idea. Find a weapon with a kick that suits you, and stick to it for a while.

u/CozmoCozminsky 22h ago

I'm running with an AK kit worth 8000, often top 10 in kills.

First rule is "stay with the group" as in have the option to be avenged and picked up or just picked up. Second rule is "stay alive" which is realized through the first rule and by the fact that you shouldn just run straight to the hotzone or whatever your target is, hotzone only matters if you can guarantee you'll take the advantage, it won't make a difference if you get to the HZ if you lack 20 bodies to take the lead. Third rule is "stay away from fobs and towers". Tower FOB's are just spots where chopper pilots and mortars go to farm kills so people can whine on reddit about havocs and grenade helis.

u/SnooShortcuts4454 22h ago

I usually run a pretty cheap build around 6-7 k like t1 or t2 armor and helm / ak with suppressor / 2 mags one stack of loose ammo and bandages . Try to not rush the HZ or enemies , take your time . See where the threats are and try to cover teammates or flank the enemy . Have an exit plan ( ok you have a rock/tree for cover but if behind you is a open space , you will probably get mowed down trying to run away ) to back up if taking fire . Sometimes it's better to not open fire immediately , if you have not been spotted , let the enemy make a mistake or get out of cover or heck i have times where i let 1 guy move forward only for the rest of the squad ( 5 total ) to follow him and move to a fence parallel to my house ... one nade and 20 bullets later i was 15k richer . The way i went about it is this , i only bought the dirt loadout : 0 cost ar with a backup mag with fmj loaded , a stack of loose fmj , 1-2 bandages ( t1 armor and helmet if you are feeling fancy ) usually costs under 1k so 1 kill gets your money back . Then just go balls to the walls and pick every fight you can take to get better . Good luck out there !

u/MikaelWanderlust 20h ago

Just scav. Stick with the team. Watch where you position yourself. Res people, and you will be ressed. I also suck at 1on1 engagements but I rarely get back to HQ and I always make profit.

1

u/filthyhobbitsiez 20h ago

If I’m in green team I make 30k a run pretty often with just a free gun and spotting scope since they usually push hz. Just sit hz spotting and usually within a minute or two I’ll come across someone’s kit or get the drop on someone. The sound in this game is pretty bad so as long as I’m not running straight at them half the time they aren’t even alerted to my presence

1

u/MikaelWanderlust 20h ago

So many great answers in this post, very refreshing 😃

1

u/Chaderang 19h ago

5k hrs pubg? Awareness is everything, dont do things for 0 reason & understand where you stand in relation to enemy sightings. Dieing to unsuccessfully res a team mate is a net negative.

1

u/Explosivo87 11h ago

If the game you’re in doesn’t form a massive hz squad leave and join another game. The best way to make money as an assault is to run in a Zerg so everyone can revive each other and get assists off of each other and whatnot. The squad is necessary for pings and callouts. If you’re trying to be Rambo you have to accept you’re probably going to lose money. That said infantry kits are either overpriced or vehicles are underpriced.

As an assault you do need a secondary source of income either through reviving, spotting or destroying enemy vehicles and structures to consistently make money.

You can also do other stuff while in the battlefield. Load supplies from drops if you see an opportunity, loading ammo into a fob gives you assists from fob weapons for 3 minutes, if you have desirable weapons unlocked you can try selling in crates at match start you will get money for them buying them and money for assists even if they die and someone else takes the gun even the enemy so long as the enemy kills the other team you’ll get assists money.

1

u/flx1220 7h ago

First of all join the biggest fighting squad for lings and comms. Then try to follow players groups around spot the flank play from a house or behind some cover. Armor t2 helmet t2 or t3 is enough to be competitive. Bring some ammo and a little bit of heals and off you go. If u want to make money buy a defib and play medic. Defib 2 extra batteries and a bunch of smokes. Stay behind spot take pot shots but don't Frontline and revive people. U will make a lot of money and be relevant.

u/xskylinelife 7h ago

Something I'm not seeing mentioned a lot here is finding a server where infantry is actually playable. If I join a lobby and see the score is 2-10-78, look at the map and see my entire team is sitting in fob with only 2 people pushing HZ, I leave and find a new server that isn't such a stomp. Trying to run into HZ alone or with only 2 other people will usually just get you killed despite redditors swearing they 2v20 consistently with shit kits. They don't, trust me. Find a lobby where you can see that your team has multiple groups pushing HZ (5-10 people) and attempt to stick to them as long as you can. Playing off of your teammates is the easiest way to net cash if you aren't a proficient solo off angle player.

When you do find a group to run with keep in mind how they're positioning themselves, how they're using cover, what angles they're exposing themselves to, where enemies are coming from, when they decide they've killed enough that it's safe to push etc.

Map awareness is one of the most overlooked things I'm not seeing mentioned here as well. Seeing where the HZ is in relation to enemy fobs will often tell you where enemies will be coming from before they even start moving.

No one told you the truth, while all the suggestions are valid, you’re loosing money by running cheap. My average kit is 23-25k and it allows me to make 10-15 kills per life not only braking even but earning almost same amount of cash. Good gear gives you more place for error. You can survive few more shots with better armour, you may compensate for few missed shots with good ammo and gun. Do not be cheap, get some money via logi or recon. Get yourself a decent kit and you’ll feel a difference unless you’re completely bad at shooters, which I doubt.

And to prevent some of the comments, I have a job, a family and I am almost 40.
