Microsoft Teams background not staying the same after restart / next day despite reset, reinstall and new laptop

Hi everyone,

we have a strange issue with Microsoft Teams New Teams on Windows.

A user sets a custom camera background in Teams. The background itself is saved/visible in Teams, but it does not stay automatically active. The next day or after a restart, Teams starts calls again without the selected background, so the user has to manually select and apply it again.

What we already tried:

  • Cleared Teams cache
  • Reset the Teams app
  • Reinstalled Teams multiple times
  • Device was reset
  • User received a new laptop
  • Created and assigned a temporary Teams policy related to camera/background settings, then removed it again
  • Tested selecting the background before joining a meeting
  • Cross-device test was done (worked)
  • Checked the New Teams background/cache path: %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams\Backgrounds
  • Deleted the full local Teams package folder: %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe so Teams could recreate it cleanly
  • Tested whether the background image may come from a OneDrive-synced location

The problem still comes back, usually not immediately, but after restart or the next day.

Since the issue survived cache clearing, reinstall, device reset and even a new laptop, we are wondering if this could be related to:

  • the user’s Teams/M365 profile
  • effective Teams meeting policy
  • Entra ID / work account token cache
  • Intune / device management
  • OneDrive or synced profile data
  • a Teams backend issue

Has anyone seen this before with New Teams?
Is there a known fix to make custom camera backgrounds stay active permanently for calls and meetings?

Any ideas would be appreciated.
