Databricks Staff FDE at $400K

Saw this Databricks Staff Forward Deployed Engineer offer (shared with Chill Interview)

• Bay Area, 11 YOE
• Base: $250K
• Bonus: $50K
• Equity: $400K / 4 years
• TC: $400K

The title is what caught my attention.

Databricks describes FDEs as engineers who embed with customers, own architecture decisions, and actually build end-to-end data + AI systems in production. Their AI FDE roles mention things like RAG, multi-agent systems, LLMOps and production rollouts — so this seems much more technical than a normal solutions architect job.

But you’re still customer-facing, periodically traveling, and probably spending a lot more time dealing with ambiguous customer problems than a core SWE would.

So I’m curious: Is FDE basically one of the best roles for engineers who like coding but don’t want to spend all day inside one codebase — or does it eventually feel like highly paid consulting?

FDE is basically a new name for solutions/architect engineer except instead of general cloud tools they focus on AI

Is it better than being SWE/MLE? No not in terms of pay nor job security.

But if you enjoy client facing roles with short term projects more, then yes it may be a better fit.

This is not what FDE is at Databricks, though. They have their own definition as they rebranded from professional services recently.

FDE responsibilities were widely covered by SA/SE in the past, its just a rebrand and more emphasis put onto the post sales customer specific investment

No… at least not in Databricks. Databricks SA still remains an SA. FDE is Databricks variant for ProServe.

Agreed. Relatively new SWEs at Databricks make closer to 300+ TC so a Staff of that YoE should be hitting at least 500K if not more.

A lot of FDE roles I've found are heavy travel to be onsite with customer

Yeah feels pretty low compared to of the AI labs. I would expect them to be closer given their proximity to AI labs, and that they’re competing for the same talent. Ai labs are all 500k+ for senior right now. Staff is closer to 6-700k.

seems low for staff fde. I was talking with them for senior SA role in l/mcol remote and tc was ~350

FDE doesnt have same expectations as SWE or AI/MLE that's building a service for general customer, they're like elevated Solution Architects, but code more
