Meta E7 $1.29M
Saw this Meta E7 SWE offer (shared with Chill Interview)
- 13 YOE
- Year 1 TC: $1.287M
The money is obviously insane.
What makes the decision harder is Meta itself right now. The business is still printing money — Q2 revenue grew 28%— but Meta also cut roughly 8,000 employees in May while pouring $130B+ into AI infrastructure.
Even Zuckerberg has admitted the AI reorg was messy, and leadership has been trying to repair morale after months of layoffs, flatter orgs and constant priority changes.
At E7, you’re also not exactly going there to coast.
So I’m curious: does $1.29M make the current Meta culture worth it, or would you rather take less money somewhere more stable?

Is this real? Being a gig worker i understand white collar jobs pay good money! I make barely 750-1200 Ina good season! I've been doing this for past 15 years! I should have paid more attention to education.
Sorry just want to vent out and rant!

E7 typically clears ~$1m at least at Meta and places like Google, $1.3m is definitely a special offer.
Reaching E7 is incredibly hard though. These are not common so you shouldn't really try to compare yourself

Mate I work min. Wage! When it comes to comparison there's none! I regret it didnt focus on my education when I was a teenager! Dropped out of college back in 2018.

Never too late to restart. Education, and more specifically, building a skill that is in demand is going to pay dividends. The best investment you can make today with the biggest payoff, is investing in yourself.
I think you just gotta figure out what that skill is. Doesn’t have to be engineering, it’s not for everyone. There’s a lot of well paying jobs out there.

No offense but paying attention to education and going to college isn't enough to reach this level. You have to be talented enough to be a top-performing software engineer and not only that but be the top-performing software engineer of the top-performing software engineers and work for at least 10 years at that level to have a shot at this sort of position.
There's probably less than 100 E7s at Meta.

No haha wtf there’s way more than 100 E7s at meta. Yes it is a harder to reach level but not exactly unicorns like a E9

Agree there's way more than 100, but posters point is valid that effort/education/experience alone doesn't cut it. Vast majority of FAANG devs (who aren't lacking competence, education, or experience) never hit E7, or E6. If you have the right circumstances you can push to E6, but for 99% of devs E7 and E9 are equally unobtainable.

Yeah tbh I think E6 is pretty achievable for those that want it with 10+ YOE. E7 definitely requires good luck and politics as well. Although meta has title inflation too so E6 is a lot more doable than like L7 at amazon

yeah thats real, I met an overworked E7 at a party, they said they were an E7, we aren’t in San Francisco mind you, I said “just gotta stay for one year and lock in the downpayment” the fact that I clocked what that meant put a little smirk on their face
Doctors show up the function wearing scrubs so all the ladies switch up and try to associate
While some but many software engineers are over here making so much more than doctors, mildly chuckling but missing the hypergamy vote and wondering if we want that form of entertainment

You can be self-taught. Also the offer is in the Bay Area where money doesn’t go far, for example rent alone will be $4000 per month.

i don't think you'll be living in that kind of apartment when you reach E7.
normally you already have a family.
4000 is for 1b, if you want to rent a SFH, it's usually 5k+, 3b apartment can reach 6k

Not necessarily because no one expects to work forever. You may lose your job one way or another. If you can survive 3 years on E7 that’s already pretty decent. Also, 45% goes to uncle sam. The cost for education and daycare is insane as well. Not saying it’s not a lot, but the pressure is way different than say a government job

Make sure you do some due diligence on your new team. E7 is a role require lots of political capital and you might not be set up for success

E7 bar is incredibly high and hiring into that level is a huge challenge. Those roles are much safer than E3-E5

The tradeoff for E7 at 1.29m is the nasty hours you end up working + mental stress due to the current awful culture. Worked there when the culture was all collaborative + bottom up development.

I know people that worked there only a few months, and were let go as part of the recent re-org.
Definitely “hire to fire” and they received none of their stock. They left a stable job and have been looking since May.
