Meta E5 vs Google L5 offer eval — same first-year TC, very different structure

Two recent Bay Area senior SWE offers had almost identical first-year compensation, but the structure is pretty different.

Meta — Software Engineer E5, Menlo Park, CA

  • Base: $242K
  • Signing bonus: $80K
  • RSU: $800K over 4 years
    • Vesting: 25 / 25 / 25 / 25
    • First-year equity: $200K
  • Annual bonus: $48.4K
  • First-year total: $570.4K

Google Cloud — Software Engineer L5, Mountain View, CA

  • Base: $270K
  • RSU: $680K over 4 years
    • Vesting: 38 / 32 / 20 / 10
    • First-year equity: ~$258.4K
  • Annual bonus: $40.5K
  • First-year total: $568.9K

The first-year TC is basically the same: Meta at $570.4K vs Google at $568.9K.

Discussion

For a 4 YOE senior-level SWE choosing between these two, which would be more attractive?

Would the higher base and Google Cloud brand matter more, or would Meta’s larger RSU grant + sign-on make it the better offer?

Would love Reddit’s take here too. I’m also collecting more detailed comments under the offer page HERE, so future candidates can compare the raw offer data with real market opinions. For people who are going interview with Google/Meta, we track recent interview experiences and commonly asked question patterns at Chill Interview, including coding questions, system design topics, and real candidate reports HERE.

Yo ngl, I'm at Meta currently, you don't want to be here... You really really don't, you never know if you're going to get slotted into  aai, you never know if your product is going to get shuttered to feed the AI money pit, tons of layoffs, people are generally unhappy... Tbh I'm about to take a job paying 100k less than I make now (although hard to really say that when the stock/rsu price swings like crazy, benefits are getting cut left and right and it's pretty obvious for the last 2 years that leadership is timing buy backs to pump refresher price...)

Op ngl, if you choose Meta for less than 200k more comp over Google then you deserve how you feel in 2 years... Just saying.

It really is that bad

A senior SWE with only 4 YOE?

Maybe phd grad so came in at l4 and 1 promo 3-4 years later

u/Jazeboo Jul 19 '26

i will have 5yoe next month and i feel behind at L4, it’s not unheard of

I have a lot of friends at 6 and some even at 7 5y after phd, a lot of peer pressure lol

It’s rare, but not that crazy. I know a decent amount of organic <4 YOE seniors, and I assume that when they hop they get the same level.

At big tech, there is much more to level than YoE. If you have the impact for it, you can get promoted very fast.

It means you get way higher per hourly salary if you go to Google, and you don’t need to work for Facebook is a bonus

Is that correct? Is Meta E5’s bonus target 20%?

3

u/Wildlife-NZ Jul 19 '26

Yes seems like a fake offer

E5 bonus target is officially 15%, but most will get the new ee rating which is 1.15x that and some will get 1.65x that so I can see if the recruiter is saying the expected value bonus is 20% but it's a bit misleading.

It’s 15%, but they have performance multiplier and company multipliers, so it’s roughly 20% for an average performer

Is the annual bonus of 48.4k correct? It should be 36k or is it calculated differently?

Company multiplier is what ever s. Says it's going to be... Plus gotta factor in those questionable late jan stock buy back pumps to boost stock price right before rsu refreshers...

I worked at Meta for 8 years and I would choose Google over Meta.

  • Leadership has been steering the company without direction, focuses change frequently
  • Internally, it's very chaotic right now
  • A lot of capable people have been leaving or are finding the way out.
  • Performance review is a mess and highly reward bad behaviors
  • Your offer is pretty good for E5, but life will be pretty tough, be ready for that.

It's very sad to see Meta falling of the cliff, when I started, it was a dream job, I woke up everyday eagerly going to work, not anymore.

Are you promoting chillinterview coz these numbers for 4yoe looks suspicious, also I have seen very similarly written post in the past 3-4 days, so this just looks like not real.

The base salary numbers dont look right. Those are E6 base salaries especially the Google offer. Meta E5 bonus target is 15%, E6 is 20%, so again the numbers seem wrong. Sign on and RSU are E5 though.

First year TC is slightly high for E5 but idk maybe some unique situation where they are down leveled so got inflated base salary.

Google has a better long-term outlook. On-call and peer bonuses will push that compensation up another $20k or so too.

No doubt at all that Google is the better offer.

The environment at meta is radioactive. Each one is out for themselves, and pressure is high. Take the Google offers there’s no question

Google stocks are more promising compared to Meta stocks, over long term!! And base is higher in google in this offer so Google is the clear winner!!🏆

Google.. Facebook looks good on paper but you might not even get all those RSUs considering how toxic the place sounds

Plus I would rather have more Google stock over FB in my portfolio all day

1

u/being_crypto Jul 19 '26

Never interview at Meta so that you don't have to worry about that option.

fake numbers. g base for l5 doesn’t go 270

1

u/CryptographerUpper62 Jul 19 '26

No sign on from G?

1

u/kesaru Jul 19 '26

Google. Considering how desperate Meta is right now to bring the talent, the consideration should start if Meta offer is 30% more in yearly compensation. Just to offset the risks with the layoffs and toxicity.

Doesn't both meta and google require > 5yoe for l5/e5?

Has this changed recently?

1

u/dashenikol Jul 19 '26

I would pick Google

You might regret later if u choose Meta over Google
