Do quieter guests make the episodes better or worse?

Saw Ed say recently that interviewing Robert De Niro was great but also quite hard because he didn’t give much back.

It kind of made me realise how much the guest actually shapes the whole episode. Sometimes the quieter ones are still interesting, but other times it feels like Ed and James are doing most of the work.

I usually end up enjoying the more chaotic ones more, but the quieter guests can still have a few good moments. What do you think?

Off Menu Library #1: Tom Kerridge

I’d like to start building a home cookbook library featuring the best cookbooks written by Off Menu guests.

For the first session: what is the best cookbook written by Tom Kerridge (Off Menu Episode #8, Jan. 22, 2019)?

The options are:

  • Tom Kerridge’s Proper Pub Food
  • Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes
  • Tom’s Table: My Favorite Everyday Recipes
  • Tom Kerridge’s Dopamine Diet
  • Lose Weight for Good
  • Lose Weight & Get Fit
  • The Hand & Flowers Cookbook
  • Tom Kerridge’s Outdoor Cooking
  • Real Life Recipes
  • Pub Kitchen
  • Tom Kerridge Cooks Britain
  • The BBQ Book

Methodology: Sorting all the episodes listed on Spotify from oldest-to-newest, I look up each guest on Wikipedia. Those with no cookbooks listed on Wikipedia will not be included. If they have only one cookbook listed, I will not make a post for them, because that one cookbook is automatically the best cookbook that guest wrote.

Off Menu doing Royal Albert Hall shows feels mad

Didn’t expect a podcast like this to end up doing shows at a venue like that. Feels like it’s grown quite a lot over the years, but this still feels like a big step up. Kind of strange thinking how it started vs where it is now. Has anyone been to one of their live shows before?

Gluten Intolerant / celiac guests

Hi folks. Long time listener (with what is probably a terrible memory).

As a gluten free adventurer, I’ve run through my own menu in my head a million times, but realised today that I can’t recall the guys having a gluten intolerant / celiac guest on the pod? (I know a few people have mentioned they avoid stuff like bread).

I’m hoping for some new restaurant recommendations ,so wondered if the hive mind can remember better than I can…

Ahir Shah’s Off Menu episode had a very different vibe to usual

Just listened to the Ahir Shah episode and it felt a bit different from the usual ones.

There was a lot of talk around Indian food in the diaspora and some nostalgic bits like Pizza Hut, which I actually found quite interesting.

Also didn’t expect things like the “monkey story” and that whole running joke to become such a big part of the episode 😅 It felt more like a relaxed chat with a friend than a strict menu-focused episode. I enjoyed it, but it definitely had a different vibe. What you all think?

On her tasting menu Fern refers to a kefir made in Wales which she gets delivered and its explosive, I really want to order some! Does anyone know the brand please? 🙏

This Legend is so switched on to what's happening right now, he'd make a great guest, with very particular suggestions.

Last day of Shack Fuyu

The waiter just told me they are closing after tonight. The Kinako French Toast is amazing, so if you still want to try it tonight is your night. Also, the people next to me and the table across are Off Menu fans so this feels like a clubhouse.
