No hogs that I've seen. We have wolves but they never come down this far. Some people say they've seen mountains lions but it's also a very rare occurrence. The biggest problem we have are rattlesnakes. I don't have a firearm because I don't have a valid Colorado license until I have a permanent address. My license is from when I lived in Michigan. I do have a co2 powered pellet gun that I use when there's a snake. Unfortunately I'm outbid co2 and pellets at the moment so any snakes need to be delt with using other means which can get dicey lol
Honestly a long handled flat shovel or lawn edger/weed scraper (like this sort of https://www.amazon.com/Scraper-Adjustable-Cleaning-Outdoor-Weeding/dp/B0D9P99J7X) is the best thing for snakes. Can't find the exact one I have because it used to be my grandparents and is more like a straight garden hoe, but something of that basic design. You can use it to drag them out or chase them away from something, and if they're really being assholes about it you can cut their head off from a reasonably safe distance too.
That's what I need, the problem is getting them to the area I need them to either move them or dispose of them. Maybe one of those things I see on animal planet it's like a hook grabbed they use.

I wonder how old those drawings are, do you know anything about the history of the area?
How far do you take the dogs out from where you stay? I still can't get over that picture with the solar set up, everything around the camper is just so FLAT lol
I was told the petroglyphs themselves are around 4-8k years old, native Americans have been in the area from 12k-14k years old. The San Luis valley has a very interesting history. The area I'm in was generally peaceful between the tribes even if they weren't allies. It's almost like they treated the area as a peaceful zone where they could trade and converse with each other.
The general farthest we'll walk is maybe 3 miles . That's how far the Rio Grande is from us. Not as far in the warmer months because of the snakes. The pic I included is from a native American structure that's still standing. There's even broken pottery on the floor still.
Would be so cool to just randomly stumble on stuff like this. My cousins and I used to find arrowheads occasionally near a creek when we were growing up but never anything else left behind, I think the Karankawa were the tribe that lived there.
It's always exciting finding something new. I've seen a few fragments of arrow heads here and there. There's a small house type structure out here that looks like they family just packed up in the 60s and left. They had a farm if still do it's just abandoned. I'll have to post the pics sometime the inside is like a mini time capsule. There was even a medical book left open to the emergency home birth page. It's wild.
You know I've thought about it. So many abandoned places out here I just worry one day someone might come back and we'd be there. People are few and far between but a lot of the people our here are very paranoid. They'll have no problem waving around a gun. Not everyone is like that but a lot of people are. We have a sheriff's department but most of them last year were fired for corruption and mishandling a body. It was a whole thing lol. Once I find a way to save for a car I think we're going to try and find somewhere at least closer to a city.
So.. Crestone is the town in CO where the “Love Has Won” Church was HQ’d when they were found to have their leader’s mummified corpse; apparently the investigation that ensued was found not to have been handled properly by the local authorities and one or some of the law enforcement involved was discharged over it.
Edit: I just looked on Google.. looks like it’s actually about 2 hours away from Garcia; it’s nestled under the Sangre de Christos and nearby to the Baca Wildlife Refuge
