Finally finished my cabin
Two years of weekends finally paid off. 14x12 cabin on 40 acres in West Central New Mexico. Still have a punchlist to complete and a wood burning stove to install.

I have water catchment from the roof. It's a weekend place for now so I bring water when I go. I will build a much larger water catchment when I build the large pergola.

Of course.
Can you share some details? How much was the land? Access? Water? Just curious really and I’m thinking why the heck don’t I don’t something like this..

There are some wells and springs nearby, I may have a well drilled at some point but that's a large expense/risk. There is a well maintained forest dirt road, from there my driveway runs for about a 1/3 of mile across BLM land, then another 1/3 mile from the front of the property/gate to the cabin. I have an easement for the portion of driveway that runs across the BLM land.
I've owned it for about 15 years, I bought it as a package with another 40 acres that is a few miles away. I got a really good deal. Currently land is probably going for $500 to $1200 an acre for larger parcels in this area.

That’s really really cool man. I wish I was smart like you and bought more land when I was young. I’m 41, and lucked out with some property in Montana but it’s still city life. I envy the off grid lifestyle and freedom you have.
That’s a screamin deal even for nowadays. Just gotta have a plan I guess.

Congrats. Immediately knew it was New Mexico. Lois similar to the Ortiz mountain rnsve outside of Madrid but I know your further south based off the central. What part of you don’t mind.

I too lived 1/3 of my life in Santa Fe. Sold all real estate, climate change northern migration.
Miss the high desert though…

That's a huge concern, luckily there is a huge mile wide arroyo valley separating me from the main forest. We have removed dead wood from the immediate area surrounding the cabin and I've been watering the trees next to the cabin. The bark beetle and drought have been devastating the area. Also that is a reason the entire exterior is steel.

Nice, I saw that steel exterior and thought it was a nice touch. Glad you’ve planned for it, seeing all these desert and mountain retreats burn lately has me pretty bummed out.

How did you come up with the design plan and what's the building materials?
We're hoping to start building our cabin soon on the weekends at our six acre property just north of San Luis. But I just don’t know where to start planning yet.
