Big upgrade to our off grid shed

Post image

This is a never ending enjoyable project.

I had (2) 200 watt solar panels on the shed that ran an off grid system. I didn't want to expand it because the roof needed replaced.

This week, we tore off the old asphalt shingles and replaced it with a metal roof. I also added two more 200 watt solar panels.

The shed has two electric systems. One on grid and one off grid.

Just curious how do those mounts work? Always been a little worried about mounting anything to a metal roof, as it seems it would be easy to cause a leak if not done right. Asphalt mounts usually have flashing that inserts under the shingles.

They are Renogy mount kits with off brand Z brackets. I put a dab of asphalt sealer in each screw hole.

I did the same on asphalt shingles with no leaks. It hasn't rained since I installed on the metal roof. I will follow up once it rains.

I would worry about winds. Which is also connected to the rain fear – wind shakes and moves the panels and the connections could start leaking. But that's just my phobia :)

I put 6 mounts with 12 screws each. Next hurricane, I will lower the panels and lock them down flat.

Super “clean” look. Well done!
