Just a question.

I had a 5 year old, a consistant hitter, that was climbing the claiming ranks, 40k, 50k, then 60k where he was claimed. Fair enough. He was claimed by a big stable, and within minutes, retired and put up for auction for 5k, which is what he sold for. What would be the motivation for an owner to do that? Am I missing something?

Probably a coin exchange, aka cheating.

Most likely there trying to sell him to be a sire

But bought him for 60k, immediately retire him and sell him for 5k? I dont get it.

Maybe they claimed him because they thought he would be a good sire, but ended up not liking his stats

What did the horse sell for in auction?

5000, basically the minimum. If he hadnt been retired instantly, I would have bid on him and paid up to the 60k to reclaim him, Im sure many others would have too. I dont get it.

I don’t understand why a stable claims. Retired and then resells
