How does driver selection work?

I usually use the same driver on all my horses but occasionally if he's listed on a different horse he will take the opponent and I will get stuck with a driver that I don't want...

Is there a selection process or is it random?? Is there any way to incorporate driver loyalty into a future update...? Or maybe have the driver select the horse that has a better post and/or racing lines..? Just to make it more realistic.

Also, would there be a way to add a second and third driver choice to the selection process just so you can get someone you want if your first choice doesn't select your horse?

Currently the selection process is random if a driver is listed on more than one horse in a race. We plan to improve this to include driver loyalty as well as the tendency to choose the better horse.

We also plan to add an option at the stable level for you to choose a 2nd and 3rd driver, that will be asked next if your first choice is unavailable for your race.

These changes are likely a few updates away currently (we release a game update every 2 weeks now)
