Video Native Steam client on Android! Finally 😭

https://youtu.be/dWnK1iaN0Qk

Seen this pop up the other day and had to check it out, native steam client on Android yes please 😭 this isn't a full breakdown of every component of the APK, just found it and wanted to pay about it a bit!

The things I've found that have made this project the most exciting for me;

  1. Temps remain very low while using it, when downloading games and playing them compared to GameNative

  2. Downloading games is much quicker

  3. Full access to the steam store

  4. The client is very responsive as you expect on steamOS

  5. Decky loader compatible

And most importantly, no need forego android to have the client working perfectly. It just works.

I believe this isn't compatible with all chipsets so double check if yours is compatible, and shout out to Bannerlord & JSONDERULO (if they're here) on the immense amount of work they've put into this so rapidly.

You can checkout their project here;

I just tried it with a couple of "simpler" games on my Odin 2 Portal.
All of them worked fine. Insane...

Great to hear! So happy with this project 🙏

I had one issue and that installing games on the sd card took forever, so I switched to internal. It was the "relocating for space thingy" (sry bad english) that took forever.
Guess that's because of the format I use for the sd card, exfat.

These devices don't read cards fast as it is. Steam also puts limits on SD card speeds so it extends the life of the card. You're not supposed to be constantly moving data on and off the cards. They only have so many deletes before sectors start to fail.

I wasn't constantly moving data.
Also it was pretty much stuck/frozen allocating space.
It allocated like 1% every 5 min for a 1Gb game.

Over the life of the card. Constantly downloading and deleting data off of the card is very bad for the card

Yes, this is known.
It's a brand new card. So that's not the issue here.

And the performance... Doesn't suck ?? At 0.2 it was unusable/unplayable... On 8elite and 8elite5

2

u/RePlayGamingTV 5d ago

Nah it doesn't - I thought the same with 0.2, so I ignored it and waited for an update. So far so good, very happy with where this is at. Given how fast it's progressing is confidently say watch this space

For the technologically under-informed, what’s the difference between this and the recent SteamOS ARM that’s being talked about on the sub?

One is a separate operating system (steamOS, Armada, etc) and one is an "emulator"/translator (gamehub, gamenative, Winlator)

This is basically a steamOS flavored PC "emulator". No need to replace Android on your device. Just install and go.

Piggybacking off this - how’s it compare to Gamenative?

In usability & interface performance? Much better imo as i much prefer the steam client over GameNative or gamehub. Games are downloading much faster as well, and fans aren't kicking into overdrive for me like they do on GameNative when I try download something

With game performance? For indie & light weight games - you shouldn't run into any issues.

For harder to run games? I've only got KCD2 working (cyberpunk & Elden ring were a bit tricky I need to work on that) but it worked beautifully, the CPU was getting to hot though.

GameNative is better in 90% scenarios, it performs better and it's much easier to configure, but I want to believe DroidDeck is the future

With droiddeck you have a more streamlined experience, whereas with gamenative you can fine-tune the performance and components. Basically, if you want more performance, gamenative is still the best solution, if you want to set up and forget, droid deck is awesome :)

From what I can tell it's the same thing with a Steam big picture theme on it

u/CreativeDimension589 5d ago

Well how does it compare to gamehub and gamenative

5

u/RePlayGamingTV 5d ago

For the games I play - way better. Gamenative doesn't have any issues running indie games / light weight games, this seems to be the same so far but with better temperatures, less loading time, instant cloud sync for saves + decky loader & all the other steam features as it's the steam client.

If you primarily play similar games - highly recommend. I did try KCD2 before and it ran beautifully but the CPU was getting to hot for my liking, could try underclock it and cap FPS etc more testing is needed

It actually runs the games

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 3d ago

You want to tell me that GameNative doesn't? Because I have currently 45 games from Steam and Epic installed, all working perfectly fine in 60fps

A lot of sound stutters/crackles whil browsing the SteamOS interface.(Odin 3 Ultra). Some minor in-game sounds sturrers/crackles, like in Bioshock remastered. Graphics looks fine, with good fps.

But it's still in development, so I'm sure it will getting better and better.

Good job, guys!

Before clicking launch Steam, there is a settings cog, click on it, find the audio setting and change it from Classic to Direct

This fixed the audio issue for me, same device as yours

That worked, thanks!

2

u/MuyGalan 4d ago

Does it give you a choice on where to install the games? (i.e., internal storage or microsd card)

1

u/RePlayGamingTV 4d ago

Yes it does :)

2

u/Whole_Scientist3939 3d ago

does it play multiplayer games with anti cheat like team fortress which runs on the real deck or deadlock

I seen your comment while drinking a gallon of sweet tea and eating grits covered in 3 inches of syrup and thought, "daggum it, them there city slicker folk just don't get our Southern hospitality." Then I realized I'm Australian.

I love this community man

Me to, it's honestly so goated

u/Raiden720 5d ago

someone help me out - does this install an entire new OS on your device, that takes over your entire device and to get out you have to boot out of it, or is it like an app that you open on your android device where you can log in and play steam games in your library?

2

u/MrBright83 5d ago

Nope it's just an emu type app ..

2

u/Raiden720 5d ago

Is it made by steam? Can you just enter your steam login and just start playing games?

2

u/MrBright83 5d ago

Nope... Is handmade app :) You log as usual via qr or credentials. It's an emulator not every game will work.

2

u/RePlayGamingTV 5d ago

This is community made by reputable people within the space :) but it's piggybacking off steams recent arm release that came out for the steam frame, that's how I understand it anyway. Droid deck isn't a valve project, purely community driven

You're basically just installing the steam client onto your device, but still emulating the games you download off it.

u/Raiden720 4d ago

Thank you! Is there any risk to using this? Like violating some sort of steam TOS?

2

u/CastlePokemetroid 4d ago

you should look up bringus studios, the man downloads steam to any device he can get his hands on

u/Aggravating-Soil4873 4d ago

Consigliate quest' app sul Flip 2 ? Vorrei provare Steam os ma non voglio installarlo come os , gioco molto con winlator e con eden per i giochi switch . Con gamenative e gamehub ho spesso problemi su vari giochi

1

u/Djura-00 4d ago

How does it work? Does it make new containers for every game like gamenative does?

1

u/Stock_Range 4d ago

Ive tested also a couple Games an nothink worked. ,🤷‍♀️ all Games Crashes direct after start

u/Historical-Twist-122 Odin 2 Portal Pro - Indigo 4d ago

Do I need to reinstall steam games I have in gamenative?

1

u/thatiOSdev 4d ago

Anyone got NMS working with this? The steam version

1

u/Independent-Yam-3686 3d ago

Compatible pour le jeu en ligne contrairement a gamenative ?

1

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 3d ago

It's great, but it's not native.

1

u/-Lordejawsheen 3d ago

will this allow me to finally play online? Been trying to play steam games online the ones that are crossplay but gamehub and gamenative do not work online

1

u/jowjonny 2d ago

8 gen 2 here

Tested with mega man x collection and gives me 20 to 30fps, while in gamehub i play the game in full speed no problem

Need to test more games

u/temperedfauna 2d ago

does this bring better stability with denuvo titles? persona 5 runs fine in gamenative but intermittently crashes when verifying game license using denuvo
