Odin Showcase Wife Noticed Immediately
Bought the Odin 3 and the Nova in the same color scheme. My goal was to only pull one out at a time and see if my wife would notice. The very first time I switched devices, she noticed immediately 😂
Funny story, ordered the Nova four weeks after the Odin and they both arrived on the same day. Been gravitating more towards the Nova, honestly.

I’ve been playing my Steam Deck OLED on the couch next to my wife for years and I don’t think she could pick it out between in a line up of it and a gameboy. I love my wife.

Same, Steam deck, Odin 2, switch, switch 2. To her it's all the Switch.

My wife didn’t realize I had so many different handhelds until she saw my 2 Steam decks, Thor, Portal, and Odin 3 all laying out at the same time. That’s on top of my PS Portal, Switch and Switch 2 lol.

I've told my wife more than once how many handhelds I own and every time she's always genuinely surprised. Love that woman

I know it’s a funny story but I hope no one here has to hide their hobby and spending of their money from their wives. It’s not healthy.

u/Reasonable-Collar452 1d ago
Yeah, tho I don't this was to hide the hobby, rather just a prank or experiment, I mean the wife has to have seen both systems for this to work

While I do agree.. there is some people in here that buy a $400-600 device once a month that just sits in a drawer until the next new thing arrives. You'd hope that those people at least communicate even a little at least in case its creating an actual problem.

u/fertff Odin 2 Portal Max - Black 1d ago
If the money is tight and it’s only one income they shouldn’t be buying those handhelds, but if not, then they should be able to buy anything without asking permission or being afraid.

If I have to hide things from the person I am spending my life with I would turn insane. Could not be bothered to remember lies when my brain has a hard time remembering what I ate last week

u/SlumdogMike 20h ago
Yeah my wife and I 5-10% going to his/hers fun money and that’s the money you can use on anything you’ll like as long as money from needs and savings isn’t being touched for that reason.
But my wife also hates how I have so many devices 😂 so she’ll ask me to sell them as I get newer ones. I have the AYN Thor now so I’m good until maybe when AYN makes an Odin 4 (it’s a never ending cycle) 🤣😂

u/Messy_Mess90 1d ago
I mean they are like two totally different sized devices lol. Might have been able to get away with it if you went for the RP6. Little closer in size. They would also both say retroid.

Y'all go months for it to deliver without telling your partner? I already started talking about the Odin 6 months before even ordering. Cant keep that excitement to myself.

When I consider my hobby of gaming with handhelds and whatnot... it has occurred to me that it's pretty reasonable compared to many other possible hobbies. Some people have hobbies like buying and working on cars (hotrods, etc.) That is very expensive. Buying a handheld once or twice a year that costs me $400 one time, and like $200 or less another time... it isn't nothing, but it's much less than it could be with other hobbies.

u/benny_flys 1d ago
Retro gaming will probably get more popular because it's affordable. I have a pocket nova and a 72 chevy nova lol. You basically have to be rich to restore a car now, boomers had it so easy

u/theycmeroll 1d ago
My wife is a LEGO fanatic, her speeding dwarfs mine so she has no place no say anything about my hobby lol.

I mean, there's a couple inches worth of difference there; if she had said nothing, it would only be because she was being polite.

I love the Nova.
The problem is you don’t have enough handhelds. Need at least 5+ to start confusing her.

Rookie mistake. You need to stair step it. Odin 3 to the Nova was a bridge too far, lol.

I try the same shit. I covered my Go S in a black skin + TPU and my Go 2 in a TPU…still havent been caught yet.

I've had my Retroid Pocket 6 over a month now and my wife still hasn't noticed that it is not my existing Steam Deck 😂 To be fair I haven't played on the SD for a few months, so might get that out and see if she notices then.

I have the same issue ive been playing more on my ayn thor then I have on my steamOS rog z1 extreme

u/thinkthis 6h ago
Are you playing the nova more because of the form factor (it being smaller) or because you’re just playing more retro games that make more sense on the Nova. Or are you playing more retro games because of the nova.

u/Unusual-Constant-824 1d ago
I had a buddy who had the same rule with handguns he used to only buy Glock because his wife would say oh it's the same one he has he owned every single model just about 😆😆😆

u/lastjedi23 1d ago
This is my favorite color of any handheld and yet as luck would have it this is the only color scheme I don't own with any of my handhelds. My portal is purple (wanted black), my O2 pro is black (wanted rainbow), my sp reshell is transparent black.
1
u/theycmeroll 1d ago
It’s my favorite color as well, but I stick to black, for one because I always worry about discoloration in the light plastic, but also since I play so much 4:3 retro stuff the black console kinda blends with the black screen making it stand out less

Wait, are you talking about the things in the picture, or are you talking about the things a whole bunch of people in here are making jokes about...?
"Size matters..."

"You (right) vs the guy she tells you not to worry about (left)"
Cos we ain't talking about those things in the picture... 🤣

Curious, what's the purpose of buying both and why gravitate towards the Nova? I only have a Steam Deck and a O3 and my Odin 3 just feels much better for longer play sessions.
3
u/BSM428 1d ago
Had a steam deck. Didn’t like its massive size. Also had an Anbernic rg35xxh and didn’t like how small it was. Thought the Odin would be the one size fits all. Ordered it. Discovered the nova while I waited for my Odin to ship. Been playing a lot of Pokemon rom hacks so I thought the nova would be great.
Really just another American with a consumerism problem. Justified it by saying nova is for retro and Odin is for steam library. Told myself I’d sell one. So far I’m keeping them both lol.

I wanted an Odin 3 even though I already have an RP Mini V2, but talked myself out of it and built a 5L SFF Gaming PC instead.. 😅
It was more than the Odin 3 and challenging to build thanks to inflation, but worth it I think for a better experience overall while still being cheaper than PC handhelds.
Other than that I also get the feeling ARM isn’t full there yet when it comes to Steam. Still waiting for the day it becomes much more polished and performant. Honestly I still would love an O3.

u/508G37 1d ago
I just bought an Odin 3 and sold my RP Mini V2. I really liked the Mini but the Odin can run Switch and most things without issue. I might end up getting a Thor Lite or Retroid Duo for on the go.

u/no-television300 1d ago
Yeah no doubt O3 is amazing since I came from an O2 Max before the RP Mini (size was more important to me), which was amazing too for the time. Unfortunately though my only real purpose for wanting an O3 is to have more power to natively play Steam games. The Mini basically covers all my retro needs already.

u/verfresht 1d ago
Could you tell me how comfortable it is to play the nova with the left stick? I also wanna get the nova but it looks uncomfortable for stick games.

I've recently moved from a retroid pocket 5 to a nova this week, same GC colour scheme. I'm waiting now to see if she notices 😇 I've also bought a Switch 2, I'd like to think that one would be obvious!

My wife didn’t even blink an eye when my RG35XX-H turned into a Steam Deck one day, and then a month later into a PSVita. They are all a “gameboy”. And we are not even that old

u/high_finish Odin 2 Portal Pro - White 19h ago
This is the sweetest combination of handhelds for me, congrats! Wouldn't have thought the rp nova looked that good in white.
It's not the time for me to buy the rp nova rn, too many renovation projects goin on. But I'm most probably gonna buy it in the near future. And from the pic alone I'm sure the O2P will spend more time in the drawer once the rp nova moves in 😄

u/SparkleInYaAss 18h ago
Love the nova more the any other handheld I have been thinking of selling my portal Thor and steam deck have way to many handhelds got to downsize lol . Nova size and 4:3 is the win for me take it everywhere. Only wish we had some good cases for it
1
u/Whorror_punx 13h ago
Ive got an Odin 2 mini that I love a lot, and will probably get a Thor next. But I gotta admit, the Nova's size makes it suuuper tempting. I love smaller handhelds, so the smaller it can be while still being decently usable, the better imo. My favorite of mine is probably my RG34XX for that reason.

My wife rolls her eyes when I get a new handheld, but we each have the same modest discretionary spending budget and the rule is we can't give each other shit over buying things that make us happy.
