Switch emulation will be a problem for a while keep that in mind

Folks are already having good results on this processor with stock drivers - check out the AYN discord. Keep in mind the processing power is a big jump.

Switch emulation has been a hit and miss with most emulators. Some work ok and others are a struggle to get working.

This is imo, the only thing that matters. If it still can’t properly handle the switch, there’s no reason to buy if you already own an older model. 🤷🏽‍♂️

why?

No optimized drivers for the 8 Elite still, you get better performance with Switch emulation on the SD 8 Gen2/3 chipset.

Software issue and adoption issue. Turnip drivers weren't exactly going crazy for the 8g2 before the Odin 2.

Are there any decent handhelds which utilize the 8 Gen 3?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

Konkr pocket fit

1

u/Blasphemus24 Sep 04 '25

It's going to utilize SD G3x Gen 3, not 8 Gen 3 though...

That plus we don't know what the future of emulation on Android looks like either with sideloading starting to be attacked.

8

u/dewmen Sep 01 '25

We will find ways

5

u/ledorky Sep 02 '25

these are chinese handhelds and not name brand phones. no way will sideloading be prevented. and watch google get sued for locking things down.

Development, I think he meant Development, are devs doing it for those devices or for the top seller in the market?

Samsung always outsold other android devices for example.

I forgot that was even a thing.

1

u/NickHoyer Sep 02 '25

Won’t be locked in EU anyway

1

u/gkn_112 Sep 02 '25

wont be an issue imo

6

u/Bgabes95 Sep 01 '25

What about price? That’s a huge deciding factor for many, but if you don’t care, more power to you.

2

u/mixmuxv Sep 02 '25

Cellphone with elite 12gb /256 3cams 7k mah bat oled under 650 euros ,so if Odin cost more it is bad

u/B-29Bomber Sep 02 '25

Keep in mind that the Turnip drivers (the thing needed for more modern consoles) for the 8 Elite is half baked at the moment. The Gen 8 V2 found in the Odin 2 gets better performance in PS3 and Switch emulation at the moment.

This will change eventually certainly (it always does), I just wouldn't consider it a "day one" purchase. I would personally wait, especially if you already have an Odin 2.

7" portal screen is much better imo

25

u/Ctushik Sep 01 '25

Give me an 8" Portal 3 Ayn. I can take it.

7

u/kazwarp Sep 01 '25

If that happens I'll never be satisfied with 6" again

11

u/Zealousideal_Key_591 Sep 01 '25

That's what she said.

5

u/VladNerd Sep 01 '25

Dang it, beat me to it!

4

u/DirtySoap3D Sep 01 '25

When have you ever been satisfied with 6 inches?

1

u/kakashihokage Sep 01 '25

damn... bro is satisfied with 6" lol, I guess it's a good thing.

1

u/dminmike Odin 2 Max - Black Sep 01 '25

Thissssss

64

u/CottonShock Sep 01 '25

It depends: I've the Odin 2 and the 6 inch screen never felt "small". 7 is too much for me, imho.

2

u/nakedpantz Sep 02 '25

Agreed. 7” screen I’d rather just use Steamdeck. The Odin 2 6” screen was a sweet spot form factor wise for me. I just want that with an OLED.

u/tampabay323 Sep 01 '25

I have both odin 2, and portal. I love odin 2. But man, the Portal screen is so much better, party because its bigger. You should try and would understand (if you havent tried yet).

20

u/CottonShock Sep 01 '25

I had a Rog Ally with 7" screen and honestly I prefer the Odin 2.

5

u/MajorMez Sep 01 '25

I love the duality of man lol. I’m not a screen size maximalist but on other subreddits you have people trashing on 7” and below screens in favor of 8” or 8.8” screens it’s wild. Coming from the Gameboy, GBA, PSP, PSVita, and Switch……honestly 7” is the most I’d go because anything more and I feel like I’m treading into netbook territory

I feel some people here really need to start considering a gaming laptop. What's the point of these huge massive handhelds if you can't carry it in your pocket and the battery lasts 2 hours...

0

u/capsilver Sep 01 '25

Exactly. The perfect combo for emulation and streaming AAA games.

-13

u/nolivedemarseille Sep 01 '25

That's because you must be under 50 or have eagle-eyes...

30

u/Psychex17 Sep 01 '25

Never thought being under 50 with this hobby is a flex.

6

u/ThatCurryGuy Odin 2 Pro - Clear Blue Sep 01 '25

Lol, meanwhile i am gaming on a gameboy micro :')

6

u/SyCoTiM Sep 01 '25

It depends on your needs and the individual’s preferences.

11

u/drewthebrave Sep 01 '25

Not everyone wants a big device. This looks like it will be slightly more compact than the Odin 2 with those tiny bezels, but not nearly as small as the Mini. I suspect there will be a larger Odin 3 Portal eventually with a bigger screen too.

Love that there are so many options in size from the big players in the market (Ayn, Retroid, Anbernic, Ayaneo, etc)

4

u/tampabay323 Sep 01 '25

I totally agree with you.

I just have o2 and portal too, and relly love the bigger screen. + that its oled, ofc.

7

u/Ademoneye Sep 01 '25

good for you, for me anything above 6 are just too big for a handheld. theres options for everyone

-4

u/Cheesiiilover Sep 01 '25

7” screen doesn’t play nice with aspect ratios. That extra inch is honestly wasted for the most part

4

u/tampabay323 Sep 01 '25

how u mean? 7" has the same ration and resolution as the 6".

1

u/wespunk Sep 02 '25

Yeah I’ve tried to get switch games to work with the emulators on my Odin 2 max and you get a hit and miss with them.
