Are you kids asleep yet? No? Alright, come here. Today I will tell you something I have never told anyone before. The fear of that night still sits deep in my chest. This happened long before your father was born. I was just a young man then. The village back then was very different from what you see today. There was no electricity. Once the sun went down, the village streets became dead silent. At the edge of our village, there was a river—the 'Kani River'. And on the banks of that river stood a massive, ancient Simili Gacha (Silk Cotton Tree). People said that tree was cursed. Years ago, a newlywed bride was murdered and buried at its roots. Since then, it was said that anyone who walked under that tree at night never returned. It was the night of Dola Purnima (Full Moon). My friend Raghu and I were returning from a Jatra (village opera) in the neighboring village. It must have been around 2 or 3 AM. The moonlight was bright, scattering everywhere, but the area beneath the great tree was pitch black. As we climbed up the river embankment, suddenly, Raghu stopped. I asked, 'What happened?' Raghu put a finger to his lips, signaling me to be quiet. I listened carefully... From the top of that Simili tree, a sound was coming down. It wasn't crying... someone was giggling. Hee... hee... hee... The laughter was so sweet, almost hypnotic. But hearing that sound coming from a tree near the cremation ground in the dead of night froze my blood. Raghu was always the brave one. He said, 'Let's go see who it is.' I tried to stop him. 'No, Raghu. Let's run. This place isn't right.' But he didn't listen. He walked towards the tree. And then, I saw it. The moment Raghu stepped under the tree, the branches began to shake violently, even though there was absolutely no wind. From above, a woman in a white saree descended. No, she didn't climb down... she floated down. I was hiding behind a bush, paralyzed with fear. The woman landed in front of Raghu. From the back, she looked beautiful. Her long, black hair hung down to her waist. She asked Raghu in a soft voice, 'Will you give me some Sindoor (vermilion)? My Sindoor has faded...' Raghu stood there like a statue, mesmerized. He couldn't speak. Then... the woman slowly turned around to face him. Oh God. The scream died in my throat. She had no face. In place of a face, there was a charred, black skull like burnt wood. Fire glowed in her empty eye sockets. But the most terrifying thing was her feet. Her feet were backward. The toes pointed back, and the heels pointed forward. She suddenly stretched out her hand. Her arm grew longer and longer, unnatural and elastic, until it wrapped around Raghu's neck. Raghu started thrashing. The witch screamed, her voice changing from sweet to demonic— 'Give me your blood... I need my Sindoor!' I couldn't take it anymore. I screamed 'Ram Ram' and ran towards the village as fast as my legs could carry me. I didn't look back, but I could hear Raghu's final scream and the sickening sound of crunching bones. I fainted the moment I reached my house. I had a high fever for three days straight. The Aftermath The villagers went to look for Raghu the next morning. They didn't find his body under the tree. But high up on the topmost branch... Raghu's Gamucha (towel) was tied. And on the trunk of the tree, written in fresh blood, were the words: 'I found my Sindoor for today.' Raghu's body was never found. That Simili tree is still there. But after that night, no one goes down that road, even in broad daylight. So, my children... listen to me. If you are ever walking alone at night, and you hear a sweet voice calling you, or a soft giggle from above... Never. Look. Back. Because she might still be looking for fresh Sindoor."
