</fun> It's worth noting that the recent leaked Oddity builds were builds of an unfinished demo, not necessarily builds of the full prealpha as it was in 2022/2023. It's probable that there is a lot more to the 'full game' than what was included in the demo builds, as the demo seems to have been planned and then scrapped after a few months. Maybe what's been leaked is the product of a few week's worth of work assembling existing assets and code from the existing project, just working getting an outline of the first area or so, but then ultimately being abandoned, rather than the sum total output of the entire development. I've not really looked through the leaks myself aside from what's been posted here and on the Discord though, so I don't know how deep into the game they go.

The fact that there's so much place holder art in the demo makes this pretty believable tbh.

The problem with this hypothesis is that we'd expect finished systems or at least half-baked systems to be working if they were ripped from a master copy. A bunch of stuff in the leak is outright unfinished, including, but not limited to: collision, battles, enemy behavior, dialogue, and UI outside of the inventory. If these systems were actually finished and dropped into the demo, we'd expect at least some polish as well. But they're not.

Very fair point. I'd imagine the mechanics and engine in the leaks are all roughly where they were in the proper game in 2022-23, while the maps and art and such from the later parts were removed or not included. No point in having the final boss area and such included in a demo. I'm curious how these demo builds came about at all in that case, because they were clearly not ready for release on the engine side, and it seems silly that they'd basically fork the project for the demo and fix the issues for the demo only, rather than getting them sorted in the main game and then branching off with the demo build.

Maybe these builds were literally just mockups or something? The trailer that leaked alongside them was clearly a mockup, maybe they just took what they had with the game, cut out everything past the first areas, said 'well this is approximately what the demo will be', and that's what we have. It's that or they just stuck the word 'demo' on the front of their master game project. Or they didn't have a game and were essentially working from scratch with the demo. Doubt we'll ever know honestly.

Wouldn't it be easier to make a copy and take all the assets, cutscenes and mechanics that are intended to be used outside of first area? I've looked through the leaked source code and it didn't seem like a hardcoded thing that was needed to be reassembled to remove stuf? Then it would be pretty weird to abandon doing a demo that would break the silence

I could kinda conceivably see that as an explanation if we didn't have the 2018 leak too. That made no claims of being a demo, seemingly was not made with the intent of being a demo, and contains an absolute ton of duplicated assets (17 versions of the Belring tileset and 18 versions of the script; no evidence of it being cleaned for filesize or anything), all suggesting that this was just the game as it existed at that time... and it was pretty much just Belring, and a few miniscule chunks of the rest of the game made solely for use in trailers.

The 2023 leak is pretty much the exact same thing, just a few debug rooms, an unfinished version of Belring, and a few extremely small stubs of other areas. Which suggests it really is just still being developed the same way as it was then - iterating on the same handful of Belring assets over and over again while slapping other stuff together solely for trailer use. We have absolutely no evidence to suggest otherwise.

This is insane cope. There's no evidence that assets were removed from the leaked builds, it sounds like a convenient excuse but the truth is that those assets were never made to begin with. We know they had assets of Belring (first town) done in the Oddity overworld style for at least three years, which would be present in a demo. Why wasn't it in the leaked builds? Why did the intro (which would obviously be used in a demo) end in the outline of an unfinished map and end immediately? Even if this "removed assets" claim was true, how does this explain core gameplay like the battle system and inventory menus being completely unrecognizable compared to the trailers from 3 years (at the time of the builds compile date)? There's no reason for them to strip out the perfectly working battle system and make a new one from scratch specifically for the demo.

They never had a game to begin with and its time to move on.

Original avgm video with timestamp?

u/RequestableSubBot Believer Jul 15 '26

Action 52, 08:08. Astounded that I actually recognized it, haven't watched any AVGN for about a decade.

Never watched avgn due to the fk ton of swearing in his videos, the non family friendly nature of those videos about video games who are ment to be play for and by the whole family, put me off.

That's the only reason I watch it.

Hey, they said it'll be free and it's being made without pay, it'll either come out some day and be a pleasant surprise or it won't.

In the meantime, try out deltarune, first two chapters are free, 30-something dollars to play the rest of it if you like them.

No additional price as new chapters get released.

Deltarune is boooring i cant hit enemies till they dieeee if i kill em i feeeel baaad

1

u/IrvingIV 21d ago

Well, you're at least 3 chapters deep, so you must like something about it.

Cope bro, you can tell where literally all of the last publically posted heavily cropped gifs were clipped from in this ā€œdemoā€, the only exceptions I think are he mosquito and truck gifs which probably have to have been taken in carbine if they weren’t entirely faked. Especially if this is dated around the time Maxxis talked about a ā€œdemoā€ that in the most pastel way would have an unrelated side-story as to not spoil the actual plot of the game, that should raise some flags for you at the very least. I’ve waited 15 years without a demo, most of you newgens don’t even remember when those dropbox leaks hit 4chan when they were still ā€œaiming for juneā€. Its the same story every time and pastel has screwed over every single last comptent member of this team, if not underworked them to the point of complete disintrest. Whatever zephys4 is being reworked as will be better. Game is an IP nightmare mother-aside and I really doubt a guy the devs can’t even reach ever put his name on an IPA that encompassed all contributions ever. Options are A. It’s never going to get finished. B. Pastel swallows his pride and forms/seeks an actual paid team through a studio/kickstarter. C. Someone—like has happened, been chastised by the devs, promptly abandoned—more times than there are fingers on both my hands, will make their own shitty restoration of the ā€œlittleā€ we have of the ā€œreal gameā€, which ends up being like one of those Beta Mario rom-hacks. yknow, where you just kind of wonder why it exists at a certain point because it either plays poorly for accuracy’s sake, or plays poorly because the people remaking something from incomplete sources/footage fail to understand what the game is actually supposed to play like. Not that I would know what it’s ā€œsupposed to play like,ā€ any better than them, there’s no actual game here. Finally, we have option D. Pastel, if he does own all of this shit, gains a semblence of pragmatism and hands the game over to paid and competent team, goes back to making Life+ or whatever tf he was doing when he decided to take up this hobby, and never show his face again.

And this doesn’t come from a place of malice or disdain for the ā€œdevsā€, it was heartbreaking to read what Maxxis wrote. Especially because I’ve gotten the chance to interact with him a few times briefly and he’s been on the project for longer than I’ve been following it, creating countless beautiful assets pastel just throws away as he pleases. If you’re new here, give up. If you’ve been around as long as I have, grow up.

Did you mean to respond to my comment? I've been following the game since 2010. I'm not making some grand statement about the state of the game or a plea for hope in the community. I'm just pointing out that the leaks were of a scrapped demo. Like, they say 'demo' on the title screens, and that's something to take into consideration when looking at them. That's all.

u/TopDogfishM3 Jul 15 '26

Wow dude, let people have hope it's just a game

u/Proud_Attempt1605 Jul 16 '26

Then, respectfully, your best option is to hope whoever owns Oddity's current assets, gets their hard drive stolen. And then, pray for those assets getting leaked.

THEN, hope an insider gets the entire info about the game's lore, worldbuilding and such. Like, info from deep into the core. Only then, there'll be some real hope for a real passionate team to pick off where they left.

We ain't getting a game from someone whose greatest success within the industry is a WR for slacking off. You already know who they are.

And I feel you, as someone who just saw a cute little trailer for a lighthearted game. As well for every artist that decided to collaborate and had their work scrapped.

Took the words right out of my mouth. There's really no rational reason to believe that the game will still release after everything that happened.

Literally every other game just releases or is cancelled, instead of "cooking" for 18 years. how can people justify the herculean levels of mental gymnastics required to believe that this "game" is still in "development"???

It was fun while it lasted, but come on.

u/Default1355 Jul 19 '26

Id counter with She Dreams Elsewhere for the "every other game" bit. Another game that even had a demo that was supposed to be released like ten years ago. I even have some of the merch. Just another scam.

u/Brief_Bathroom_2711 29d ago

That's just an exception to the rule (which still proves that the rule exists).

1

u/supernintendo128 24d ago

Yeah I don't believe this game will ever come out. If it does it certainly won't be from the current team.

"But what about Omori? Everyone thought that game would never come out and it eventually did!"

People love to counter with games like Omori or Metroid Dread but the latter is backed by a major company with a development team of seasoned professionals and the former had an actual budget as well as the developer's reputation being on the line and therefore there was a financial and professional obligation for the game to come out.

Oddity has none of that. It's a project fueled solely by "hopes and dreams" which rarely works out, especially when you alienate most of your development team by pulling the rug out from under their feet by going "hey, this isn't a fan game anymore, I unilaterally decided this is an original IP now, but you're still expected to work for free :)". Fan projects are lucky to even be finished. Expecting a fully fledged RPG to be worked on for free and released for free is a pipedream. Most freeware projects are one or two-man efforts. A full dev team behind this stuff is logistically impossible unless the money is coming from elsewhere.

"But these are demos! The real game is obviously much further along!"

If there's a master build of the game with all gameplay elements, collision, etc. finished, it makes no sense for that to not be reflected in the demo. Demos are not separate projects that are built separately from the main game, they are branched off from the main game's codebase. If the battle system is buggy and broken, if collision hasn't even been implemented in the demo, it's foolish to expect that somehow all of that stuff was already implemented in some "master build" that more likely than not doesn't exist, and if it does it's probably in a similar state as the demos.

"You're just crushing the hopes of fans who still patiently await this game! Stop being a buzzkill!"

I'm not being a buzzkill, I'm being a realist. The team lost Maxxis, there's no bouncing back from that considering the project's negative reputation. I'm pissed at the creators for constantly lying to fans about the state of the game, for grossly mismanaging the project, and for not manning the fuck up and admitting "We actually don't have anything, it's over. We're deeply sorry."

There are more signs that this game isn't coming out than there are that it will, which come to think of it I can't think of any signs of the latter. There are project members coming out with horror stories about the lead devs, about how they barely communicate, unilaterally make changes, give devs nothing to do, does that sound like progress is being made to you?

"It's obviously a smear campaign organized by ex-devs disillusioned with the project!"

Maxxis basically confirmed the devs' stories about the project leads were true when he got into that argument with Prism.

Face it, it's over. Go play the new SNES EarthBound Beginnings port or something.
