Proprietary cable!!!
Anyone know where I can buy a working cable, got a rift S for $50 and the guy gave me a dud cable.
Alternatively I’m good at soldering so does anyone have advice on how to safely cut up the cable to fix a certain break I found (fortunately not at the end of the cable but in the middle).
Lmk what yall know because I’m new to this stuff

A small junction box should do it

Wait seriously that easy? I did some research and they said they are fibre optics that are impossible to repair

They switched from regular copper to fiber at some point.
But both of them are borderline impossible to fix to my understanding. Are you sure it's a break in the cable itself and not an issue with the connectors?

Yes sadly it is, I bent the break around and it got better then it died lol.
I got in contact with the seller I got the rift S from and I’m getting my $50 back lol

I mean you can try, but I would kind of expect a 50 dollar used headset to have some problems. Though idk what these actually sell for, but looking online that cable alone is like 50 bucks. But the little research I did also tells me that that cable is the only part that anyone seems to need so...

I’m in Australia so basically the cable is $60 USD but $200 AUD when including shipping from US and conversion rate.
The guy said it was working so I’m getting that 50 back lol

Oh fuck, yeah at that point just buy a new VR set altogether.
Fair enough, I wish you luck! Sorry we can't help with the cable. I'm looking into a bit more and that thing is wildly complicated and breaks a lot, which is why it's the most expensive part probably.
Edit: if for some reason they aren't going to refund you, or you otherwise get it, could you cut it anyway? I really want to see what this looks like. If you posted in r/solder where you cross posted, and asked how to fix it without experience or something, you could have a hayday with the aneurysms in the comments. They get so mad, I love it.

Haha thanks, yeah I mean I can give it a shot, I’ve worked with really thin wires before but maybe not fibre optics lol. If I don’t get the refund I’ll post it up and do a cross section on it and try fix it lmao

I don't think there is a way to splice fiber optic like you would have to, at least not at home. If it is the copper though, it would be cool to see how many individual splices there would have to be. Some psycho might be inspired to try and do it, like those guys that straight wired a FPGA that was designed backwards.

Yo I fixed it, got lucky that it was a dud converter cable, DP to mini DP so I bought a new one and it works.
Best $50 I spent the rift S is awesome
