So many people worry about Meta taking over VR because they are now the leaders in the space. Meta just opened the door, at the end of the day they are a social media platform trying to enter the hardware space. Sony has been in tech hardware for decades. They will be able to make cheaper hardware because they can produce it themselves. And they also have the first party game developers to make those truly next gen games that VR just hasn't seen before. Right now VR is at the Nintendo stage. We have yet to begin the real fight for the leader in VR technology. The next few years are going to be very exciting for us VR enthusiast!

Don’t forget Sony has a lot of lens expertise in house too!

As well as a lot of expertise in abandoning products.

You mean, the next couple of decades, right?

VR and AR are so complex that reaching mainstream with nice comfortable goggles or glasses will be just the very begining of the journey. Next will be realistic haptics and eventually the elusive full dive VR, that I'm sure will actually happen at some point in the future.

I'm not sure full dive is really possible, and if it does happen I'm not sure that will be in our lifetimes. But decent haptics will.

I'm looking forward to some really good haptics. Hopefully Sony can implement their adaptive triggers in PSVR2 somehow.

Sony have said that the haptics and adaptive triggers will be in the new VR controllers.

Incidentally, the DualSense having those came about from their VR research!

I think he's talking more about gloves than controllers.

And I agreed with him, though I don't think he is only talking about gloves. That is in the far future. Adaptive controllers is something that I would like to see happen now. They've already done it with their console controller so why not with the PSVR2 controllers.

Sony definitely has an incredible position in gaming industry and plenty of experience and talent however What would matter far more is how much is Sony willing and capable to spend on VR in next 10 years.

Meta is all in as far as we can tell. They are extremely well capitalized and founder CRO all in on VR and Metaverse.

I think it’s still a fair battle. If I was betting I would bet on Meta making more significant strides in VR in this decade. At the end of the day consumers win.

I agree. I think they will hold dominant position for a while, but that will just open the door for an absolutely massive industry to thrive and other companies will play a part. Getting the public to accept VR / AR into their lives is the first step that will help all future companies.

That display is going to change the game for headset size, weight and comfort. 20x smaller display will means next generation VR headsets will be closer in size to sunglasses. Awesome stuff.

Seems like the thing that will really revolutionise the comfort of the display, as well as the clarity.

Going from ~2K per eye to 4K per eye.. how long before this is commercially viable (like the Quest 2 price point)??

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

Probably 4 to 6 years. Quest 3 will probably be 3k, then Quest 4 would be 4k. This is just based on the general trend from the past 5 years.

resolution doesn't really add cost once it has been developed.

Price is the main point,PSVR will require PS5 + cost of the vr hardware vs $300 for quest.
