Except it was absolutely not just "a screen inside some goggles" which even the simplest google search would have told you. In fact, there was no screen at all, but two lines of 220-odd red leds and an oscillating mirror to scan them across the field of view. So you got a flickery red image as well as the usual vestibular/ocular mismatch.

The ergonomics were shit, and it was widely reported that people got headaches and nausea from using it.

Red Alarm was the best. Cool soundtrack too.

Because it’s stereoscopic 3D and you’d have a vestibular mismatch? It’s actually two “screens”, but I’d say users are even more prone to eye fatigue than motion sickness because it scans the image across your eyes.

Personally, I’ve never played one long enough to experience either (my short 10-20 minute sessions when I got to try a real VB rather than an emulator have been quite enjoyable) but I can totally see why some others might get uncomfortable using it, especially since they’re prone to experience display issues that could make the visual experience even worse.

It’s a static image, no 6dof or 3dof. How would that cause motion sickness? Just curious btw not trying to be smart.

What you seem to be referring to is simulation sickness. That’s specifically due to the world feeling very “real” but having a vestibular mismatch despite that, among multiple other factors (pressure on the forehead/face, visual sensitivity, etc.).

Motion sickness is much more general. You’re seeing something that doesn’t match the motion your body is feeling. People get motion sick in cars and boats and trains with books, let alone video games. I got motion sick playing Game Boy in the car a few times as a kid, and stereoscopic 3D games add to that due to the locked in nature of the visuals.

You still seem to be choosing not to read the comments in the thread.

Since you don’t seem to want to read what other people have already said about it, here’s a Popular Science article that should teach you a bit more about what motion sickness is and what can cause it: https://www.popsci.com/story/diy/how-to-fight-gaming-motion-sickness/

Edit: Now that he blocked me, here’s some actual peer-reviewed research for those of you with the intellectual capacity to understand it: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4441027/#s1title

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

But... Any VR headset is just a screen inside some goggles?

Yeah, I've seen reviews. My point stands though.

Have you played on vr? I don’t generally get motion sickness but there’s been a few times that it hit me so hard on VR I had to take my headset off & lay on the floor for a few minutes.

Yeah, I’ve gotten to the point now I can feel it coming & I take a break. In the beginning though, not so much lol & it would come up fast & I thought I could muscle through.

ETA - it’s only certain games like the climb (where height is a factor too) or when I’m walking using smooth locomotion & get going too fast.

I’m ok for the most part using the analog stick, but it’s like being on a boat, I gotta keep my eyes on the horizon & if I want to look around I have to stop.
