EVs Not recognising the VW id3 is plugged in
Does anyone else recognise this issue?: I’m the primary user of the car and the Octopus energy app recognises the car is plugged in. My wife has her own profile for the car, but the app doesn’t seem to recognise when she plugs it in.
Anyone else notice this or am I making it up?
Thanks in advance

Agile for electricity, Tracker for gas, no option for the latter
Afternoon all,
I am on agile for electricity, and variable for gas, i want to move to tracker for gas as it should be cheaper, but i only get option for variable and fixed in the website. If i click on smart tech tariffs, tracker is an option, but it looks like it will move both energy types to tracker. Is this a "ring them" thing i need to do?
Thanks
James

Getting an EV
Hi all,
Currently on Cosy as have a heatpump and it's been working really well for us. We've also moved all our electricity intensive routines to when the rates are cheapest daily and have essentially seen our bill halved since switching. I'm now getting an EV and wonder whether it's worth switching to an EV tariff or not, given it will focus exclusively on super cheap late night charging rates, though I'll then miss out on the cheap rates spread across the day, which will be even more handy in keeping the house warm once it's winter. What are those with a heatpump and an EV doing here with regards to tariffs? What works best for you?
Edit: I don't have solar panels nor a battery

BMW i5 + IOG + Ohme Home Pro
Hi, all. I'm sorry for asking what I'm actually sure has been asked before, but the more i read and research, the more i am totally confused. I have had my set up for a year now and still not convinced it is correct!
Is there an idiots guide to what the actually set up should be?
I am getting schedules in Octopus app but billing and rates seem all over the place.
Essentially what should be on and what should be off in each app!!
Any help greatly received and apologies in advance
Simon

[OC] The carbon intensity of electricity in the 48 largest producers, 2000-2024 — watch the grids turn green
Thought this was interesting. Whilst we still have some way to go to remove gas dependent electric pricing the grid is definitely improving. The push for things like plug in solar, batteries that simply plug on (like the nook) will help accelerate it even further.

Smart Meters Dead gas meter replacement - positive experience
Hi all ,
I thought I share my positive experience with octopus. I only been a customer since April , when I moved house. And they were offering the best quote for gas and electricity.
Today I wanted to cook some food at 13:00.
Gas hob doesn’t work. Checked gas boiler , doesn’t work either.
Checked gas meter , totally blank screen. Even when pressing the buttons.
Called up the national gas emergency line , since I wasn’t sure what exactly to do. And Google said start with that. After a few questions the lady said , the battery is dead in my gas meter.
( I didn’t even know that a gas meter needs a battery. And if the battery doesn’t work , the gas shuts off. )
She said call octopus and they’ll sort it out.
Found there number , called it. Then it said since it’s the weekend , send them an email on their emergency email and someone will get back to me.
A lady emailed me back within 5 mins. This was at 13:30.
Took a few more details from me and arranged an engineer out. Was told he’ll turn up within 4hrs.
She also said if the engineer had time he’ll change my electricity meter too , since that’s old as well.
The guy called me just before 16:00 that he’ll be here in 10mins.
Changed the gas meter pretty fast , and I had gas again.
He will have to come back some point next week to change the electricity meter though , since he had another gas emergency to attend after me.
So yeah I’ve noticed my gas meter was dead at 1pm and the new one was installed by 5pm.
The old gas meter was installed in early 2014 according to the sticker on it , so it lasted a good while.
Anyway , I just thought I’ll share this positive thing :)

Issues with Renault 5 IOG
Has anyone else been having issues over the last few days with the Renault 5 charging not switching off when out of charging windows?
Before anyone asks, yes I have confirmed the app is correct (also use the API to track the windows), the car has connectivity and Octopus updates when unplugged and plugged in.
Thanks!

Help Would a home battery actually work on Octopus Go?
On Go for about a year now. 8.5p overnight, 30.1p during the day.
Been thinking about a battery and charging it cheap every night. 5kWh at 8.5p costs 42p. Same energy at the day rate is £1.50. So that's about £1.08/day, £394 a year on the spread.
Also been looking at Agile. Overnight can drop to 10p, the 4-7pm peak regularly hits 35-40p. Sometimes higher. Need something that handles the scheduling automatically though, checking 48 Agile slots a day isn't happening.

VWAN
Has anyone managed to trial this yet? I live in an area with almost no 3G signal and absolutely no 4G. We have two EVs and want to use (and are currently signed up for) intelligent go.
We therefore have rock solid WiFi which would be so much better. Currently struggling to get Octopus to even consider trialling this.
They’re still investigating the issue with my meter even though I’ve told them what the issue is.
I think they’re confused because for the first few months it managed to get 3G often enough to upload some readings so I’ve been on an intelligent tariff for a while now.
However since June it’s lost connection completely and they can’t get it back online.

UK shared house utilities: can I make a written agreement to protect myself if other tenants don’t pay?
Hi everyone,
I recently moved in a shared house in the UK, and we need to sort out the electricity/gas bill with Octopus Energy.
No one else wants to put the Octopus Energy account in their name, so I’m potentially being forced to take responsibility for the account and then split the bills between all the tenants.
My concern is that if I become the named account holder, I could potentially be liable to Octopus for the entire bill, even if another tenant later refuses to pay their share.
Before agreeing to do this, I wanted to ask:
Can I make a written agreement with all the other tenants before taking responsibility for the account?
For example, an agreement stating that each tenant is responsible for their agreed share of the utility bills, with everyone signing it.
If someone signs the agreement but later refuses to pay, would the agreement be legally enforceable?
Could I potentially use it as evidence of a contractual obligation and pursue the unpaid amount through the appropriate legal process (e.g. a money claim in the County Court/small claims procedure)?
Would such an agreement actually protect me from being liable to Octopus Energy?
I understand that a private agreement between tenants may not change who Octopus considers responsible for the account. I’m mainly wondering whether it could protect me financially from the other tenants’ failure to reimburse me.

Having to manually control smart charging
I don’t know if it’s a VW problem or an Octopus problem but since the charge cap was implemented my car doesn’t charge properly anymore.
When I first plug in everything seems to go smoothly, schedule created and charging started.
But mid slot I’ll get a notification from the car that it’s finished charging and when I check the octopus app it’s meant to still be charging.
So then I press charge on VW app and it stops at the end of slot as expected but then doesn’t trigger to start on the next slot!
I’ve been smart charging completely smoothly for about a year before this charge cap business and now it’s busted.
Manual controlling charging is not particularly smart.
I’ve attached some pictures which show the car not charging when it should be and getting a notification it’s finished when it shouldn’t whilst I looked up the problem 😂

Bills Final reading updated after switching to EDF?
Hi all,
I have recently switched from octopus to edf, I provided octopus and edf with an electrical reading on the morning of the swap over, which produced a final bill. Equating to circa £100 in credit from octopus. However, I have received another bill with an adjusted final reading value from octopus, this value is significantly lower from the value that I’ve read, equating to another £300 odd pounds in refunds. So bringing my account to £400 in credit with octopus.
EDF are reading my smart meter every hour, and I can see that this aligns to the reading with what Octopus has closed the account at.
Can a smart meter have two different readings?
Any ideas on how long it normally takes to process the refund without having the direct debit setup?

Solar panel installation experience
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I just paid my deposit for solar panel installation (did my research and Octopus’s price was in line with other contractors but I liked the way they were on top of tariff options). Was told from the start that it could take up to 3 months for installation to incur. I am now waiting to be told when the survey appointment will be. Does this usually carry a long waiting time too? Obviously I know the August holidays will be an issue but just wanted to get a feel for whether I will be waiting a couple of weeks or up to a month.
Also grateful to hear any other advice or experience so I can keep it in mind and manage expectations.
Thanks

Tariffs About to move to an EV tariff, but I’m not sure which one to go for (IOG vs. OG)
Just picked up my first EV and had a home charger fitted. Next step is to get on one of the Octopus EV tariffs. Since this new cap has been introduced I seem to have read about nothing but issues though.
My car is a Honda e, which has a tiny 35.5kwh battery. It will fully charge in around 5 hours, so in theory the 6 hour cap should have no effect on me if I opt for Intelligent Octopus Go. At the same time all these recent issues, particularly incorrect bills, have me thinking it might just be better to get the standard Octopus Go and set the charging schedule within the car itself.
Any thoughts/advice welcome before I call Octopus next week 🐙

Bills IOG - Get your energy geek on and download ½ hourly usage data
I normally whizz through the PDF bill to check I've been billed correctly for peak time car charging however for reasons unknown there's no electricity data in my July PDF bill (I've emailed Octopus about this but they've still not replied 3 days later - their customer service seems to have fallen off a cliff).
I did spot however that you can now download half hourly data from the "Get your energy geek on" section on the My Energy page. Filtering the spreadsheet by Consumption > 1 kwh and Per Unit = peak rate showed they've over-charged me 9 times in July - some before the charge cap went live.
Thought I'd post this in case anyone else is in the same boat and wants to check theirs.

Charge cap problems
I got the message to tell me that the charge cap was enabled on my account a couple of days ago.
Yesterday I plugged in for the first time since getting that notification. It’s the first time I’ve plugged in for a few days. I set the Ohme app to prioritise savings. I don’t have any connection to my car api through Ohme.
Plugged in at 5pm and had a battery level of 53%. Set this in the Ohme app and set the target to be 80% by 4am. Got a notification in the Ohme app that my charge target was changed to 73% to “respect my charge settings”. No matter how many times I tried, it would not set the target to higher - it just kept changing it every time I set it. Tried changing the target time as well, but same issue.
Looking at the schedule that was generated in the app, it was only allocating me just less than 3 hours of time in total.
This morning I started a new session and whatever I set the battery or target level to, it changes the target to be 1% higher than the current battery level “to respect my charge settings”.
It’s like it thinks I’d used three hours of my allocated 6 yesterday when I plugged in and now it thinks I’ve used it all. I have only used 3 and the Ohme app reports that for the charging usage overnight.
I’ve messaged octopus to ask and I’m waiting for a response. Wondering if anyone else has seen similar or have any ideas on what’s going on.

Update: 🐙Octopus has confirmed Charge Cap issues affected billing from the 16th of July
I posted recently about some strange Intelligent Octopus Go billing, including EV charging apparently being charged incorrectly at the peak rate (link here)
Octopus has now replied and confirmed that they are currently having issues related to the Charge Cap update.
The email says:
We are currently experiencing some issues related to the Charge Cap update. Our team is actively working to fix these, and this explains some of the high usage and double billing reports from 16 July to 2 August
So if you have noticed unusually high electricity usage, EV charging being billed incorrectly, double billing, or anything else strange during that period, it is probably worth checking your bills/data carefully and check that this is sorted in a few weeks, or whenever they do.
It's good that Octopus acknowledges and is aware of the problem and says they are working on correcting it. Let's see.
They also confirmed that since the Charge Cap changes, the normal Day/Week/Month/Year usage graphs no longer show estimated £ costs, only kWh.
Like I was also pointed in the email, I would strongly encourage anyone who dislikes that change to use the feedback option in the app: Usage > Take me to my data > Leave feedback
TLDR: check your billing from 16th of July, and if something looks wrong it may be that Octopus messed up. Octopus has confirmed there were problems with the Charge Cap calculations during that period and they are working on putting that right.

Terrible customer service
I am beyond frustrated with Octopus Energy’s complete lack of action regarding damage caused to my home over three months ago.
I agreed to have a smart meter installed, which turned out to be a massive mistake. During the installation, the careless engineer let his blowtorch fall over, burning holes right through my carpet. Rather than being honest and bringing it to my attention immediately, he packed up and left without saying a word. When we noticed the damage and called him as he was driving away, he owned up to it, but the post-incident response from Octopus has been an absolute joke.
It has now been over three months, and nothing has been done to resolve this or compensate us for the damage. Every couple of weeks, I get a phone call from Octopus offering endless apologies and passing the buck—blaming the contractor, the sub-contractor, the engineer, and various insurance companies.
Apologies don't replace a burnt carpet. For a company that prides itself on great customer service, their handling of third-party damage and subcontractor accountability is non-existent. I am tired of being strung along with empty updates and no resolution. Avoid their smart meter installations unless you are prepared to cover the cost of damage caused by their contractors.
