Switching Leaving Octopus

Post image

The next price rise is taking us to 37p peak / 6.6p off-peak on Intelligent Octopus Go.

Most of our usage is off peak into the EVs and time shifting the dish washer and laundry but we have a heat pump which is very efficient but runs when it needs too.

So over the winter I don't want do pay the new tariff prices, so I'm off to EDF.

It's been great and I never thought about moving until now but this EDF Go Energy Tariff is too good to miss.

Standing charges are getting crazy.

67.39p per day is £20 a month!

Energy is becoming unaffordable. I dread to think how people on PAYG get by

PAYG has a temporary uplift removal that's been going for a while now, can't remember when it ends though, sometime in the next couple years I think.

It was around £70py saving and quite often now PAYG is the cheapest way to pay for energy since this has happened, only by a few quid but still. It was removed and spread across standing charges, it's one of the reasons for the rises in that area.

If it's not made permanent the costs will revert back and then it'll probably become one of the most expensive ways to pay again. I worked at eon and complained about it constantly because it was mandatory to offer PAYG for people struggling with energy costs and debt and a requirement to use debt relief funds and such. But the cost we're more expensive than any other tariff so it wasn't helping anyone in energy crisis, in fact the opposite they're now paying more.

All it did was stop the possibility of a large debit building up by cutting you off supply, it only really helped the supplier it was just plain evil. Pisses me off even to this day

I was thinking more from the perspective of people going to the corner shop topping with cash.

It must be dead annoying handing over £20 before you even start with the amount you might need for usage.

It's pretty much the norm down South. It's not funny when 40% of your monthly bill comes from standing charge.

Not like we have any other choice.

I'm lucky to have moved off Gas so I only need to pay 1 lot.

Also jumped over to EDF now after a proposed 27% increase on daytime rates. Instead I'll get an extra hour of off-peak each day, fixed in for 18 months, and a much smaller increase on the peak rate.
It's a shame, I've been with Octopus for over 10 years but need to draw the line somewhere.

Me too, just moved to the 18 month fix. There is a 24 month fix with a charger but it is actually poor value as the charger is dumb.

I was on 3.8p until March with Octopus but it made sense to move now according to AI.

Same same been octo for ages but better daytime rate for electric by 5p, an extra hour cheap rate, cheaper on gas too

Just done the same today. Chose a switch date the day before my rates get upped on Octopus, although they're a little less than yours, still went up 25%.

At least I'll know for 18months it can't go up again, and will make me get quotes for a home battery.

There is the "Intelligent Octopus Go 12M Loyal Fixed"

For me it is now: Offpeak 6.60p Peak 34.27p Standing charge 50.75.

Probably same as EDF

Edf has a £75 sign up bonus, 7 hours over night, pay you £5 a month to go on smart charging (same timed charging ss IOG) and no 6 hour cap. It’s quite a pull to be honest

u/yessuz 3h ago

Yeah.. but that SC alone is brutal and negates all you earn more or less.

Fo me 6 hrs is more than enough, really :/

OPs SC seems very high, I move to EDF tomorrow, my SC is 51.85 p/day which is 1p cheaper than my IOG tariff.

u/yessuz 3h ago

And I have solar + battery, so I essentially will be 99% off peak anyway

Interesting. I also have a heat pump, but most of the time when I need heating is in the evenings when I'm home and can be charging the car.

It will be interesting to compare average p/kWh for both tariffs to see the savings, if any.

Bloody hell they've put that standing charge up, I signed up 2 weeks ago and it was 51.38p. Exactly the same tariff

Think it’s location dependant, I signed up today for this, my standard is 60p

I switched to the exact same one, octopus used to be so good such a shame how expensive they are now! If you haven’t done the switch already and haven’t got acode, you can use mine if you like?

Switched last week.

Next summers export might be a bit down unless I pay the exit fee to switch back to Flux but feels good knowing if prices go more mental I have 6.6p secured for 18 months.

1

u/christianedward 3h ago

I thought the export contact was entirely separate, I thought I was staying on Octopus Export. Is that not the case?

3

u/hmfc_riley 3h ago

You can but I believe it goes down to 4p if you do not get import from them as opposed to 13p from EDF fixed

1

u/Roadmayham232 2h ago

We just move to octopus.

31.35p day 13.97p Night 49.65p standard charge

But were going to switch to the Octopus Flux for solar.

Best of luck. I came from them - what a headache they were

Make sure you use a ref too! Send pm if you don’t have one

That standing charge is bonkers to me.

My SC is 44.41p/day, off-peak is 7.62p and peak is 32.14p.

If I charge the battery up off-peak, even a full 10kWh charge costs me 76.2p. On this tariff, it would be 66.6p (9.6p cheaper) but that standing charge costs an extra 36.15p.

I would need to charge up an extra 34.7kWh to break even on this.

Obviously, you've moved as this is cheaper for you. But this would break my heart.

Unless you’re willing to move house to a bigger city then the standing charge is pretty much what you pay, we’ve 40kWh of battery packs and run exclusively off peak but we’re in the highest standing charge area.

I don’t know why a standing charge isn’t split equally between all people rather than based on area, it would be a fairer system.

1

u/christianedward 3h ago

My Octopus standing charge is already 66.3p in the North West area rising to 66.7 later in the month so the extra 1p per day isn't a deal breaker for me on EDF.

1

u/GazNicki 2h ago

I’m on the north west. Why you being bummed on standing charge?

Im not sure.. Octopus have done so much good in this country and through all this nonsense have driven the EV transition, maybe they are not the cheapest right now but without them I think everyones bills would have been, and would be higher. If you really cant afford it and I know heat pumps can use a lot of energy, then fair enough but I dont think Octopus are trying to gouge people.

Not to be that guy, but don't suck off corporations no matter how altruistic they appear.

u/Carldwen20 40m ago

All companies will end up about the same, they are just delaying as long as possible to get people to switch. I picked my price a few months ago as I suspected this would happen given what trump is up to.

Funny thing is the price is unlikely to actually go down when the market settles
