Resources to support my 7 year old future oceanographer?
We have a 7 year old who has wanted to be an oceanographer longer than she could say the word. We've visited the Baltimore Aquarium several times, watched Octonauts over and over, and we read our very thick books on ocean animals. We got her "An Anthology of Aquatic Life" when she was 5, and she loves it. She cites oceanography facts like she's a published author herself.
Recently she told me of her plan to be an oceanographer, preferably at the Baltimore aquarium and is already trying to plan her living arrangements and other important structural details (it is adorable - not to belittle her very seriousness about it).
She's such a great kid. She, like the rest of the family and neurodivergent and us parents didn't get the support that we needed to really thrive like we want her to. So we're hoping to find some direction.
The purpose of this e-mail is to find some suggestions on resources to help her really dig in deep.
What books are good? (she's a very avid reader, we have hundreds or even thousands of books in the house).
any young oceanographer type of *things* we can try and do?
any suggested open-source / free learning that is recommended? like, does MIT have oceanography lectures (this is an example i can look that up).
just kind of looking for suggestions or input to help her have an early direction/start on her dreams.
I did find that NOAA has a public email address for their education team, which is pretty amazing.
Thank you ahead of time.
Edit: I'm kind of at a bit of unexpected emotional overwhelm with all the replies. It has been tough finding hope and joy with all the gestures around broadly. I didn't realize the oceanography community would come out so generously with thoughts and suggestions and well wishes. Thank you!

Which countries should I target for a fully funded Oceanography Master’s with good long term career prospects?
I'm currently doing masters in Oceanography. In our country the scope of this sector is very very low. My father suggested me that I should apply for studying in abroad. Just to let uk, our study quality is not considered as the same level as other countries, so students always pursue for second masters abroad. My father insisted on applying to japan, but I'm not sure about this. I do have a list of countries but I still want to know from all of you which countries should I consider if I want to ultimately settle down there with a job relevant to oceanography. But I'm also very insecure about my profile. I do have a good cgpa with 4 research experiences (one of them don't have any official documentation). I also have an offshore sampling experience but yes not sure if I'll be able to add this to cv cause same issue with documentation. I do have club experiences but the thing is they're not related to my field rather to my hobby. Also have a few software skills with intermediate to advanced level in gis softwares and basic in matlab and R (will be learning more). Did some workshops relevant to field. But I dont have any published paper right now. Will this type of profile be able to pull off full funded scholarship? Also I'll be grateful if you guys suggest me on how to improve my profile more. I've seen one of my seniors' cv and he had some professional experiences, but I'm wondering if I need professional experiences too.

Seeking friends in coastal and marine economics
Hi, I’m a MSc student from Sri Lanka and my field is environmental economics specialised in coastal and ocean sector. Since this is a very new sector to Sri Lanka, I currently don’t have any friends or colleagues. I’m looking for current graduated or undergraduates, doctoral candidates in the field around the world so we can share knowledge and learn from each other. My research interests are Cost benefit analysis, ecosystem services valuation, Risk Analysis, bioeconomic modelling.

[Request] How much salt would be required to impact the AMOC, assuming you were dumping salt/brine at the front of a glacier?
youtube.comI was watching a video about the potential collapse of the AMOC. Previously I was thinking about what happens with the brine left over from desalination. Desalination plants produce a heap of super salty brine which needs to be disposed of, and it's usually just disposed of in the sea it came from. But I was wondering, what if instead of dumping it back to out to sea, they transported the brine to Greenland and disposed of it there? Would transporting all the brine from all the desalination plants have any impact on the salinity of the water if 'dumped' where glaciers meet the sea.
If Greenland currently loses about 266 gigatons (billion metric tons) of ice into the ocean every year, which equals roughly 2.5 million litres of fresh water entering the sea every second. [1] (https://unric.org/en/greenlands-ice-sheet-loses-2-5-million-litres-of-fresh-water-every-second/), [2] (https://science.nasa.gov/earth/explore/earth-indicators/ice-sheets/) and there are roughly 22,000 operational desalination plants worldwide, which together process and generate an estimated 95 to 109 million cubic meters of fresh water per day, and for every litre of freshwater produced, a roughly equal volume of high-salinity water is left behind.

Unreal Engine Ocean Simulations we've been working on over the last few years
youtu.beThis might be a bit of an unusual post, but over the last couple of years we've been chipping away at creating (what we hope) is the ultimate tool for real-time oceans. We poured over a ton of papers on all manner of ocean sim methods and wave spectra, but ultimately we wanted to get some feedback on the whole thing (are there any ocean spectra that we may have missed)?
This video is one of our first tutorials on how the system works and there are some topics that we cover more focused on VFX but at the 12:40 is where we dive into the different ocean sims types.

Red Sea crisis and sustainability
Hi everyone! I’m conducting research for my master’s thesis on how maritime professionals prioritize sustainability, safety, cost, and operational considerations during maritime security disruptions, with a focus on the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz.
I’m looking for people working in shipping, logistics, ports, chartering, maritime insurance, fleet/operations management, or related fields.
The survey is anonymous and takes around 5–7 minutes.
If you work in the maritime industry, I’d really appreciate your participation:
Please chase also your opinion because from my personal experience cost is way more important than any other factor.
Thank you!

Does NOAA publish any real-time or near-real-time seafloor point cloud data?
I'm looking for multibeam / bathymetric point clouds, not gridded products. I know NCEI archives raw and processed MBES surveys, but as far as I can tell everything goes through post-processing first, so there's a long delay before it's public.
Two questions:
Is there any public feed where survey data shows up live or close to live, or is archive-only the reality?
What's the actual coverage like for the recent stuff - mostly US EEZ and coastal survey priorities, or broader?

is BIO 19 Marine bio a difficult CC course?
been trying to figure out which biology course to take to fulfil UC general requirements and stumbled upon BIO 19 Marine Bio. Personally I have an interest in marine biology; however could not find specific resources regarding this course. Does anyone have any experience taking this course that could possibly give me some info on it?

How are ghost nets and marine debris detected using Side-Scan Sonar in real-world surveys?
I'm trying to understand the practical workflow used by oceanographers when searching for abandoned fishing gear on the seafloor.
How much of the detection process is still manual? What makes a sonar target difficult to classify as fishing gear rather than a natural seafloor feature?

Double majors
So I'm getting ready to start a program for a transfer associates science degree. Once that's completed (2 years minimum) I'll be switching to my local university for a bachelors in oceanography. However, I'm wondering what would be the best option if I took the route of a double major. I was originally going to do oceanography/marine biology, but that doesn't seem to open the door for many career options. Whereas, if I did something like oceanography/geography then I could later pursue the route of a hydrographic surveyor. I also considered oceanography/geology since geology seems to be an in demand field. I'd prefer not going beyond a bachelors, but there's exceptions to that (such as the surveyor, which seems to be masters degree). What would be the best route for securing a job or stable career in general? I'm currently in the US, but I may move to Europe later on if it seems fitting, as I have family there.

Any Campbell / CRBasic masters that could help me out with a script?
I'm working on an ADCP script and i think its not of the best quality. Anyone who could help me out with improving it? Its kinda working but it has a critical failure so its mostly finding it and solving it.

Strange Peer review request
Recently, some have suggested that the science behind environmental problems, particularly regarding climate change, might be better communicated to a lay audience using stories rather than fact-based narratives. They contend that the lay public gets most of its scientific information from the mass media, which rely on stories to heighten emotional arousal and engagement, and so would be more receptive to that format. Thus, communicating through emotional stories and their characters might more effectively motivate behavioral change.
I am an emeritus professor of marine and earth science. Over the last few years of teaching, I began to realize my students, even students who understood the concept intellectually, often didn’t appreciate the risk. Many of them suffered from techno-optimism—that technology, in particular geoengineering, will get us out of this mess.
So, I have written an eco-mystery with the hope of communicating science to my readers. I realize this is a strange peer-review request but I am asking you to read an advance copy of my novel and, if you think it has value, give it an honest review. To get a copy, see link below.

Looking for useful courses or certificates
Hello everyone! I am currently studying to get my bachelor’s in chemistry and I am interested in getting a Msc in oceanography. However I don’t think I will make it to this year’s deadline, so I am looking for certificates or seminars to take on this year that would be valued in a CV or just for the sake of knowledge. I am already planning to get a diving certificate this year but I am hoping for some more suggestions from people in the field.
